THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT MUSICIANS IN MY LIFE

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 at 5:00pm by
It’s all subjective I know… to some, this doesn’t even chart. But to me, these two musicians are it.
Ravi Shankar and George Harrison – “Prabhujee”

And this here is my favorite musician of all times, he has inspired me more than almost anyone:
Paul Horn

Great job, Devin. Really cool stuff. It’s great to hear from a musician who’s a real and humble human being. You are the anti-Mustaine!

  • Gaia

Im glad Devin has somewhat unguessible influences, especially from listening to his music you wouldnt have guessed Paul Horn being an influence. I think its easy for any metal musician to say Hetfield or Iommi or KK Downing being a main influence, but to have quite an indiviual influence like Paul Horn shows differentiation and just shows what makes Devin’s music Devin’s music. Different. And in my opinion better. Love ya Devin! (yeah I said it) Thanks for today, see you at Bloodstock 2010!

  • Dave B

I’ve read through almost all of the columns by Devin today and see no reply comments. You could learn a lot from Eyal from Daath. He replies to the fans when needed and has a great interaction with them.

Come on Devin. Respond to these schmucks. It would make their year.

    • Ender^Wiggin

Devin is gonna participate in a chat. Isn’t this enough?

      • Dave B

Hmm. Must have missed that……and the class on being humorous.

I’ll do better next time, I swear it!

  • Miika

He has written some reply comments under the name “DT”… Check previous columns. He also regularly interacts with fans on his forum if you didn’t know it yet.

    • Dave B

I did not know that. Thanks Miika.

I guess I was trying to have some fun with that, but oh well.

Awesome Devy, I had not heard these. Have you heard of Harry Manx? he is a musician who resides on Salt Spring Island, He is a Blues player, but spent something like 14 years in India learning to play a Mohan veena given to him by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. I think George Harrison also recieved one of these instruments, beautiful sound! Anyway, thanx for the post’s, and for just being you.

BTW: I was on Van Island hiking all summer this year, your music was with me up on the peaks of Strathcona…Fucking beautiful my friend.

Got to see Ravi last month in SF, and it was totally amazing. You got great taste, Dev!

  • BEHEMOHAWK

    Awesome stuff

  • rachel

amen to improv being one of your influences! Im a jazz/classical flutist myself. We have some crazy awesome flutists out there like Paul Horn. Check out some Eric Dolphy jazz flute. So listening to this reminded me of a certain metal band that either makes people fall over themselves to compliment or makes them throw up: are you an Opeth fan?

  • john locke

Is Paul Horn related to Jim Horn? Cause Jim used to babysit me, and it was only when I grew up that I understood his significance in the musical world. If not, I’m still gonna research his catalogue.

  • Asills2129

This has nothing to do with this post…but Devin if you are reading this man…I have to let you know that “THE WAY HOME” has changed me man. This song is fucking amazing…Best song on the album…Thank you for sharing this with us man. This song has all the elements we complain that main stream music today lacks…Feeling, originality and talent….This is what everyone should be blasting. IF so we would have a lot more talented musicians out there. Anyway, thanks a lot bro.

When the lyrics kick in, it’s the angriest sounding voice in the world, juxtaposed with the softness, it’s chilling.

  • Sandy n Papo

this music was made in Apu´s store, lisa simpson was watchin while eating veggie hot dogs

  • TherRacoon

Ravi…. gotta have infinite passion for mathematicaly connected feelings of the human race…

    !DTP IS THE SHIT!

  • Nick

Awesome, I’m glad to see ravi shankar getting some love. I saw him a few years ago and it really was a mindblowing experience. If those are your influences I can really see why I enjoy your music as much as I do.

  • SYL Townsend

The hummer was definitely influenced by Paul Horn

  • http://www.loudfarmer.com Dedd

Addicted is awsome! Me and my gf are probably your biggest fans. We’ve followed you your whole career and we love virtually everything in your back catalogue. When we’re getting married we WILL have a Devin/SYL song in church! :)

    Take care and stay metal.

    Greeting from Sweden
