THIS JUST IN: AXL STILL LOVES CHIMAIRA

Friday, November 6th, 2009 at 4:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

Last night Vince and I hit up the Trivium/Chimaira/Whitechapel/Dirge Within show at Irving Plaza here in NYC. I will never ever get sick of watching Chimaira live. They have a forty-five minute set on this tour, and they really make the most of it by basically segueing directly from one song to the next with a minimum of on-stage banter, presumably in order to allow a maximum of brutality. To top it off, the set-list was pretty much perfect – they played at least one or two songs from each of their albums (This Present Darkness excluded), and not always they song(s) you’d expect, either. Definitely go check ‘em out!

Here they are doing “Severed” at the Download Festival in 2007. They played this song last night and the pit just went insane – I think this has to be the heaviest track on Pass Out of Existence, no?

    Circle pit FTW!!!
And yes, Severed is severely br00tal!

  2. BTK666 says:

Indeed. Gotta dig the intro when they do it live!

  3. metalanus says:

    they never disappoint.

  4. DemonicLemming says:

Their older stuff kicks fucking ass….I’d definitely be up for a Pass Out of Existence/The Impossibility of Reason concert.

  5. thedynasty says:

I can’t wait to see “Secrets Of The Dead” played live in front of my very eyes

  6. More Metal Than You says:

Wow, wicked live footage. If this is what these guys sound like in concert, I gotta see me some Chimaira. Never been a huge fan, but I always liked that “Pure Hatred” track.

    • SonOF says:

They are amazing live, I actually thought that clip did them no justice whatsoever…They sound much tighter than that live. Anyone that has not seen Chimaira live should do so ASAP.

  7. Ryd1ZZ says:

Will be seeing this tour in LA at the end of the month. They are actually combining this tour and the hatebreed tour into one awesome day/night so it’s gonna be badass.

  8. Motoghost says:

I haven’t seen these guys in so long. Unlike the person above me, I refuse to go to that show where their combining the Hatebreed tour into a huge festival. It was already bad enough knowing their on tour with Trivium and Whitechapel, but then to have to suffer through Hatebreed, Unearth, and Born of Osiris on top of it. I’m going to the Vader tour instead, I’ll wait till Chimaira headlines or does support on a decent bill.

  9. Does anybody have the setlist for Chimaira on their Trivium tour? More specifically, did they play ‘The Flame’?

    • joshkid says:

they didnt play the flame. they played:
The Venom Inside, Resurrection, Severed, The Disappearing Sun, Pure Hatred, Power Trip, Empire (EM PAI URRRR!!!), etc.

  10. Mike Arose says:

Good band don’t get all the hype about em though. Gojira is more my taste but “Frozen In Time” is a sick cut off their new album

  11. Bob says:

    Terrible band. That’s all…just terrible.

  12. SonOF says:

I just listened to “Pass out of Existence” the other day, and was shocked by how basic it seemed compared to the last few albums. They were straddling the nu-metal fence at times with that record, but thankfully Chimaira completely went the other way in the metal direction. I think the band has evolved nicely and improved with each release.

  13. Anthony says:

Picking up my ticket for the Toronto show tomorrow. Support slot, but it’s been 2 years since i’ve seen ‘em. Can’t wait to catch the Infection stuff live.

  14. TonyT says:

Am I the only one that thinks The Infection is pretty much shit? Especially compared to their previous albums (Impossibility of Reason thru Resurrection), it just feels like there is something missing. The fire doesn’t seem to be there anymore… Anyone else?

    • nickweiser says:

i agree. its not a good album really. it just drags on and on. I love the self titled album, even dig Resurrection. But the new one did nothing for m.e But im still willin to see wat they got live.

  15. SokeSleezy says:

  16. Kelly says:

I saw them headline back in July and they blew my mind. I can’t wait to catch them again.

  17. Fritz! says:

Nice! There’s one thing that bothers me about Mark Hunters performance though. He always has that “on the job”-feel about him. I’m all for being pro, but there’s seems to be no feelings involved what so ever? Saw them in Oslo a few months back, and it was all the same, Hunter “On the job”, and this was up close in a relatively small venue.

    • Fritz! says:

I dont know, maybe its just me?

      • Superhans says:

definitely on this performance (i was there woop woop), i noticed at the time he seemed pissed off… and not in a fired up rob flynn way either!!
maybe its too many shows…. maybe its fuck all!
        Chimaira rule

  18. Tuhdeh says:

K i think you guys actually made me like Chimaira now…

  19. Dave says:

ewww. Boring, bland, generic cliche metal at best. Just about all the obvious troo-metal stereotypes are present in that youtube clip. Sorry Metalsucks, if this is the kind of music you’re pumping up then you have no place giving shit of any kind to Metallica……who would blow these guys clean off the stage (not that many fans would be watching Chimaira’s set to see it).

    • Slaughterhouse says:

Song was out on Pass out of Existance which was in 2001…listen to Impossiblity of Reason and on…they are fucking killer and they don’t try to follow all the cookie cutter metal out there…they just do what they do

  20. blah says:

went to worcester show last night. truly made every other band on the band look completely fucking silly. FUCK TRIVIUM.

  21. Brian \m/(-_-)\m/ says:

hahhhhhhh that show was siiiiick. and it was cool i finally met axl and vince, i can now die in peace. also mark hunter was just chillin at the bar like a normal person, so that was cool. oh and also CHIMAIRA AND TRIVIUM FUCKING RIPPED IT UP!!!!

  22. master shake says:

i dont get the love for this band. very generic metal imo

  23. Fong Chung says:

They are an unoriginal generic band. I will never understand how they got big.

  24. Sandwiches says:

Whoop dee doo. *agrees with all generic/overrated comments*
