PERIPHERY LIVE ARE A SIGHT TO BEHOLD

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 at 11:30am by Vince Neilstein

A month ago we saw Periphery headline a small club show in NYC with The Binary Code and Empyreon, prompting my brother from another mother Axl to write: “… these guys are the shit, and are gonna be huge. They had the crowd eating out of the palms of their hands, and, unlike some bands (I’m not naming names, but think Jack the Ripper), they actually have three guitar players for a reason.”

No longer do you have to take Axl’s (and my) word; Metal Injection has posted 4-camera live footage from that night’s performance of two songs, “Light” and “Icarus Lives.” Whether or not you like this kind of metal, there’s no denying that the band is tight, professional, and engaging, and that frontman Chris Barretto is a truly talented singer and an electrifying frontman.

Periphery’s Sumerian Records debut will drop some time in early 2010… it’s certainly on this writer’s “most anticipated” list for next year. In the meantime watch “Light” below and “Icarus Lives” after the jump, and don’t forget to check out a full recorded version of “Light” and more on Periphery’s MySpace.

    wigger core

  2. wordmcface says:

Ahhhhhh. I understand. You’re a theme band, based on the most depressing movie ever made Requiem for a dream

  3. Corey says:

Maybe it wasn’t a good first song to listen to by these guys but I listened to it for a minute and was pretty bored with it. I Fast forwarded thru it to different points looking for a non boring part and kept seeing the entire band just standing there, playing and mediocre singing.

    Nice whitechapel jab, btw.

  4. dicknballs says:

Meh – really not sure why everyone has such a boner for these guys. Boring and bland.

    • builtforsin says:

      Fact.

    • Russell says:

      agreed!!!

And his voice sounds like the local bands I used to listen to back in high school.

      • Watty says:

For those who might NOT have known, this singer is their second. He’s fair in studio, but obviously can’t pull it off live. Their first guy was better, but didn’t like to tour, so now he’s producing their record. However, the band isn’t really vocally focused anyway, so it doesn’t matter…

Periphery is basically a stepping stone for Bulb (guitarist with the Carvin – main songwriter), to break into the music scene, and break in he has. His solo stuff (with several different projects) is fucking amazing, anyone that needs proof can go check out Animals as Leaders, as he helped Tosin out with a fair amont of the album.

tl;dr – The band isn’t all that great, but seeing them is worth it to see someone who will probably go on to as influential as Townsend…

Good example of the real talent not represented in this video…

Yeah, i saw this video over on sevenstring.org when someone posted it there – honestly, I know they’re good guitar players but the shit is just boring. Good musicians don’t always make good music, this is a fact. However what Bulb did with Tosin on the AAL album is fucking incredible. Other than that, I stand by my “meh” – and Periphery’s singer does in fact, blow.

        • Strapping Young Lad says:

He’s actually their 3rd singer… Their last singer, Casey, was untouchable. He just hated singing live (and he also wanted to write pop songs more haha) But Chris is no slouch at all! http://www.myspace.com/462649025 here is a buncha Casey’s old stuff with Periphery, listen to Inertia… gives me goosebumps everytime.

    the vocalist’s hair is funny

  6. Lots of potential, the studio version of Icarus Lives is pretty cool! Creative stuff indeed.

  7. Kuranes says:

Re: “three guitar players for a reason”… “I’m not naming names, but think Jack The Ripper” – what’s that supposed to mean? Judas Priest? They only have two guitar players. Is there some other three-guitar band with some association to Jack The Ripper?

  8. fasshole says:

Anyone else notice the Terminator rip off?

  9. Owen says:

Singers quite flat at points and cups the mic.

    Bulb is amazing though.

    • Strapping Young Lad says:

yeaa… I am a fan of Chris, but he does cup the mic from time to time and come off flat here and there. He’ll get a lot better though, idk if you guys have ever sang in front of a metal band (I used to, rather poorly!), but it can be hard as all hell to hear yourself, even with an ear piece in. So i forgive him for being a lil flat here and there. As for Bulb and the rest of the crew, they kick ass as always!

  10. dan says:

this is the gayest thing ive ever seen

  11. Future Ruins says:

Not nearly as engaging as I was expecting. I guess I’ll have to check out some other stuff but this just sounds like emo-core Meshuggah. Awful idea. The drummer is pretty good though.

  12. John says:

If I wanted to hear dance gavin dance combined with meshuggah.. wait, there’s not ever a chance in hell that I’d ever want to hear that combination. This is the fourth or fifth time i’ve given this band a chance and they dissappoint me every time. Garbage bullshit, well played garbage bullshit, but still garbage bullshit.

  13. Elpants says:

I just vomited in my mouth a little bit.

Sorry, but leave the jump-da-fuck-up sounding bullshit to wigger-core and nu-metal. Unless that’s what they are trying to be, which I guess more power to them in sucking flaming dicks.

  14. Chris says:

i gotta say the vocalist really delivered on this performance-he kept his HIGH notes w/out sounding horsed,or giving out on holding the longer ones (and thats hard when you SING & SCREAM) i guess it was whomever there sound-tech was (cuz thats what sounded pretty bad) the drummer was pretty good to.

  15. blankman says:

The band itself is talented, but I feel this band is terribly, terribly overrated. And all those bands that sound like this and are inspired by this, are really a dime a dozen. These bands should be paying HEAVY royalties to Meshuggah. And the term “DJENT” is getting to be quite nauseating.

  16. wahhhhhhwahhhwahhhhhhhh says:

Awwwww all the wittle babies have their collective panties in a bunch.

  17. jc says:

There is definitely some potential here… they just need a “stylist” to give them some stage presence, that would help. (They look like a bunch of poor-lonely bachelors.)

  18. PatrickSTL says:

People are really pretentious. This band seems very competent. I wouldn’t listen to them but no reason to say that they suck.

  19. This band is too smart. Breakdown kids won’t get it and death metal elitists think it’s pussy shit. I’ll be buying this record.

  20. slumberjack1 says:

    Good drumming

  21. rockstrongo says:

    american fauxshuggah.

  22. Avoid The Light says:

I much prefer the demo recordings of this material via Bulb … without vocals.

  23. niko topshotta says:

if anyone see’s them live i’m sure they’ll think differently about the singer. he even went to berkley for some shit. and is a vocal teacher!

  24. Dimebag6sic6 says:

wow. way to hate on whitechapel. but uhh periphery is good shit. i think whitechapel is too but completely different genres
