OPETH: PITY THE POOR BASTARDS WHO DON’T LIVE IN ONE OF THESE SIX CITIES

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 11:30am by

A press release just arrived at the Mansion telling us that Opeth are turning twenty – TWENTY!!! – and are celebrating their anniversary “with six exclusive shows that will take place across the globe in various international locales such as Stockholm, Sweden; Essen, Germany; Paris, France; London, UK; New York City, NY; and Los Angeles, CA.” Opeth mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt says the band is going to spend most of January through March just rehearsing in order to make sure these shows are really, really special. That’s a long time to rehearse.

And when are Opeth shows not special? I’ve never seen this band give a bad performance. But if they’re pulling out all the stops for these gigs on top of all the stops they usually pull out, well, I’m sure these shows will be legendary. If you can make it, I feel bad for you – but hopefully the band will film and/or record at least one of the shows for posterity’s sake.

Get the dates and locations of the show after the jump!

March 30 – Cirkus – Stockholm, Sweden

April 1 – Lichtburg – Essen, Germany

April 3 – Bataclan – Paris, France

April 5 – Royal Albert Hall – London, UK

April 7 – Terminal 5 – New York, NY

April 9 – The Wiltern – Los Angeles, CA

Goddamnit, looks like I gotta make the 100 mile trek up to NYC on a Tuesday.

  • the benthic

the wiltern?? might be out of my price range………….

  • Frampler

Opeth in the Royal Albert Hall? I’m so going to have to be there. Axl, you didn’t mention that they will be playing two sets on each evening – one is Blackwater Park from beginning to end, the other is made of songs from their other albums.

    • fasshole

The Royal Albert Hall? Seriously, thats insane! I didn’t realise that they were big enough to play there.

    • Kuranes

Really? I wish they’d play Still Life from beginning to end.

      • Biff Tannen

No shit. Still Life is BY FAR their best album. They should have quit after that one.

        • yourgodsucksballs

You are wrong Biff Tannen. Go back to hating manure

          • BEHEMOHAWK

            NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Fufkin

‘Still Life is BY FAR their best album. They should have quit after that one.’

What utter sensationalist bullshit. You should quit after that comment.

  • gibberish

    … I HATE LA…
Looks like I’m gonna have to be there, though =_=

    • gibberish

And now that I think about it, at fifteen, I can’t exactly transport myself OR pay XD

      • Lorenzo

Every bone in my body hopes you die slowly.

        • Donk

La is shit. Shit as in if a nuclear holocaust were to happen, I’d hope it would wipe every inch of LA off the face of the earth shit.

  • yanky

    NEW YORK FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dan-Wolfson/557092638 Dan Wolfson

          your scene sucks

          • SourDeez

If you don’t live in New York, you couldn’t possibly know enough about our metal scene to make that judgement. Sure there are plenty of crappy bands, but there are also tons of great bands. And as for the scene, I can walk right down the street every Monday night and go see a wide variety of different metal bands, many of which are local and completely kick ass.

  • Brian

no info on live nation. wonder what cost at Wiltern will be

  • Kuranes

Looks like I might have to go up to LA for this. Hope the sound is better than it was at Progressive Nation.

  • brian roach

Surprised no New Yorkers bitching about Terminal 5 yet! So I will, that place SUCKS! London gets Royal Albert Hall, why can’t they do Carnegie Hall here? Or Town Hall? Or anyplace really, other than T5. SO bummed…

    • Lorenzo

Nope I’ll bitch right now. That was the worst venue I’ve been to in awhile.

The one and only show I’ve went to they started 45 minutes ealier than what it said on the ticket.

      Fuck them.

      • brian roach

Yea, it’s a horrible place to see a show, really bummed cause the idea of missing this is criminal, but i SO wish they’d have booked it somewhere else!

    • Hot Donut

      FUCK TERMINAL 5

      I HATE THAT PLACE

    • SourDeez

I’ve never seen a show at Terminal 5, what sucks about it? Is it worse than the Hammerstein where they confiscate your lighters, don’t have a smoking section, and don’t let you leave to to go smoke? There are few things worse than being at a kickass show and not being able to smoke a cigarette for 3-4 hours for fear of getting thrown out. But I digress…you guys make it seem like Terminal 5 is like Auschwitz. How bad can a venue really be? Do they not serve alcohol? Do they search you for weed? Is there sound terrible? Do they have a guy standing at the door punching people in the face when they walk in? Most importantly, is there a designated outdoor smoking area? I want to know what I’m in for here. Then again, there are very few things I wouldn’t weather to see Opeth live.

      • akeldama

Meh, im 19 and not only did they give me beer, i didnt have to pay for it. Good venue in my book.

        • SourDeez

From all the reviews, it sounds like the problem is that it’s crowded and sweaty. But that’s the best type of metal show in my book. If I’m fighting to stay on my feet and breathing is difficult, I’m right at home. Then again, it’s Opeth not Municipal Waste. I think Opeth is the only band I’ve ever intentionally sat down for at a seated venue, not because I didn’t like them but because I just had to smoke a spliff and take it all in.

  • robw

i will likely be roadtripping to nyc

  • LeperAffinity

THis is gonna be fucking amazing, blackwater park in its entirety and then a fan favorites/rarities set what more ca u ask for for christmas!!!!!!!!!!!! NYC here i fucking come!

  • SP420

    Not missing this.

  • Noel

jesus, least those damn swedes could do is make a chicago date!!!!!!! i cammand you to make a chicago DATE! AKERFELDTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • evilfatguy

Why am I the only person on the planet who isn’t all over Opeth’s balls? Unlike any other band I’ve experienced, seeing them live actually made me like them LESS (they weren’t even in my top ten to begin with).

  • rachel

Fuck, the New York show is 12 hours away via car. I would give anything to see this show. :(

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

ah, i love living in NYC. terminal 5 blows but who cares man? i saw them there on prog nation 08, wasnt soooooo terrible…

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

I love my creditcard. Bought the rather erm… steep meet & greet package for London. Check it out:

    - A GA ticket to the show of your choice
    - Access to Sound Check
    - Access to a VIP Meet and Greet with Opeth
    - An exclusive, date-specific VIP Laminate pass
    - An exclusive, date-specific T-Shirt
    - A Signed Tour Program
    - A Special Edition CD/DVD of “Blackwater Park”

Cost me an arm and a leg, but it’ll be worth it!

  • Charcaroth

This all seems like there may be a live DVD or album coming out of it..
