THIS PANTERA COVER IS HELL

I still don’t really know who This is Hell are, but they’re one of the bands that did a Pantera cover for that Metal Hammer thing, and now said Pantera cover, “Rise,” is up on their MySpace page.

And if all their music sounds like this, then, well, I’m not too sad I’ve been unfamiliar with This is Hell up ’til now. This sounds more like the worst Every Time I Die wannabes ever than it does Pantera.

Check out the song here, if you must.

Rise is one of my favorite Pantera songs, so I’m not going to listen to this. Since they’re “Every Time I Die Wannabes” and I don’t like ETID very much either.

The good covers on that disc are the ones by Sylosis, Evile, Machine Head and Chimaira. Those from Malefice, Unearth and Throwdown aren’t too shabby either.

I wanted to hear this since it sounded like it would be good for a laugh but I’m not seeing it on their myspace. Has it disappeared or am I just retarded? It’s not in the myspace player or whatever it’s called.

Myspace is always so hard to navigate, the pages are built like someone threw a dumpster’s worth of soiled diapers at the wall and saw what would stick

  • Johnny Death

Hey Axl, it’s been 30 minutes since you posted this and the song is not on the myspace page. Regardless of that and don’t get me wrong, I really dig most of Every Time I Die’s material (I didn’t like Burial Plot Bidding War at all) but I don’t get why anyone would want to be like them. From what I could stand to swallow of This Is Hell’s songs are very weak.

  • Brandog the Meowiest

The songs not very good but the bands not half bad. For some solid hardcore-punk check out their release Sundowning. Listen to Permanence and I dare you to tell me it sounds like an ETID knockoff.

    • Facebook User

Sorry, but the S/T EP is their best album. Haven’t listened to HC much these days but I recall they are a pretty solid band. Most hardcore sounds the same these days…with Casey Jones being a great exception.

this is hell is incredible, you dudes are missing out. i dunno much about pantera and haven’t really listened to em so i can’t say for sure if there cover’s shit or not. it sounded good to me? yeah travis (their singer) isn’t gonna sing exactly like dude from Pantera (showing my lack of knowledge about Pantera here) but that’s kinda the point of a cover, to put your own spin on it. The first time I saw This is Hell was in Philadelphia with Bane and Outbreak at The First Unitarian Church, it was off the chain. They’re a killer band and underrated in my opinion. They’re also really nice dudes and the guy with big eyes cracks me up. I’m just saying, give em a chance, don’t write them off because they do one cover you’re not a fan of.

OK, I’m an old hardcore kid myself, and think TIH is ok, BUT, how do you not know Pantera??

  • loganarchy

Whoa, I was just listening to ‘Vulgar Display’ today and I declared ‘Rise’ to be the best track on the album. I also pondered on how my band would cover the song (if I had a band).

Well, until the track resurfaces, I shall anticipate listening to it. I think the cover will work well because the song’s got a really hardcore attitude, and well, This is Hell is a hardcore band.

    • loganarchy

well, I didn’t like it. It didn’t completely suck but I think it’s a pretty boring cover

      O.o

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

Rise is awesome, but Regular People is easily my top Pantera song from Vulgar Display, maybe ever.

yeah, Regular People is a kickass tune.

  • Marc

decent band, great dudes. I didn’t like the cover myself but I don’t like covers period.

Every cover on the tribute album sucks except for Zakks, Machine Heads, and Eviles. There, summed up the album for everyone.

  • Thrashbuster

These guys never did much for me. The melodic hardcore thing is played out and there are only a few decent bands still doing it. I’m sure the cover is pretty ho-hum like everything else they have ever done.

Only palatable covers on the album for me were the sylosis, evile, and unearth covers. Throwdown is just trying way to fucking hard to be pantera in the first place to make the cover interesting in any way.

    • SonOF

I was thinking the exact same thing about Throwdown…I’m listening to it like “wow, Throwdown are pretty on point with this one,” but they ALWAYS try to sound like Pantera lately anyway, so it isn’t much of a stretch..

i would rather listen to this all day, everyday for the rest of my life than to have to sit through Five Finger Death Punch or Machinehead’s covers in their entirety.

This Is Hell are an okay hardcore band. Quite impressed that you havent heard of them to be honest, but it seems pretty ignorant on your part seeing as you write a metal blog… kudos to whoever it is in This is Hell with the More Than Life shirt, love that band!!

    • DemonicLemming

Yeah, but hardcore metal sucks shitty elephant balls, so I can’t really blame the writers for not being too knowledgeable about that specific sub-genre.

      • Marc

hardcore. as in hardcore punk. not hardcore metal. don’t be ignorant.

  • change

I love TIH but I don’t know why the hell they would do this.

  • http://unusualpath.wordpress.com phale

i like how the bearded dude has a picture of hands on his t-shirt, but they kind of look like his own hands.

    • SonOF

That optical illusion got me too..

  • The Overmatt

I saw This Is Hell as an opening band once. Thought they were shit.

  • SonOF

This is Hell is a pretty good hardcore band, not breaking any new ground or anything. And they are Long Island dudes, so I can’t hate on them too much.

    • SonOF

And no, they dont sound much like ETID, much more straight-forward hardcore..

      • SonOF

And sorry for replying to myself again, but Chimaira’s version of “Slaughtered” kicks ass pretty much as I thought it would. One of my favorite Pantera songs ever, one of the heaviest they ever did….Curious, did the Metal Hammer people provide the recording budget and whatnot for these tracks (I have no idea how these things work..not in the biz), or was that up to the bands? I mean if it is up to the bands, it’s kinda obvious why This is Hell’s cover sounds about 1/6th as good as Unearth’s (which kinda rocks); their budget is that much smaller…

I just listened to the youtube vid loganarchy posted.

I’m not going to say it’s bad. It’s definately not Pantera though.

    :)

if the vocals were more agressive this would be the best cover on there i think. the original always sounded a little thin to me. this one is beefy, vocals aside

Metal Hammer didn’t pay for the bands to record. We got asked to contribute a song on a Tuesday and they needed it that Friday. So we learned the song super quick and found a studio to let us come in super late and bang it out quickly for free, so that should explain the quality. In my opinion it sounds like TIH covering a Pantera song, that was the goal. I’m happy with how it turned out. As for the ETID comment, obviously that’s way off the mark and was meant to be a joke? I think? Thanks for the feedback.
