METALSUCKS INTERN MATT HEAFOWITZ’ TOP TWELVE METAL ALBUMS OF 2009

Thursday, December 17th, 2009 at 3:00pm by

wolverineMetalSucks intern Matt Heafowitz is making his editorial debut with his own Best of ’09 Br00tal-list! What can we say? The guy’s got great taste. We taught him well.

Albums that made me moist

havok - burn12. Havok – Burn

I’m not going to say that you haven’t heard an album like Burn before but so what, it’s thrash to the core and I just want to bang my head.

herewaitsthydoom11. 3 Inches of Blood – Here Waits Thy Doom

That good ol’ NWOBHM sound is the reason I’m writing this list today so it’s good to see it hasn’t disappeared. “Battles and Brotherhood” are words to live by.

SuspensionOfDisbeliefSMALL10. The Binary Code – Suspension of Disbelief

The album has some shortcomings as it’s only their first, but it shows so much promise. When you can write a song like “Suspension of Disbelief II” that sounds like Joe-jira and the gang then you’ve got my attention.

fedthroughtheteethmachinebiggest9. The Red Chord – Fed Through Teeth Machine

Top-notch riffs and tight song work are the metal prescription for a good album.

200px-Lamb_of_God_-_Wrath.JPG8. Lamb of God – Wrath

It’s not their most bestest work but nothing beats listening to the “Contractor” lyrics “big business is booming like it’s the 4th of July” while watching the fireworks on the 4th of July. God Bless America for giving us LoG.

Albums that got me wet

axetofall7. Converge – Axe to Fall

Forget Red Bull; listening to this album will give you all the energy you need.

SlayerWORLDPAINTEDBLOOD6. Slayer – World Painted Blood

Thank god for us metal newcomers that at least 1 of the Big 4 still bring it like they did back in the day

skeletonwitch-breathing-the-fire5. Skeletonwitch - Breathing the Fire

I just want to headbang to this album all day long. I don’t think it will ever get old.

bluerecord4. Baroness – Blue Record

Word’s really can’t describe the feelings and emotions one goes through listening to this album.

200px-TheGreatMisdirectCover3. Between the Buried and Me – The Great Misdirect

I wonder if there is a genre of music BTBAM can’t incorporate into their masterpieces.

200px-Cracktheskye2. Mastodon – Crack the Skye

Even the New York Times thought it was “fantastic in every sense.” Nuff said.

revocation - existence is futile1. Revocation – Existence is Futile

I believe that this album is going to go down as one of the marque albums for the younger generation of metalheads.

revocation at #1 ! finally somebody with some brains here. that album doesn’t get enough credit . and you nailed it with calling them the next generation of metalheads. they will carry the flag someday. we’ve only just begun to see what they can do

    • joshkid

oh yes they rule. just started listening to their album this week. heard it too many times to remember.

      • Watty

I can’t say too much as I haven’t given it more than a couple listens through…but Revocation isn’t as phenomenal as everyone is making them out to be.

And I’d say Bulb is going to be carrying the flag for the next generation of metalheads…his stuff is wayyy better than this, albeit a different style.

  • Bicro

I can’t say it enough. HAIL REVOCATION!

  • fasshole

    nice wolverine

  • metalguy

ohhh a Matt Heafy pun. nice list

  • SHOCKTROOP

Not a bad start for the intern. Great picks.

  • Caspar Colderson

Matt Heafy? really? I get Axl Rose, Vince O’neil and even Sammy Hagar. I like Trivium, but really?

    • Beauzaque

      Vince O’neil?

  • chris

Sweeeeeeeet list dude, I was expecting Mastodon or Baroness to be number one like everyone else’s list. “Existence is futile” is a kick ass album I loved it from the first listen!! and I’ve yet to look back!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Natalie

I dunno… I think the old intern has better taste…

just kidding :) very good picks.

  • FrostMechanic

MAJOR props for mentioning Havok! I’ve been listening to them since ’06, ’bout fucking time someone recognized their awesome.

  • Matt

The new BTBAM and Mastodon albums were fucking amazing. They didn’t just make me wet, they made me cum!

  • Malacoda

Damn – Revocation ended up on so many lists, I have to listen to it now.

But why the fuck is Wrath on there? it’s solid, but should absolutely not be on any best of lists.

  • WowWee!

Short simple list. You lazy fuck.

  • http://myspace.com/bizarrodrake Marc

    That’s a good list.

  • Alex_P

Excellent picks, overall. Revocation are one of the best up-and-coming bands out there right now.

  • inhumanrampager

Regarding your Slayer comment…did you even listen to Endgame by Megadeth? Now I love both Slayer and Megadeth, but I felt Endgame was a much better album and possibly should have been included, considering you seem to enjoy thrash.

  • bnope

Thank you for The Great Misdirect making an appearance. No, it’s not Colors, but nothing that has ever been released in the history of music is Colors. TGM is an incredible album, and Swim to the Moon could prove to be my favorite metal track of EVER. Smush.

Enough with Revocation!! I just can’t dig it.

    • Mark

      I agree.

  • brandometal

notice how all of those bands are north american and in the same subgenre [more or less]
