RAGE AGAINST THE U.K.’S X FACTOR AND SHITTY POP MUSIC

zack de la rochaOur email boxes have been blowing up about this for the past week, but until the BBC and Billboard reported that it actually had legs I just thought it was another ridiculous Internet campaign.

The campaign is an online effort to get Rage Against the Machine’s 1992 hit “Killing in the Name” to grab the top spot on the U.K.’s Christmas Singles chart, a spot that’s been dominated by winners of the “X Factor” TV talent show (similar to American Idol) for the past four years. As of right now the RATM classic actually holds a 10% margin over Joe McElderry’s cover of Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb,” which occupies the number 2 spot at the moment.

While the fact that a RATM song is a serious competitor — let alone the current leader — is pretty amazing, it seems unlikely that Zach, Tom and the Ragers will be able to hold out. McElderry’s song was only released digitally after his victory in the X Factor final at midnight this past Sunday, giving it less time to rack up sales for this week’s chart than Rage Against The Machine, and a physical CD containing the McElderry track will be released tomorrow (Wednesday). Still, I’ve always loved Rage Against the Machine — especially the 1992 self-titled album from which “Killing in the Name” comes — and I’ll always root for just about anyone over more Simon Cowell-shepharded tripe.

The real winner here is Sony BMG, the company that owns the rights to recordings of both artists in the UK. Score one for the big boys upstairs.

There’s no way it will happen. Although it would be awesome if it did.

How about another online effort to get a good band to the number one spot?

  • http://www.last.fm/user/groverXIII groverXIII

Wait, number two is a cover of a Miley Cyrus song? A fucking cover? That’s like shit that’s been eaten, digested, and then shit out again. Secondhand shit. Second generation shit. Shitty seconds.

    • http://www.last.fm/user/M60Patton Patton

And that’s why we’re trying to put RATM on the first place ! And with enough help and support we just might be able to do it.

    • R. Joseph Smith

Another artist covering a Miley fucking Cyrus song would be the auditory equivalent of “2 Girls 1 Cup”.

  • lybrium

    Hahaha, great ending point.

  • joshkid

FUCK YOU, I WON’T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!!!
    MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!

    • metalguy

This is really awesome but wouldn’t assassinating Simon Cowell be more effective? Not to say funnier?

  • http://URI Will

    yeah for RATM!!!

  • d00shc00gr

    Oh, 4chan

  • Fufkin

Wham’s Last Christmas would have been a much better choice but I’ll be buying it again regardless.

  • bearbomb

This is pretty awesome. I had the privilege of seeing Rage twice last year. Amazing live show, especially for a bunch of guys who are now pretty old.

  • Tonberry

WEWEWEOWEOWEO FIGHT CAPITOOLISM AND BUY OUR RECORDS YO WOWEWEOWEOWE CHE GUEVARA SHIRTS YO

    • bearbomb

Yeah, 4 records in 18 years. They’re all about record sales.

      • Tonberry

The amount of records that they’ve released doesn’t change the fact that they’re more than happy to let the machine that they’re raging against put food on their tables.

        • Discipleofthewatch

Well, everybody’s got to eat! Would you like them to receive welfare instead?

          • bradylikesbigbird

and the reason they disbanded was because of their commercial status..and i dunno if your aware but uh the whole point of being in a band is to make money

        • R. Joseph Smith

Fuck that, they all should be farmers and shit. raise their own cattle and slaughter it and shit.

          • NoNameNoSlogan

bradylikesbigbird says: “and i dunno if your aware but uh the whole point of being in a band is to make money”
WTF!?!?! How about creating music and art, that actually has nothing to do with money your stupid douche-nozzle

  • Ryan

Who the hell covers a Miley Cyrus song? She’s been around for like, a week.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rik-Powell/286400508 Rik Powell

X-Factor chose the song themselves I believe. So that gives you some idea of how retarded X-Factor is.

Do you have the version of Killing In The Name Of where they edit out the part saying “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” because their record label told them to do it to be played on radio?

    (credit to John Safran).

    • nick

Any time i’ve heard it on the radio(and its been a while because theres absolutely no decently listenable rock station in NY) they usually just edit out the word “fuck”. “…you, I wont do what you tell me.”

      • DustintheWind

The radio edit i’ve always heard cuts that entire piece of the song out, right after the solo it cuts to the last “da da da DA DA DA” end of the song

  • hayisforhorses

Shame it couldnt have been merry crassmas

  • jonowev

Bought my copy. Next year we need to get I Cum Blood to the top spot!

  • Frampler

I live in England and I’m a bit embarrassed by the number of my fellow metalheads who are getting worked up about this campaign. The singles chart and X Factor (or Cunt Circus as I prefer to call it) should be irrelevant. Moreover, while I love the song for nostalgia value, it’s a pretty cheesy anthem for supposed non-conformists. Fucked With A Knife by Cannibal Corpse or Be Aggressive by Faith No More would have been better choices.

    • Superhans

the singles chart and x factor don’t matter but the point is that enough is enough… how much longer must this be forced upon us? there are loads of songs you could choose to do this but can you realisitically see 200,000+ buying fucked with a knife?? …. thought not
frankly most people in this campaign don’t care about sony receiving the money just wiping that smug smile of cowell’s face

  • Jizzmaster3000

For £0.29 I’m happy to buy for a cheap laugh, plus I hear a large chunk is going to charity. Tom Morello has already come out and said he’s gonna put his earnings from it into a UK charity.

Hey, we got Rick Astley to win Best Act Ever, why not?
