NO LOVE FOR HATE ETERNAL?

Monday, December 7th, 2009 at 4:30pm by

Over at Invisible Oranges, Cosmo Lee recently revealed his own #1 pick for Decibel’s 100 Greatest Metal Albums of the Decade: Hate Eternal’s 2005 release, I, Monarch. I don’t have that magazine in front of me, but if memory serves, it didn’t make the list. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen it – or any other Hate Eternal albums – on any decade-end lists.

I, Monarch isn’t my favorite Hate Eternal album – I’d argue that Erik Rutan far surpassed it with 2008′s Fury and Flames – but it is an awesome, awesome album. Few, if any, bands make more brutal music than Hate Eternal, and Rutan is constantly pushing the envelope of what death metal can be.

So here’s “I, Monarch” – the song – in Cosmo and Rutan’s honor.

Find out my own personal favorite Hate Eternal song after the jump.

Okay, it’s “Tombeau (Le Tombeau De La Fureur et Des Flames),” from Fury and Flames. A lot of the album deals with the passing of Rutan’s friend, former H.E. bassist Jared Anderson, who died in 2006 at age 31. I know it’s weird to say about a death metal song, but when Rutan screams “YOU SHALL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN/YOU SHALL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED,” it gets me a little choked up every time…

Same album, but Hell Envenom. That blast beat is super tasty.

  • I, Monarch

I think I, Monarch is the best straight-up death metal album of the decade…as if my username doesn’t say so already.

  • Kye

I agree that Fury and Flames was a far better album, but really, I haven’t heard much praise for that album either. The band as a whole seems to be criminally underrated

    • Master Chah

      Agreed

  • fasshole

Definately the heaviest death metal band. Not necessarily most extreme, that goes to None So Vile.

      or Brain Drill

i agree so much about Tombeau. its one of the few examples where the lyrics actually add to the song. i never wouldve realized how beautiful that song is without them

    • fasshole

I’l have to read them next time i listen to them. Another song that does that is The Aftermath by Origin, really really adds to that song.

origin definitely has some awesome lyrics, but the only song that i feel is altered or enhanced by the lyrics on that album is the title track.

other bands songs with lyrics that did this for me are Deathmask Divine and Warborn by The Black Dahlia Murder, The Empty Throne by Decapitated and almost every Isis song, especially The Beginning and the End. Also Alice in Chains has amazing lyrics, but thats getting off topic

  • ferocious_fetus

i don’t know about you guys but I thought the production on Fury & Flames sort of ruined the album for me.
Strange, because Rutan has produced some of the best sounding metal records I’ve ever heard in my life.

When I listen to it on my iPod it sounds alright but regular speakers (stereo, car, computer) it all sounds pretty distorted. I love (and play) drums but I have to say they are far too high in the mix and I can’t hear anything else. maybe I’m just nuts.

I did get to see Hate Eternal headline when JFACB cancelled a show on their tour and yeah, the new songs sounded awesome live. I know they are great songs but if the record had the clean sound of I Monarch it would hold a higher place w/ me.

  • wtfhax

Hate Eternal is fucking amazing. I’ve seen them three times, and each time they’ve played Catacombs which is my absolute favorite HE song. Erik Rutan is a god.

I remember buying Fury & Flames without ever having heard Hate Eternal ever.
I only knew that rutan had produced Kill from Cannibal Corpse and that was enough for me.
I remember hearing the opening to Hell Envenom and being genuinely scared of what followed. But holy fuck what a great album.

I think the best song on the album is Funerary March and the best song on I, Monarch is The Victorious Reign. That intro is so killer.

Hate Eternal will probably never make any top-anything lists because, dispite its brilliance and the stellar producation, it is simply too savage.

  • ripptuff

i liked that list but imho there were a few top notch death metal bands missing

    cannibal corpse
    hate eternal
    necrophagist
    cattle decap…

shit i thought they were great

i’m seeing them in new york city in a couple weeks. can’t wait!!!!

  • zac

im seeing them this coming Sunday with Cannibal Corpse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cannot fucking wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jason

ER is an excellent guitarist and producer but there is nothing memorable about HE’s songs. That is why no one ever talks about them, and also the fact that they never tour because Erik is busy making an actual living by producing.

    • Metalcelt

Man, I gotta completely agree with this. ER is a fantastic producer, but I find absolutely nothing special about Hate Eternal. I saw them a couple of times in L.A. a few years ago and couldn’t help thinking they were completely mediocre.

      • Mike

Pretty boring stuff, indeed. That’s saying something considering that this is Death Metal that we’re talking about.

  • Chris

Let me say first that Hate Eternal is my favorite death metal band.

That being said, I couldn’t get past Fury and Flames’ production. The production is so odd that I can’t enjoy the awesome song writing that Erik brings to every album. I, Monarch’s production was odd in a good way; that “fappy” and low end-heavy snare drum made the whole album sound more brutal. However, I think Erik went over the edge with this one. Basically, he has to not trigger Jade’s snare on the next album and turn down the goddamn drums in general. I still believe that it is a great album, but it was disappointing compared to the previous Hate Eternal works, for me.

But man, I, Monarch is godlike. Who else could make didgeridoo and tibetan drum passages be so goddamn heavy?!

    • fasshole

Seriously that digeredoo was a masterstroke, SO-FUCKING-HEAVY!

  • myke

love this band but always killer live!!!

  • http://www.masterful-magazine.com/ Choronzon

I, Monarch is my favorite HE record with King Of All Kings a very close second. The production on F&F doesn’t entirely do it justice. I favored the I, Monarch production more, as it reminded of their debut Conquering the Throne. Rutan’s slithering solos are always worth the price of admission. Can’t wait till they release a new album.

  • Mike Arose

These guys got no love in Orlando, Florida when I saw them with Hatebreed and Cannibal Corpse. Plus the sound guy fucked them over while Born of Penis got more praise. Damn it is their something wrong with that or am I alone in this

    • TheDonOfCacophony

You’re not alone. I saw them and everybody went fucking nuts for Born of Penis. Hate Eternal, opening for some stupid fucking reason, did nothing for the crowd. I thought it was kind of sad.

  • Trux

the headline is just right….. NO love for Hate Eternal … at least not from me.

  • anselmowitz

Awesome band & album, but I agree with the comment that Fury & Flames had ass production, I thought it was just the downloaded copy I got, but the CD sounds exactly the same. I think Roddy was a better drummer for HE also, I Monarch Ftw.
