I “WITHER” FROM BOREDOM

Like Dream Theater’s latest effort Black Clouds & Silver Linings, the band’s new video for “Wither” — one of the meh-est tracks on an album full of meh — is completely stock and totally underwhelming. Footage of the band on the road / in their bus / back stage / signing shit / etc etc blah blah blah intercut with out-of-sync live footage of them performing the song… great.

But I still love this band to death and always will. Next time around I really hope they take the necessary time to write and record an album the proper way, like Scenes From a Memory and Six Degrees. And I’ll go see them live pretty much any time they come around.

is it just me or does this bear a frightening resemblance to creed?

  2. Lybrium says:

mhmmm, well I liked the first half of black clouds….. but it did seem to…wither, on the last few tracks. It seems we have a theme of boredom today, maybe we should discuss some interestingly boring bands, like…EARTH! Anyone heard “The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull”?

    • Deaner says:

Yes… I like that album. Just because its 30 bpm doesn’t mean it’s boring, just really slow. Good to fall asleep to, in a good way.

      • Lybrium says:

Yea thats kinda what I was eluding to…It’s actually a favorite album of mine, even if you’re not falling asleep :)

  3. Lybrium says:

Hey everyone who reads this, listen to the beginning of “The Shattered Fortress”, then listen to the beginning of Tool’s “Triad” hehehe.

  4. MoonSnake says:

i actually quite liked this album. i thought it was better than systematic chaos, and wither was just a cool, solid, metal ballad. although you are right vince; i would thoroughly like to see them write something on the level of six degrees or scenes. but this is how dream theater has always been – all of their albums are good, and every once in a while they just strike gold.

  5. Couldn't Disagree More says:

Don’t care about the video one way or another, but love the record and love this song.

  6. Jay says:

The video had some decent shots in it, honestly, but what’s with this singer-songwriter stuff? Please bring back teh progz plz.

  7. Slaughterhouse says:

Anything they put out is quality! They are fucking amazing! Plus they know how to write actual compositions and not just wankery for the sake of wankery! The only thing that this record needed was some sick ass bass solo’s from Myung!

  8. Marc says:

It is sad that one of my all time favorite bands has worn down to this.

  9. Glenn says:

Agreed on the video’s meh-ness. Didn’t Bob Joni close the book on the “road weariness” thing in 1987?

As for the next DT album, I hope the band brings in some outside ears in terms of a producer. Portnoy basically explains BC&SL as “if ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but since the overall improvement between BC&SL and SC isn’t all that great, I’d say it’s worth reexamining that assumption…

  10. Gaia says:

Dont like this album. First song is probably the only one worth bothering for, I even bought the three disc special edition. Kicking myself now. BUT I am a massive DT fan and this album was such a disappointment, just like Systematic Chaos and Octavarium. Bring back the good DT of old, More albums like Six degrees… and Scenes… However, I do dig Train of thought, so perhaps some of that aswell.

  11. Hendecahedron says:

the video was ok, but the song… it sounds like something rehashed from Falling into Infinity; I don’t know… I guess I just expect them to release another Awake, or 6 degrees.

  12. Blashyrkh says:

Underwhelming? what did you expect? they’re clearly playing in BRITAIN.

  13. Rik Powell says:

I like the album, I’m not a huge DT fan but I think this is my second favourite album after Train of Thought. But yeah this song sucks.

  14. Ender^Wiggin says:

Black Clouds is a great record and the video is pretty cool. Akerfeldt is in it so it wins by default.

  15. Malacoda says:

Black Clouds had some good songs, but it had way too much filler. Wither is included in that filler, and the video is boring.

  16. sbattle says:

all i say was Mike Portnoy walkin in at the start with a foamy cup o beer…

isnt he that sober recoverd alchoholic? here here to being a drunk for fun!

    hand that guy some Jager.

  17. CYN1C says:

    DT and Opeth. epic greatness.

  18. Arthur von Nagel says:

The chord progression sounds suspiciously like Wind of Change by The Scorpions. I kept waiting for the whistling solo.

  19. Rage says:

    PETRUCCI FOLDING PANTS?

    GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME

  20. Alex_P says:

I actually liked Black Clouds and Silver Linings significantly more than Systematic Chaos and slightly more than Octavarium. I find that Wither is one of the better power-ballads they’ve done in a while, although it is probably still the album’s weakest.

  21. Mitchell says:

Wither is kind of the weakest song by default. Hard to compare them to 13-19 masterpieces. BC&SL is always interpreted differently by fans. It’s been blasted for having none of the songs relate to one another and heralded for the epicness they hit on Count of Tuscany.

Since DT is my favourite band evarr, I’d say this is their 3rd best disc after Scenes and Train of Thought.

  22. Trux says:

I also think that Scenes and Train are the two best albums by DT

Falling into infinity and Octavarium are the bottom two…

Funly , I dont think Six degrees is that great……….

And black clouds is a decent record……. not their best not their worst , but a decent one….

  23. groverXIII says:

The new album was alright, but I really didn’t like this song. Give me the heaviness of Train Of Thought any day over this.
