VEIL OF MAYA FUCK THIS PLACE UP

Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 10:14am by Vince Neilstein

Before their 2010 Boner Fest Tour with Devin Townsend, Cynic and Scale the Summit, Between the Buried and Me are warming up with a quick jaunt through the southern and eastern U.S. with Sumeriancore favorites Veil of Maya. Veil of Maya have always struck me as Sumeriancore pioneers… they’ve got their own thing going, and they were definitely leaders, not followers, when that whole scene exploded a year or two back.

MS reader JR Major sent in a clip of Veil of Maya performing a new song at Emo’s in Austin, TX on the aforementioned current run with BTBAM. Check out the as-of-yet-unnamed new song below. Listen closely at the 2:38 mark.

    “”Sumeriancore favorites”

    more like wannabe meshuggah-core

  • dicknballs says:

That guy in the crowd said fuck… what about the underage children at this show? Should they be subjected to such harsh language? I can’t believe this sort of behavior would exist at a metal show… for shame!

  • tobytobiasjones says:

I was there. A single person ahead of me. It was definitely a fun show.

  • Nick says:

How is this shit any different then any other metalcore band? Are you guys actually serious when you say you like these guys?

    • Scott says:

“How is this shit any different then any other metalcore band?”

      It’s not. This shit blows.

    • SonOF says:

I’d have to agree here. I don’t really have a problem with V.O.M, but they are just SOOO average, so generic. They aren’t terrible by any means, but there are A LOT of bands out there doing what they do, and quite a few do it better.

      • Maisonn says:

Metalcore? lol. Try Miss gay I

I reeeeaaallly wouldn’t put them in the generic category. There are other bands that play breakdowns and technical melodic riffing… sick. But VOM has a pretty unique sound to them. In this music scene, metal, there is no such thing as pure uniqueness or genuineness. Everyone sounds like someone else, it’s just how far from sounding identical you can sound. And I think VOM pulls it off rather well.

  • Keith Brown says:

That chorus guitar line they start with is really cool. I don’t really like the rest of it, though. I mean, I can see why you guys might like it, but too much of it is really derivative and honestly kind of boring.

  • big_metal_al says:

Hell yeah, great new song! Ya know these guys have been around for awhile, and even way before they were signed to Sumerian they were technical as fuck, so yes, they’ve definitely got the chops. Amazing live, too.

    “fuck this place up!”

Yeah, pretty good song. The first two mini-breakdowns are pretty cool, with that eerie riff above it. The big breakdown at 2:38 was good, just a little generic.

Overall fun song– look forward to new material. “Common Man’s Collapse” definitely caught my attention, but didn’t fully reel me in.

  • cosk! says:

veil of maya is the only band i let get away with breakdowns, idk why i like em, but i do.

    • masterjake5000 says:

Too many of u fuckfaces on here r afraid of fuckin breakdowns. “That song was amazing then a breakdown happened and now i hate this band!” Breakdowns are great but only when done right. Not Oceano, not Emmure, or alot of the other shitty bands that overuse them…. Veil of Maya does it amazingly and they keep them interesting. It seems like its become a trend on this site to automatically bash a band if they use a breakdown anywhere in their song.

Don’t be afraid of the breakdown. It wont hurt u. Unless its Oceano.

    …Yet another shit sandwich.

  • They always reminded me of Reflux, but I preferred Reflux.

  • Lybrium says:

Great song, I think that VOM are different from the generic attempts at this style, They’ve got something, Same with All Shall Perish and The Faceless.

  • groverXIII says:

I much prefer the song ‘Veil Of Maya’ by Cynic… these guys are alright, but not overly memorable.

    • Unkle Paul says:

+1, don’t really understand the hype for these guys, they’ll most likely be irrelevant in 5 years along with the boring genre.

  • Jay says:

Breakdowny bands annoy me, but these dudes and like After the Burial are pretty good.

  • Ian Wilmot says:

i like the synth-y sounding intro
    but other than that
    meh

  • MusicMuju says:

Hah, look at all the people who know nothing about music bash metal bands

  • Sean Hiatt says:

To all the people bashing on this Veil Of Maya vid for sounding like Meshuggah… TALK ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE!

Bands like this make me proud to be a musician now and days! I’m glad they write as technical as they do!
and guess what… what if Meshuggah ever stops playing?
you’re gonna have to settle with the entire Sumerian lineup!

Veil Of Maya, After The Burial and Periphery are taking metal to the next level… either you are backing that or not…

  • Shadowdrive says:

Veil of Maya ROCKS!!! And for all the haters, if you dont like their music, then just dont listen to them. You guys dont even understand sumeriancore. Because if you did them you could feel their beastly drumming, guitars, and lyrics. Sumeriancore to me would be the best music that would bring chaos and moshing to the fucking arena! Veil of Maya worked hard to get where they were, so dont try to reduce them to nothing!

  • jeff says:

who yelled fuck this place up?

also sumeriancore fuckin rocks idc what ppl say
