I’VE GOT A BRAND NEW PAIR OF ROCKET SKATES, YOU’VE GOT A BRAND NEW CHI

Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 2:30pm by Vince Neilstein

Altitude TV [via Blabbermouth] has posted some footage of Deftones performing a new song called “Rocket Skates” at the MetalSucks co-sponsored Smokeout Festival a couple of weekends back. It’s pretty fuckin’ heavy and, not surprisingly, it’s a step forward for a band that’s always sought to push musical boundaries (though it still sounds distinctly Deftones). I mean it’s not as if the Deftones have suddenly gone prog, but… you get the point… as far as Deftones songs go, this one doesn’t sound like the band is trying to re-live or re-create the past so much as take the next step.

For those wondering, I believe that’s Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega stepping in for the still-ailing Chi Cheng. And hey doesn’t Chino look like he’s in awesome shape? For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, Deftones have shelved their completed but unreleased album Eros and are said to be working on something else. It’s never easy for those guys to release a record, is it?

The audio sounds like complete shit; it’s difficult to judge the new song, though it does sound like a logical step from the last album. I love “Adrenaline”, “Around The Fur”, and “White Pony”, as for the self-titled and SNW, not sold on the newer, more progressive sound. Hopefully the new album will be good.

  2. Facebook User says:

    Man. They sound terrible.

  3. Dave says:

Absolutely atrocious vocal delivery. Aside from that the song sounds alright I guess………even though the nu-metal window of opportunity slammed shut on these guys years ago.

    • groverXIII says:

That’s nothing new to the Deftones. Chino Moreno has always been a terrible vocalist as far as I’m concerned.

    • stu1 says:

These guys really shed the “nu metal” thing about 10 years ago.

      • Martin says:

fuck that. Deftones have FAR excelled the nu metal genre. The last album that I consider to be nu metal sounding from them is Around the Fur. Their just a great band who have really learned how to make great music. Even when they were “nu metal”, they were still awesome. Fuck that, its’ just good music.

    Oh English pride….

I wish they’d just release the damn album already.

  6. Brrrrrrt says:

    Wooooooow !

I wish I was there … in the audience jumping to this awesome song !

Abe is a (fat) God !

  7. More Metal Than You says:

Doesn’t sound that different from all of their other songs. I don’t mind Deftones, but to call this a logical step from anything is total horseshit. Deftones gave a good buffer for showing up late, getting drunk and ready to go the moshpit for Slipknot, I’ll give them that much.

  8. chino dropped some serious weight. dude was getting up there

    • FuckGiggaBlows says:

Yea dude, much needed. Near the end of the self titled touring cycle he was huge. Looks like he took some tips from Frank Delgado who got real skinny a few years back.

  9. Lady Goo says:

This band should stop trying to act like their metal. Stick to the punk…

  10. Ben says:

Chino’s never been a very good live vocalist.

  11. Nick says:

Deftones were awesome the few times I saw them in the mid 90s, but they seem to suck now. I saw them also a bit later open for Black Sabbath in which Sergio Vega played bass, and they kinda sucked.

  12. blah says:

hows that rock youve been living under? of course its sergio vega, hes only been playing live with them for like a fucking year. eros was shelved due to the situation with chi, and they already finished another new album with sergio. god forbid you actually do some research before posting.

    Who is this again?

    Emmure?

  15. cosk! says:

the band sounds good, chino sounds shitty, but ive always looked at his vocals as something that is just studio produced. not gonna lie though, ill get the album when it comes out, and enjoy it most likely.

  16. DustintheWind says:

I am really surprised by all the Deftones hating on this site… They are obviously much deeper and more progressive musically than any “Nu-metal” bullshit.. I can see Chino’s voice maybe rubbing some people the wrong way but overall they are an amazing band, and anyone who was old enough to appreciate Around the Fur and White Pony when they were released knows how original and trend setting the Deftones are…

    • IAmTheClitCommander says:

Agreed. The Deftones were a BIG DEAL back in the day, and they’re one of the few bands from that time that still put out bad ass music. But I have to say that I like Chino’s vocals. They’re perfect for The Deftones.

  17. You Don't Know Me says:

It was a bit meh for me. Some cool parts. Some not so great parts. I’d have to hear more of the album to judge.

  18. NoCowNoFood says:

I can see whats commin once that new record from The Deftones comes out yull see all the haters saying Ohhhhhhhh its such a good record this and that..

  19. Gabriel says:

Cool! They were here in Brazil 5 days ago, and Rocket Skates was the first song. Great concert!

  20. will says:

if you hate this band i wish death on you

  21. will says:

the band is one of our generations best and chino’s vocals are unmatched. fuck the haters. they busy themselves on someone else dick
