SOUNDSCAN WEDNESDAY: A BIG WIN FOR DEVIN TOWNSEND
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 1:00pm by Vince Neilstein
Them Crooked Vultures debuted in the Top 20… how ’bout that. Not surprising given the cast of characters, I suppose. MetalSucks guest blogger Devin mothafuckin’ Townsend debuted in the Top 200, while a few other metal releases maintained. It’s all holiday shlock and best-of compilations from hereon out.
[UPDATE: Devin will be calling in to the Metal Injection Livecast tonight at 8pm EST! Make sure you tune in; get details here.]

HELL YEAH DEVIN!!
I’d really like to see him sell that much again next week. Wishful thinking, but still.
My eyebrows raised at the Slayer/Dethklok thing. I guess it’s because there are a shitload of fanboys that watch Adult Swim who went out and bought that album simply because it’s on Adult Swim. It is a great album, I’m just saying that there is a great chance that is the case.
I think it’s due to the fact that every Slayer song sounds the same compared to the actual diverse mind of Brendon Smalls (something fresh and exciting), and generally only die-hard slayer fans will be interested in anything new by the band and purchase the CD…they could shit into a microphone with a riff in the background and people would still be interested just because it’s Slayer.
I think it’s because Slayer takes themselves seriously, and Dethklok… well, don’t.
Or the fact that Brendon Small has a degree from Berklee and probably knows how to write more than Slayer do. I guess that’s the same idea there, knowing what you’re getting and all.
slayer are lame 50 year olds nowadays. at least dethklok is funny.
Well, they must be going to see them live, too since that tour did huge numbers.
By the way, I must say that the Soundscan feature you guys run is always a highlight of this website.
fuck metalsucks metalinsider does it better and i beleive did it first
I bought my copy of Addicted today… god, I’ll be listening to that shit nonstop for months…
For the record, Addicted is also the only good album on the list…
“A cartoon band is very likely going to out-sell Slayer. Ponder that for a moment.”
It’s a fucked up world
I’m more bothered by the fact that Atreyu’s outselling Devin Townsend.
indeed. devin’s album should be selling 10, 20 times more.
Dethklok albums sell because people are exposed to it, many people watch or at least know of adult swim. The songs can be as monotonous as Slayer but it doesn’t matter, people actually get to hear these songs. There aren’t many other TV stations you can turn on to see anything metal related.
I don’t watch it but I assume there are commercials for the Dethklok album during breaks, in addition to the songs on the album being played throughout the episode. People get to hear them and like them, so they wanna go out and buy it. Obviously Devin, Ihsashn, Metallica, didn’t guest star as themselves, but were there any Emperor tunes playing? any SYL in the background of any scenes? any commercials for the albums put out by the people guesting on the show? Obviously there’s probably too much paperwork to make that happen but if I had to guess why Dethklok sells, its because people actually get to see and hear them. that’s lame, but its true.
I got preorder number 1424 of Addicted, so there’s at least that many preorders I guess….
Great result for a great album though, glad to see it.
They may be a cartoon band but they Fucking Blew The Roof off in San Jose Last Week. Best sound of any band this year.
I saw “fucking blew” and had to step back for a second to get the rest of that sentence. I almost thought you didn’t like them for a second lol.
The new Devin Townsend album is amazing. I’d go as far as to rank it up there with the best of his works.
As for Dethklok outselling Slayer: The fanbase for Dethklok is bigger than Slayer. There are people that don’t even usually listen to metal that like Dethklok purely for the comedy aspect. Slayer just needs to hang it up. World Painted Blood isn’t exactly a bad album. It’s just highly repetitive and sounds like every other album they’ve put out.
I think if there’s ever a Big Four of Thrash Metal tour, that should be the farewell tour for all four of those bands. Death Magnetic is a respectable album for Metallica to retire on. Endgame is definitely a high note for Megadeth to retire on. World Painted Blood isn’t a great album but good enough that it won’t leave much of a bad taste in people’s mouths if Slayer were to retire. And Anthrax… well, unless they put out one more really good album with John Bush, then I think We’ve Come For You All is about as good as we’re going to get with a final album from Anthrax.
Good work Devin! The new DTP project is alright, I’m not completely sold on the chick singing, but I dig the riffs.
Dethklok outselling Slayer is definitely a shocker, but I saw them both live, and I have to say I did enjoy Dethklok more. I think if people stopped calling Slayer a bunch of washed up 50 year olds and actually listened to World Painted Blood, Slayer would sell more albums. There is some repetition in WPB, but there are also some very good riffs. Their last three albums have sort of sounded the same, but I think everyone who has ever liked a Slayer song should appreciate their latest works and cherish the band while they’re still around…cause Slayer fuckin’ RULES!
P.S. Motley Crue: Dr. Feelgood and Kickstart my Heart are your only two good songs. You put them out like 20 years ago. FUCK OFF with the greatest hits!
People would stop calling them washed up 50 year olds if they weren’t washed up 50 year olds.
