I STILL LIKE HIM

I somehow completely missed that there’s a new HIM album coming out next year; I mean, we were due, so I’m not surprised, I just never heard about it ’til just now. It’s called Screamworks: Love In Theory and Practice, which is long and silly and spooky and “deep,” y’know, in case you didn’t know they were goth.

Of course, that does negate the fact that it may very well be good, as many HIM albums are quite good. That shit is catchy as hell, and besides, Howard Jones likes it, and Howard Jones is much, much bigger than you are.

Metal Hammer already have a track-by-track guide to the album. It sounds like it’s gonna be a HIM album – either that makes you happy or it doesn’t.

Here’s one good reason I like HIM, and I don’t even care if you make fun of me, ’cause the solo makes me air guitar every time I hear it:

And this, my friends, might be the only example of a metal cover of a pop song that I’ve ever actually liked:

HIM suck worse than 90% of the bands you’re always taking the piss out of on this site.

  2. caparison_applehorn says:

I guess im gay too, as ive always liked H.I.M as well…or maybes it may be because chicks love the band and with a little alcohol and H.I.M the start dancin and getting dirty and the rest you can figure out!

  3. Fufkin says:

They went distinctly downhill after Love Metal.
But how can packaging faux goth angst aimed at teenagers be the daddy but Alter Bridge are brushed off as ‘corporate’?

  4. moyles says:

i used to like to him also… 8 years ago when i was 12

  5. Zoker says:

Wait.. really? Really??? HIM? That HIM??? Is this some kind of bad joke??!?

  6. Metal Fuckin' Dave says:

The first couple of albums were on constant rotation at my old singers house. This was long before Bam made them famous over here. Even then I could tell this shit was gonna be huge. I could tell this because of my immediate repulsion towards the music.

  7. Stabitha says:

There’s always been a part of me that likes HIM, but I figured that was because I’m a recovering fat goth girl.

  8. timmah says:

I got into HIM back when I was on tour in ‘04, and loved them. Listened to Love Metal, and really liked a bunch of Dark Light, but it was like suddenly the light just turned off, and I started to dislike their sound. It was weird how it happened, liked it, liked it, liked it, nope done with it. Everything sounded the same, no variety, and that was it.

Can’t go back to em now, they’re just bland to me now.

  9. Dr schwine-hoot says:

Last 2 albums were their best yet. Have been a fan for about 10 yrs now, but they keep getting better & better as song writers and musicians… Sounds like this is gonna be a little softer than “VD”. Interested to hear this one.

  10. RockOutWithMy...YouKnow says:

Wanna know how I know you gay? You like HIM.

  11. Nate says:

Axl, what ever ounce of respect I had for your musical opinions just went flying out the door, into my preppy neighbor’s toilet, and got flushed down with a massive, mainstream turd.

Congrats, you deserve to be quartered. How does that make you feel?

  12. IAmTheClitCommander says:

    This is gayer than Creed.

  13. Tudor says:

I got aids listening to this it was so gay.

  14. Marcel says:

Saw Paradise Lost opening for them in 2008. Ofcourse the venue is filled with screaming girls, and during the set Nick Holmes jokes “anybody know who we are?”. Apart from me and the few other Paradise Lost fans, I don’t think the audience did.

    • Fufkin says:

It’s a desperately unjust state of affairs when Paradise Lost are supporting HIM.

Like The Beatles supporting Oasis. Kind of.

  15. Sean says:

We all have our guilty pleasures….but man, wouldn’t have suspected Axl enjoying this crap reserved for preteen goths considering all of the other stuff he rips on. I tried to listen to them, but the lyrics were just too ridiculous to be put up with.

  16. Bronson says:

so you hate flyleaf but love HIM ??? queerrrr

  17. SlickerDrip says:

    Axl’s a HER

  18. DICKHOLE says:

i also am surprised!?!?!?!? why axl why?

  19. Macmanus says:

HIM may not be “metal” or even “cool to listen to” but I have always been a fan. I have mad respect for Ville Valo and the rest of the band to have the balls to play what is on their hearts. Hard rock doesn’t have to always be about death and mayhem. Look at Killswitch Engage, their lyrics are very uplifting but they can rock as hard as anyone.

  20. Brian \m/(-_-)\m/ says:

i read this post and then went back 2 the top 2 check the author, cuz i figured it must b gary suarez…i guess not

  21. Kye says:

Just saying, I emailed you guys about this like 5 months ago lol

Anyway, I’m hoping it’s as wicked as Venus Doom, but their choice of producer scares me

  22. Noel says:

you have lost all recognition in my eyes…..your lower than poop.

nah, just kidding. but still, really? HIM? my ex girlfiend from freshman year liked him, and even she moved on.

  23. MSalonen says:

I love when pop-hating elitist douchebags think that its their duty to hate music like this on principle, rather than solely personal opinion.

Music being pop doesn’t make it bad. Same goes for something being mainstream. They are not mutually exclusive.

    • rkuder says:

      Agreed x10.

      • Lybrium says:

        agreed 100%

So let me be the first to make this clear to you, it is many of our PERSONAL OPINIONS, that this band is no good.

And just to reiterate, I agree that there is much good pop out there, it’s just buried under a hell of a lot more crap then most other genre’s.

  24. groverXIII says:

I can’t stand HIM… but I like their ‘Wicked Game’ cover. That’s it.

  25. brcarter479 says:

i dont have a problem with them being different. i have a problem with them sucking.
this sucks. vlle has an alright voice on their heavier songs but im not much for his lighter slow voice.

  26. rachel says:

I love the Rebel Yell cover. Their Don’t Fear The Reaper cover isn’t bad either.

  27. SourDeez says:

I think HIM sucks, but I can’t talk shit. I like the first two Avenged Sevenfold records.

    • Lybrium says:

you know what man, I STILL like “waking the fallen”, there isn’t anything wrong with that album….is there? haha, seriously though.

      • SourDeez says:

I know, if you forget what the band turned into, their mall-dwelling fanbase and their ridiculous attitudes, that album is fucking sick. It’s got something for every type of metal fan.

  28. Martin says:

It’s so funny when idiots uses so much energy on hating a band, and claiming they don’t care..

I love HIM. Their older stuff is better, but still, can’t wait for the new album.

  29. Jonathan says:

Meh. I liked a few songs off their 2005 release, whatever it was, but that was just a little before I heard All That Remains, which introduced me to the world of metal.

These guys aren’t bad at all, but I’m not sure if they can really be considered metal… they stand out to me as a deep rock sort of group… it’s hard to place them. Like a moodier, less heavy version of Katatonia, or maybe Opeth.

I still listen to Under The Rose every now and then. Other than that, these guys generally don’t visit my ears often…

  30. Lybrium says:

    I concure with meh.

    • Lybrium says:

WAIT WAIT WAIT, since one of the most recent bands to be bashed on MS was ALTER BRIDGE, I think we should have some sort of “Battle Of The Not-So-Metal Bands” that have been discussed on this site. Ok maybe that would be a big waste of space, but; so is this! Honestly is HIM any better than Alter Bridge? really.

  31. Benjamin says:

    I’ve got cupcakes!

    I’ve got cookies!

    I’ve got CAKE!

  32. Rob Kurkjian says:

I actually agree with you Axl I love HIM, One of my guilty Pleasures

Villie is the man just sayin

  33. Hahc Retsam says:

Jeez that song was pretty boring, I’ve had more fun watching Antiques Roadshow.
