THE KATATONIA VIDEO PUTS ME AT EASE

Here’s a great example of an excellent music video that was clearly made on a budget. Take a goth chick, go out to the middle of the woods, and film some shit in a style that is both a) intriguing and b) appropriate to the music, and what do you get? An excellent promotional tool that’s enjoyable to watch. Good for Katatonia.

Bonus: this video makes the tension in my shoulders dissolve. Not entirely sure why.

The song, “Day and then the Shade,” comes off of Katatonia’s latest, Night is the New Day, which is out now on Peaceville.

    I’ve never been a fan of this band but lately I’m starting to dig them… I mean, this song is awesome… what I dislike is the depressive atmosphere they put in their music, even if I know that’s the reason why the music is so good… ok it doesn’t make any sense…

      Depressing or not, they’re a great band to put on and fall asleep to. And I don’t mean fall asleep in a “they’re totally boring sense”, but their music is just so relaxing. Even their “heavier” tracks like Ghost of the Sun or Leaders aren’t distracting from letting you relax and dose off. I listened to Night is the New Day on the way to school the other day, and I dosed off like a fucking baby. It was awesome.

    The cinematography is great, but the editing is terrible. Too MTV. No shot is held longer than 6 seconds. No wonder the kids these days all have ADD.

    Album of the year. I cannot say enough good things about it – it’s a work of genius.

    But crap uninspired video that has doesn’t do the music justice in any way and doesn’t represent Katatonia whatsoever. The director should have saved that kind of faux goth tripe for Cradle Of Filth.

    I didn’t like the video, it seemed so stereotypical and the shaky camera and switching scenes things extremely fast got a bit annoying. I never got through to finishing it, but Katatonia’s album is still very awesome and I agree that they are very depressing and their music is great for sleep or just calm moments.

    I find criticism of music videos to be silly in general, especially comments on “originality.” There are few that can be really called original cause most are mainly of a band perfomring and looking “badass.” Overdone yes, but completely understandable cause who wouldnt want a profesional video of themselves rocking out and looking badass?

    For this reason I think this video is very bold cause no one from the band is in it. Does this video flirt with ideas already done? Yeah sure, A Perfect Circle comes to mind, but fuck it cause who really cares. Its effective enough to catch the mood of what is much more important . . . THE SONG.

    and also I have a soft spot for goth chicks so sue me.

    love this band, the music blends so well with the lyrics and that melancholic melody always gives it
    a great mood.
    Video is Ok, could be better but this band is all about the music and nothing else.
