RANDOM THOUGHTS ABOUT THE DIMEBAG TRIBUTE ALBUM

notreallydimebag

It’s hard to believe that Dime has been gone for five years, but December 8 will be the anniversary of one of metal’s bleakest moments. To cash-in on commemorate the event, Metal Hammer have enlisted a bunch of well-known acts to record Pantera covers (but not Damageplan covers, because, y’know, let’s get real here) for a CD that will come with the magazine. Metal Hammer has done this a few times in the past – I remember they had they entire Master of Puppets album re-recorded by various bands, including Mastodon, Machine Head, Chimaira and Trivium when that album reached its twentieth anniversary, and some of it was pretty good.

Get the complete track list for Metal Hammer’s Dime tribute disc after the jump, along with my thoughts in bold.

  1. Zakk Wylde – “Suicide Note Pt. 1″ – Fuck’s the difference between a Zakk Wylde solo track and a Black Label Society track? In any case, Zakk is an obvious choice to appear here, being Dime’s pal n’ all, and I’m sure he’ll do the song justice – in fact, hearing him play something that doesn’t sound exactly like every other song he’s been playing for twenty years could be refreshing. Unless he adds a bunch of pinched harmonics all over the place. In which case, y’know, fuck him.
  2. Machine Head – “Fucking Hostile” – Sure, why not?
  3. Malefice – “I’m Broken” – I don’t really know Malefice, should I?
  4. Avenged Sevenfold – “Walk” – This is cheating – A7X actually recorded this for a different magazine comp – it might have even been Kerrang! – a few years back. In any case, I’m sure this will piss a lot of people off just because it’s A7X, even though it’s actually a fairly decent, if totally uninteresting, cover.
  5. Evile – “Cemetery Gates” – I’m actually really curious to hear this. I have no doubt that Ol Drake can pull off all the crazy guitar solos, but can Matt Drake hit those high notes? You hafta kinda wonder why “Ripper” Owens or someone like that wasn’t enlisted. Also, this might be one of the last recordings we ever get to hear with the late Mike Alexander…
  6. Five Finger Death Punch – “A New Level” – I won’t be listening to this, and unless you hate yourself, neither should you.
  7. Biohazard – “Mouth For War” - In case you’ve ever wondered what Pantera would sound like with rapping…
  8. Sylosis – “Strength Beyond Strength” - This could be interesting; I have nothing really funny to say about it. Sorry.
  9. Chimaira – “Slaughtered” – It will shock no one that this is the cover I’m most optimistic about. I might be the only person in the world who loves Far Beyond Driven most above all other Pantera albums, and the brutal nature of the track, plus the staccato riffs, should fit Chimaira well. Bonus: no way in fuck Mark Hunter tries to sound like Phil Anselmo. He’s just gonna do his thing, I’d wager, like he did on that Puppets tribute I mentioned.
  10. Unearth – “Sandblasted Skin” – I’ll be kinda curious to hear this, too. I love this song. Unearth might have some fun with it.
  11. Throwdown – “Becoming” – I predict that very few people will be able to tell the difference between this cover and the original. Because it will sound exactly alike.
  12. Kiuas – “This Love” – Who the fucking fuck are Kiuas???
  13. This is Hell – “Rise” – As a Lambgoat reader might say, “No care ever.”

Blabbermouth says that the magazine and CD will hit news stands in the U.K. on December 16; I imagine it will take a little longer to get to us here in the States… unless someone just puts the CD up on torrent sites or whatever, which is not unimaginable…

    Just wow

    • Goatboy says:

Whoever this Axl Rosenberg dude is, he sure had a lot to say of the Kerrang Master of Puppets Tribute Album. The entire album was done very well….. What is the name of his band again? Nm, It does not matter. Just another loud mouthed music critic who couldnt hack it on the stage i guess…….

  • I love pantera to death hence the cfh tattoo of mine. Honestly maybe 3 out of the 10 or 11 listed catch my attetion.

  • bearbomb says:

Holy shit I totally forgot this website existed for like a month. What a bender!

Anyways, why don’t all these bands just gather ’round Dime’s grave and piss on it?! That’s essentially what they’re doing.

  • xCOOCOOKALx says:

they’re playimg the Evile track on sirius and he comes nowhere near the highs.

  • yanky says:

    lookin forward
    sounds kickass

btw it was kerrang that did the master of puppets covers cd
    or so methinks

  • Biff Tannen says:

why does diamond ‘lipstick’ darrell deserve a tribute? For inspiring legions of white trash O’Doyles to smash Busch Light cans on their heads ?? The dude got drunk, high, played the guitar and got shot. Wow, what a heroic life.

  • “I might be the only person in the world who loves Far Beyond Driven most above all other Pantera albums”
    not true
i love that album most too
its just so much more agressive than any of the others, not a weak song on it

  • Frampler says:

I hate to be a pedant, but the Master of Puppets tribute album was definitely put out by Kerrang. I was going to pick up this copy of Metal Hammer for the disc, but the presence of Five Finger Death Spunk has put me off. I hate the idea of owning one of their songs even more than I hate the idea of them covering Pantera!

  • I’m really curious about the Machine Head and Evile tracks.

  • AATHD says:

I agree with you on the throwdown song. MINUS THE SOLOS!! I remember having to sit through throwdown and they played A New Level, and stopped the somg before the solo!!! Idiots! The singer looks like the singer from alien ant farm…

  • Dan says:

Kiuas are a finnish band, quite power metaly. An odd choice for a Pantera tribute, but it should make a nice change from the rest of the bands featured on there.

    • Saunaman says:

Only the best singer and guitarist on this album, and they do deliver with BALLS!

    • Gaia says:

I like Kiuas good power/folk metal, though unsurprised they havent been heard of in the US.

    • Nymik says:

Can’t wait to hear the Kiuas song, i’m sure it’ll be the best on the album. Those guys are awesome!

    • Conor says:

I agree, this Kiuas song has huge potential. Everyone else on the list is neat (I’m very much looking forward to the Chimaira cover!), but Kiuas are just far and away a really interesting act, and I think quite capable of nailing a Pantera song. Especially a ballad, if you can call it that.

  • fasshole says:

Metal Hammer is one of the only magazines (in the UK anyway) that pretty much cover ALL metal subgenres as close to possible to equal. Hence the bands on this cd.

  • cougar party says:

I’ll be interested to hear some of those tracks. But seriously, what the FUCK is Biohazard doing on this complilation? I thought they became irrelevant 10 years ago. I really like Mouth for War and they get that track? lame.

    • brian roach says:

Biohazard and Pantera WERE sort of contemporaries, i think they even toured together, so I can see why they’d be on here. Agree that they are irrelevant, but they’re much less offensive on this comp than A7X and FFDP!

      • cougar party says:

Yeah, I always hated those guys though, but I guess they were contemporaries in their times. Anyway, FFDP is offensive and fucking terrible, but it makes sense from a business perspective since they’re a radio rock band that sells records. I’ll get flamed for this, but I a have a soft spot for A7X. Waking the Fallen is a good album in my opinion. They’re not a GREAT band, but I don’t mind them so much.

    • i think i feel about as excited about biohazard being on this as i do five finger death punch. both bands suck chode and shouldn’t be on here. well, actually 90% of them shouldn’t be. shitty bands.

  • Anthony says:

I agree: The Chimaira cover will be the best.

And I think giving FFDP slack while sticking up for A7X doesn’t make too much sense.

  • Joe says:

I love this site, but sometimes you guys just need to cover some more relevant shit. For instance, why the fuck haven’t you mentioned anything about THE CROWN reuniting (minus Johan) and putting together new material. For most metalheads, this is probably the news of the year.

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/ says:

1st of all, didnt kerrang release said puppets tribute for their 20th anniversary or something? idk wtvr.
2nd, yeah a7x did do the recording for kerrang a while back, and idk y ppl r gonna give it so much slack, it sounds pretty much exactly like the original
    3rd, chimaira will own

    • Mark says:

A7X’s cover is ridiculous, they even got Terry Date to produce it. What’s the fucking point of that?! It sounds almost exactly like the original, if you weren’t paying attention you probably wouldn’t notice a difference. So why bother?

Although having said that, I don’t think I’d want to hear “Walk” A7X-ised…

  • El Peras says:

“Between the buried and me” have an excellent “Cemetery Gates” cover…I wonder why they didn’t ask’em…by the way…anyone knows how much is the shipping cost for bringing Metal Sucks merchandise over to Spain? (I know I know…I should go and check it myself…just askin…)

  • Scott says:

Malefice are pretty cool. You guys must have missed Dawn Of Reprisal on the Metal Blade iPool earlier this year.

  • b-rad says:

Evile? REALLY??? i don’t forsee him hitting those notes. they should have recruited Into Eternity to take this one the fucking moon!!

  • Double D says:

As a gigantic Pantera fan for a long time, I have to say that I am oddly completely disinterested in this compilation. Also, I’m bummed that one of my favorite Pantera songs, “A New Level”, is going to be done by a band I have never heard before and never would have heard OF if not for this site and it’s members bashing them all the time (which does not bode well for the song).

    • Double D says:

Anytime I see a compilation tribute album for a band I love(d)*, I usually check out the back of the package to see who is on it, raise my brow, then put it back in it’s rightful spot. I guess I’m just not interested in other people remaking music that was perfectly fine to begin with.

      *Danzig, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, etc.

  • dicknballs says:

Fucking Zakk Wylde… yet again riding along Dime’s coattails. Just go back to designing shitty guitars and writing shitty songs.

  • SHOCKTROOP says:

he axl, far beyond driven is also by far my favorite pantera album. top to bottom I love every song on it. i also think it is the best sounding production. they really hit their heavy groove there between the thrash metal they started out with on CFH and the ultra heavy shit they ended with RTS.

  • BTK666 says:

Yes you should know who Malefice are, they are nice. Nice like waking up with a mouth around your cock, complete with the bonus of it not being you Dog or a dude.

  • Dave says:

I’m no big fan of Zakk, but he hardly “rode Dime’s coattails”. Their playing styles are not even remotely similar. Also, Zakk was/is FAR more proficient with his instrument than Dime was and was/is a FAR more well rounded player. Zakk could expertly play outside of the rock/metal genre if he chose to. Dime could not. Just watch some of Zakk’s guitar lessons on youtube. I’d love to see Dime attempt some of Zakk’s country chicken picking……and fail miserably.

I’m also no big fan of Dime, but it’s really sad to see companies like Krank and Dean Guitars so shamelessly cashing in on his name and tragedy. Just go to Dean’s Dime page and see how many Dime models they have….99% of which were released after his death. And check out the NAMM vids of that terrible Dime amp they’re making. Shameless.

  • Hendecahedron says:

And, Axl, nope, you’re not the only person in the world who loves Far Beyond Driven most above all other albums, there are a bunch of us who hold that album in high regard.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt says:

  • cookie says:

unless metal hammer is giving all the profits from this to his family,

    fuck them

  • JAS09 says:

Five Finger Death Punch? I hope Dime’s spirit slays those fuckheads and forces the people producing the album to remove the track.

  • 6infinite6hatred6 says:

See? Everyone in metal is too much of a pussy to cover Cowboys From Hell, because they know if they fuck up, Dimebag will rise from the greave and rip their balls off.

  • No,Axl, your not. Though VDOF was my first Pantera record and a straight up classic. Far Beyind Driven is the Pantera record I always go back to. Becoming, I’m Broken, 5 Minutes Alone, Slaugtered, always get me pumped up and ready to smash HEAD!!!!

  • No,Axl, your not. Though VDOF was my first Pantera record and a straight up classic. Far Beyond Driven is the Pantera record I always go back to. Becoming, I’m Broken, 5 Minutes Alone, and Slaughtered, always get me pumped up and ready to smash heads and eat souls!!!!

  • jagbag says:

Meh compilation is meh. I’m only interested in the Evile track.

    • d00shc00gr says:

I heard it on Liquid Metal… pretty disappointing. Shredder can’t do the guitar squeals and fakes it, singer can’t hit the high notes and fakes it… It just showcased that europeans have no place in American metal

  • Sammy says:

Axl, be serious and tell the truth. You wrote this while dropping a deuce, right?

  • Grymmbear says:

Can we get Yngwie on this so he can ruin Pantera’s songs like he did Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”?

  • KillaKyle says:

I won’t buy this product just for the fact that this very magazine was the reason for FURTHER bad blood between Phil and Dime.

Now they want to capitalize on this? Fuck those fish and chip eating wanks.

  • Trip Cahouet says:

Slaughtered is going to be nice.

Hatebreed should cover Strength Beyond Strength, that could come out nice (although I’m unsure how the guitar solo would turn out, but the groove is good for Jamey to sing over).

    Gojira= Primal Concrete Sledge, anyone?

Down= Live in a Hole (this is total sarcasm)

Alice in Chains= 10′s (that would be cool)

  • no-ghost says:

    the worst, shame.

  • Jesse says:

    Yes! You should know Malefice!

  • Darkplace_Assistant says:

Where`s the Chuck Schuldiner tribute album?

  • Kye says:

No one’s covering Cowboys from Hell?

I mean, I couldn’t get a fuck less cause I think Pantera are overrated as balls and pretty much every band on this comp doesn’t interest me at all, but considering how popular that song is, I’m fairly surprised no one is doing it.

  • D MANNS says:

You are not alone — I think far beyond driven is the crown of metal. The album whose drum sound changed metal — possibly the best drum mix ever. Just my shitty opinion…

  • Far Beyond Driven has always been my favorite Pantera album

  • Dimebag6sic6 says:

totally agree with the throwdown comment hahah. great band though

  • msv81 says:

Machine Head and Chimaira will be the only tracks worth a damn on this album. The prospect of Unearth doing “Sandblasted Skin” is slightly interesting, but I think his vocals will ruin it, doesn’t seem like their vocalist has a great deal of variation in his delivery. Who knows, though, still might be kinda cool.

As for the rest of the album, fuck Metal Hammer for dropping the ball so hard. This thing had the potential to be good as shit if they picked the right bands; instead, it’s going to be 90% horrible. With all the recent comparisons to Pantera, I’m very surprised/upset Lamb Of God didn’t do a track; it would also be great to see Slayer try and cover a band who is pretty far off from them in terms of Phil’s vocal abilities vs. those of Araya (obviously Slayer could pull of the music itself). Warbringer would also have been a good choice. Ugh, oh well, I guess I can just keep dreaming.

Oh, yeah, Axl…..as for my favorite Pantera album, I think I have to go with “Vulgar Display of Power” simply because “Hollow” is one of my all time favorite metal tracks by any band, and it’s a perfect closing track. “Revinventing The Steel” aside (because it’s pretty shittty imo), I’m hard pressed to pick a favorite, all of them are so goddamn good.

  • Skanes says:

Oh thank fuck no one is ruining Floods.

  • Tom says:

I’ve heard the final version of MH’s “Fucking Hostile” and it’s worthy. That’s a hard song to capture what was the essence of “aggro metal” circa 1992, but they did a damn fine job. The other schmucks? Nah.

  • Mike Arose says:

A7X really? That cover blew then it will blow now lookin forward to this though

  • Southern Discomfort says:

Metal Hammer. Say no fucking more, as soon as I read that my bowels shifted…. and it got worse from there on.

  • jonowev says:

Kerrang! did the Master of Puppets one, not Metal Hammer. And Kiuas are a folk metal band.

  • Reaper-X says:

    What, no Throwdown?

  • Thea says:

Seeing five finger death punch, avenged sevenfold, and throwdown on this list makes me want to cry the most. This is no way to honor Dime. I want to boycott this “tribute”.

  • Joe says:

Trevor Phipps is a big Pantera fan so Unearth might just do their chosen song justice.
As for Avenged Sevenfold…. i’m not looking forward to it.
I’d also like to add the opinion that Synyster Gates is a good guitariat (not the greatest) in a bad band.

  • MetalMatt says:

Far Beyond Driven is my fave Pantera album too. First CD I ever bought.

  • Dames says:

*who* is that girl in the photo????? wtf? With his big ‘I’m so into metal’ face as well???

  • Name (required) says:

Here is my list of bands that would sound hilarious on this.

    Behemoth – Cemetary Gates

Five Finger Death Punch – Anything

Guns-N-Roses – Slaughtered (I would fucking laugh in Axl Roses face. He’s such a douche)

    Emmure – Anything (Seriously, anything.)

thats all I could think of.
