DO THEY MEAN THAT LISTENING TO 20 MINUTES OF ISIS MUSIC FEELS LIKE 40 YEARS?

I still can’t decide what I think about Isis’ latest effort Wavering Radiant. On one hand, the Joe Baressi-produced effort is easily my favorite Isis release to date; the production is bigger, the songs more concise, the album less rambling. On the other hand, I’m not sure I’ll ever dig this band as much as people think I will or as much as I’m “supposed” to; I just find them boring most of the time. Sorry.

I do, however, dig the new video for the Wavering Radiant track “20 Minutes / 40 Years.” It’s trippy and artsy, but it’s really dark. That black ooze kind of reminds me of this Star Trek: The Next Generation episode I just watched (#nerdalert!) in which Troi’s shuttle-craft crashes on a planet inhabited solely by a filthy, evil, and very powerful slick of intelligent black ooze. This video is pretty cool but it’d definitely be hotter if Marina Sirtis were in it. She’s a fox!

My friends enjoy this band so much, and I do not see why. They’re boring.

Fuck to the yeah. Star Trek….

That’s the episode where Tasha Yar gets fired!

I don’t agree that they are boring, well maybe if you spend all day headbangin to All Shall Perish and then try to get into it…I guess you just gotta be in the mood. Sweet vid.

I definitely understand why some people don’t get into this band. To listen to an entire album takes a certain amount of patience and in comparison to some of the more frenetic acts out there now, ISIS might come off as boring to some. Even as a fan, I have to be in the right mood to listen attentively (long drives are good). That being said, they are one of the most impressive sounding live acts I’ve ever seen. Their live sound is nothing short of suffocating.

I would love to see them, I’ve watched clearing the eye too many times :)

Too true. The atmosphere they create in a live setting is amazing.

I agree. It is not something you are going to throw on real quick on a short drive. It is mood music, have to be in the right mood. Get really high, chill out and throw on Oceanic, listen to the whole CD and if you still don’t like it, then….whatever, not for everyone.

I quit weed a long time ago, and have never heard Oceanic in any other state other than sober. And yet, the thought of listening to it while high kinda makes me wanna light up a spliff. :)

As for Wavering Radiant, I think it’s one of their weakest albums. It felt to me like they were going through the motions, as it lacks the emotion of their previous works. But hey, maybe it’s just me.

It’s amazing what you can do with black acrylic paint these days.

I really like the band, but like the above comments, you have to be in the right mood to listen to them. For me, it’s long drives, when I finger paint, and when I relax.

Isis freaking rules! I can listen to them at any given time of the day. Though they are even more awesome when you’re wanting to just sit back and relax or for a nice long drive. Their songs are like taking a long meandering walk across a warm landscape that is filled all types of surprises. I really like Isis.

That black ooze is ferro electric liquid. Basically, it is oil with ultra-fine iron particles suspended in it to make it reactive with magnetic fields. They are moving magnets beneath the ooze to get it to stand up into the weird spiky shapes. Cool stuff.

I saw Isis about a month ago and Im still not sure what I thought of it. I absolutly love them on record, despite not listening to them a great deal, but live it was kinda like whaaaat? Very repetitive, obviously and just not as enjoyable as I expected it to be. I can definitly see why people dont get them or arent into them cause theyre totally inaccessible and even boring if you are fixated on them alone like you are in a live setting. Isis are brilliant for chilling out to, or working to, or on a bus cause your attention is devoted to it.

  • Moose_Knuckle

These guys never cease to amaze me, dunno how people can find them boring i suppose you’ve just gotta be into the atmosphere and build ups in the songs. ive seem them live a couple of times now and there always very impressive.

Great video, but I’ve become very fond of the Holy Tears video:

boring. Oceanic/Panopticon are among the best albums of the decade, and I’m pretty sure they do destroy when playing live. but their new approach just don’t work to my ears.

  • Charlie

One loud Meh! Their music is way to repetitive for my tastes.

I thought Wavering Radiant was one of the most relaxing, entertaining and enjoyable listens this year. It’s nice to chill out and listen to an album and not be pummeled from start to finish at times. Not all bands can pull it off, but I think Isis did with ease and excellence. But don’t get me wrong, I love having my ears pummeled. I also like the word pummeled……. Pummeled.

  • Greywhind

Ferrofluid (the black, magnetic fluid in the video) is great. I’m planning to try making some at some point.

  • Blyan

Favorite band. Wavering Radiant: favorite album. It’s always hard to hear people call your favorite band boring, but I guess it all comes down to opinion. I liked the video, but I think Holy Tears was the best. Dominic Hailstone in my opinion was the perfect visual interpreter for the music of Isis in the realm of video. For still imagery it will always be Aaron Turner.

So true Vin! I bought Panopticon and Wavering Radiant for a trip upstate and nearly caused an accident on 87 asleep at the wheel! On one hand it does seem cool at some points but it’s not allways ideal for me to go to sleepy land.

  • Metalcelt

This from someone who thinks “The Blue Record” is the dog’s bollocks? Fuck, Oceanic alone could crush half of today’s Deathcore/Metalcore bands that are slobbered over on this blog.

  • Morbidblast

    Amazing band!!
None of my friends dig them and it seems like its the same with a lot of the dudes commenting.
I think its just one of those things. I loved them from the first time listened to them.
    Hail Isis! \m/
