ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS THE BIGGEST VIDEO GAME COLLECTION IN NEW YORK

Friday, December 25th, 2009 at 12:32pm by Kip Wingerschmidt

Video-Games-PostersI have gotten way too into video games in the last year……and apparently I’m not the only one ’round here.

But THIS borders on psychotic.

I suspect more than a few of you out there are into gaming — any contenders for best of the year? My money’s on Uncharted 2……it’s like playing a fucking movie!

Chappy Cholidaze, y’all….

hands down call of duty 6: modern warfare 2…..

    fuck anything else….

    and batman: arkham asylum

    gotta check out uncharted….

  • groverXIII says:

For me it’ll be Assassin’s Creed 2 when I finally get it (should be in the next few days with Xmas gift cards). I have such a boner for that game.

    • Sam says:

+1 AC2 is such a huge improvement on a great concept.

      Honourable mentions:

      Arkham Asylum
      Dragon Age
      MW2

erm, sure there’s more but I forget.

  • Brutal Legend
    gotta be

    • fantasyh says:

Yes , Brutal Legend was quite epic, but the last missions were unfairly hard, and nearly made me pull my metal mane out.
I have to cast my vote for Assasins Creed, for the great lore. I can’t even imagine the amount of research

    • Jason says:

Brutal Legend was awesome but the RTS portions nearly ruined the game, which is sad

  • Tonberry says:

Both GTA IV DLCs were among the best written video games that I’ve ever played. They could’ve just as easily been plays. Modern Warfare 2 has probably sucked up the most playtime this year for me, and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor scratched an itch for quality JRPGs that’s been ignored for the past few years.

  • dot says:

dragon age origins. i rarely play rpg’s but when i do, it makes me skip school and baths. not a pretty sight if you’re in a tropical country, and the telltale signs are all there: sweaty balls you can smell the stench of, and your girlfriend won’t have sex with you. good thing the game was only about 60 (or was it 80) hours.

batman was great until i realized after i finished the game that i spent probably at least 60% of the time on detective mode.

anyone here used to play quake 3? i miss high school and quake 3. life’s a bitch when you’re older and there’s barely any time left for games and musical instruments. i wish i could just eat martin lopez’s brain and be great. /ramble

re: uncharted 2, a friend quit his job just so he could play uncharted 2′s closed beta multiplayer whenever he wanted to. i don’t have a ps3 so /shrug.

  • Niraj Patil says:

Finished Assassin’s Creed 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum. Both awesome games. Almost done with Unchartered 2, it’s still my favorite game of the lot. Brutal Legend is kinda disappointing with its gameplay. Gonna try MW2 next.

  • tyler09 says:

im thinkin Uncharted 2 (which has already won a shit ton of awards), CODMW2(fyi it is NOT COD6 because it wasnt going to be a COD game at first because of contract disputes and its a sequel to 4) and then Batman:Arkham Asylum(the trailer for the 2nd one is boner-giving)

  • SHOCKTROOP says:

call of duty. no doubt about it. I bought left for dead 2 at the same time I bought call of duty and I haven’t even opened the game up yet. call of duty never leaves my xbox

    • I'm not racst, but I hate Oceano says:

l4d is sick its perfect if you hate sitting for hours playing a game and you would rather jsut kill zombies for like 30 minutes and then go do something else.

  • Myopinionisbetterthenyours says:

I haven’t gotten around to playing Arkham Asylum or Uncharted 2 even though I got them yesterday but so far my is MW2.

  • uLy says:

Batman Arkham Asylum was excellent. Uncharted 2 was good but way overrated. I don’t want to play a movie, I hate those types of games (metal gear solid type shit). I like actual gameplay that’s not on rails and completely scripted.

  • Dimebag6sic6 says:

Assassins Creed 2. Like the dude up there said, the amount of research put in must be insanely high. I’m writing a comic book in the same vein and so far I’ve put in about 10 hours of research without writing a single word. Great game. so much more developed than the original. Has my vote for GOTY

  • Simon says:

    Batman: Arkham Asylum.

And talking about Bats- isn’t he the most metal superhero? He’s dark and mysterious, wears black, in The Dark Knight he basically growls and last but not least, he’s got point ears. Batman ist metal. Und krieg!

  • Nick from hell says:

Uncharted 2 is the greatest game of 2009 (and of the decade, imo), for sure. Batman: Akrham asylum was amazing but a little short. Brütal Legend was good but I would’ve like it more without the rts elements. However, the writing, voice acting and art direction was amazing.

  • you know what I’ve been playing over the holidays? Lost in Time, Duke3D, Alone in the Dark. tons other classic games. DOSBox is your way to free and easy video game enlightenment.

  • The Overmatt says:

Arkham Asylum. Fucking genius where it wasn’t expected.

  • SourDeez says:

Modern Warfare 2 is pretty much the fucking shit this year. I’ve also really enjoyed the latest Madden.

  • matty k says:

somebody call Lord Gold from Horse the Band about that dudes ebay posting.

  • Hibernum says:

He’s got the intellivision? Winner! That collection is both sweet and troglodyte. Atari 2600 too. Man you guys should go smoke a bowl with this guy and play asteroids!

  • Dan says:

Uncharted 2 hands down. Played through it three times and spent WAY too much time playing it online, I can’t get enough of it.

Can’t be fucked with Modern Warfare 2, it’s grossly over rated. I can’t stand it’s drab olive colour palette and “die in the space of a second” bollocks.

Brutal Legend only had one thing going for it: the soundtrack. The sound effects sounded like ass, the graphics were weak and it was only about 6 hours long.

Playing through Dragon Age Origins at the moment, currently in love with it after only a few hours.

Arkham Asylum was shockingly good for a Batman game, still can’t get over how good it turned out to be.

But Uncharted 2 decimates the opposition on every level; story, characters, environments, controls, gameplay, character animations, the set-pieces, every second of the single player campaign and then the epic multiplayer that’s constantly supported with double money weekends and more DLC to come. Nothing this year comes close to Uncharted 2. Hell, not just this year but anything on the PS3 to date.

    • BEHEMOHAWK says:

Until God of War 3, yes?

Also, has anyone played Demon Souls? Looks amazing.

      • Dan says:

Nah man I’ve never really cared for God of War to be honest. I mean Dante’s Inferno is clearly a God of War clone, but the Dante’s Inferno demo was SO much better than the God of War demo. Plus you get to kill Death and take his scythe, then chop him in half with it, that’s too cool to turn down! But my big game of next year’s definitely FF13, I’ve been waiting for that bastard for years. I’ll get so wrapped up in it for so long that I forget how to play guitar or some shit, but the inner nerd desire is too strong. >_>

I would’ve played Demon’s Souls…If they’d only released it in the UK xD I’ll import it at some time, it looks pretty damn good.

      • Grymmbear says:

        FINALLY! Someone mentions Demon’s Souls!

BRUTALLY TOUGH ARPG, but definitely rewarding once you start advancing in the game.

        My pick for GOTY.

  • BEHEMOHAWK says:

Dragon Age = Game of the Year

Overlord 2, Borderlands, Arma 2, and Assassin’s Creed 2 deserve an honorable mention.

  • meow says:

Top 5 games this year in order:
    1. Demons Souls
    2. Arkham Asylum
    3. Uncharted 2
    4. AC 2
    5. Dragon Age Origins

    This is facts.

  • Ben says:

Im gonna throw one out that probably none of you have played. Demon’s Souls. Such a great RPG, edging out Dragon Age by just a bit. Oh, and it’s the hardest game you’ll ever play in your life.

  • Kevin says:

    Uncharted 2 gives me boners…

  • Justin Sane says:

uncharted was cool, but short at once you play it, the fun exploring is over.

    batman was awesome

call of duty and left for dead are just fine, but seem stale

dragon age is good, but not everyone’s cup of tea

assassins creed 2 is bad ass!!!! i didnt really dig the first one, rented it, played a bit and it was too repetitive. this one is nicely polished, fun exploring, lots to do… this is my game of the year.

    • Dan says:

Uncharted 2 was short (longer than Brutal Legend and MW2 though) but with all of the treasures to find and the trophies to get – and with that reasnable length it was easy to replay over and over.

I was in the same boat as you, I HAAAATED Assassin’s Creed 1. I spent 45 quid on it based on all the hype and it was fucking awful. The first hour was great but the other 9 were identical to the first one, I’ve never regretted a purchase more in my life. >_> So I’m refusing to buy the second one. I might rent it cuz everyone’s saying how they’ve improved it, but there’s no way I’m paying good money for it.

Hope everyone had a great christmas, I’m gunna stop nerding it up and replying about games at 2 in the morning for no other reason than being too lazy to go to bed.

  • Marc says:

Holy fucking shit, that collection is insane! Might as well sell it to a video game museum seeing as it would be the entire chronological history of home consoles. As far as game of the year goes, Civilization: Revolutions would be my pick with an honorable mention to Darkest of Days. But my big question is???? When is the next Elder Scrolls game coming out?!?!?!

  • Slice two says:

Uncharted 2 is one of the best games ever.

  • Emil says:

Uncharted 2 is without a doubt my game of the year. Then followed by Batman and Killzone 2.

  • Ty says:

Borderlands, Arkham Asylum, and Dragon Age take my top games this year. I cannot wait for Mass Effect 2 to come out, it will be spectacular. Modern Warfare 2 is nothing special; don’t get me wrong, it’s still fun, but they just use the same engine they’ve been using for the last three CoDs, improved hardly anything, and totally accommodated the multiplayer for cheap, hiding pussies.

  • Joey says:

For me, it’s definitely Batman: Arkham Asylum and Modern Warfare 2. Period.

  • Modern Warfare was sweet, but if I have to go by pure playing time, Skate 2 is the winner. Borderlands and Assassin’s Creed 2 are great also.

  • Adam says:

    Modern Warfare 2
    Arkham Asylum
    Borderlands
    Shadow Complex
    Infamous

I just got Assassin’s Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 for xmas. I stilll need to finish Assassin’s Creed and pick up both Uncharted games! 2010 is going to be quite the gaming year!

  • Kye says:

    Blazblue: Calamity Trigger

    And fuck Call of Duty

  • anselmowitz says:

Anno 1404, best game ever. If u have to ask you cant afford it honey. MW2 was shithouse.

  • Corey borger says:

Umm Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 maybe? It was only the most anticipated game of the year and broke a shit ton of records in the process. I’m not a casual gamer either. I play video games everyday. I’m in a clan that was ranked number 2 in the nation on MLG for Turok. I don’t fuck around. Haha. So I know what a good game is. The only game that comes close to shitting on mw2′s parade is Uncharted 2. I do not own a PS3 so its sad to say I have never played it. Shit the PS3 is the only console I haven’t owned. I’ve only seen videos and read reviews. MW2 was so epic and mind blowing. The only complaint I have is that the online maps are very camper friendly. My complaint for Uncharted 2? Its on the PS3.

  • jerk off says:

“I’m not a casual gamer either. I play video games everyday. I’m in a clan that was ranked number 2 in the nation on MLG for Turok.”

Holy shit I haven’t laughed so hard in years. Thanks bro.

Also, MW2 is shit. You are 14 years old or a neckbearded man child if you think otherwise.

THE TERRORISTS ARE ATTACKING THE U.S. QUICK! DEFEND THE FAST FOOD JOINT. DERP A DERP.

  • What, no respect for Street Fighter 4? that makes me a sad panda.

  • Mark Gavin says:

Arkham Asylum is definitely game of the year. Closely followed by Modern Warfare 2.

I’m having fun with the new Zelda game for DS, too.

  • Guitar Hero Metallica and Street Fighter 4!!! cant forget about New Super Mario Bros Wii either! but yeah MW2 and Uncharted 2 def take the cake

  • John Peters says:

A great year in games. I don’t think I can pick a favorite though. Uncharted 2 is up there, but I expected it to be amazing. Assassins Creed 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum caught me both by surprise; I thought both were going to be terrible based on previous games with those licenses.

I really want to pick Brutal Legend since I technically had the most fun with it, but its an extremely flawed game. Amazing concept, poor execution. The single player campaign was way too short and all of the side missions were exact carbon copies of each other. Not even with different characters each time. Same characters and even the same fucking dialogue. Did not see that coming being a Tim Schafer game since he is known for his creative dialogue. That said, I had tons of fun playing the RTS missions. Brutal Legend 2 (if it gets made) will be insane if they fix these problems.

I’m sure theres tons I’m forgetting

  • DRONE says:

    FALLOUT 3 GOTY + MODS = WIN

  • Troy Rickard says:

Dragon Age: Origins. Instantly one of the best games ever made in my opinion.
    Machinarium was also brilliant.
Lots of games here I’ve never even heard of.

  • Sin and Death says:

    Tekken 6

  • Demon Souls GOTY ( Gamespot actually recognized it as such which amazed the crap out of me).

    Runners up:
    Forza 3
    Uncharted 2
    Dragon Age
    Moder Warfare 2
    Killzone 2
    Street Fighter 4
    Fallout 3

If you are talking about most hype or sales that would be Modern Warfare 2. Awesome game too by any
means but still not as good as Demon’s Souls IMO.

  • I like metal too much to buy puny video games.

    • Dysenteric says:

I’m of the same mind, except replace “puny” with “overrated”.

For the record, I have better words to use than “overrated”, but I’m not going to tempt an argument over something I stopped caring about a couple of years ago.

  • Demon Souls, yeah right. No pause button, no check point system, no difficulty setting, spotty dodge system and shitty targeting system. Just because a game is hard doesn’t make it good. I will say that it looks amazing. But all the best looks in the world won’t save that game from those flaws.

Dragon Age….Bioware dropped the ball on this game. When I hit the attack button, it shouldn’t lag for 2 seconds before doing what I told the character to do. Lame. Mass Effect was awesome, Dragon Age…..not so much.

Uncharted 2…this will probably win, although it is a bit overrated. Co-op campaign would have been a nice edition. Still looks better than any game out there and the story is strong, sometimes silly, but entertaining nonetheless.

Modern Warfare 2….the campaign was short, but the game was still great, still joins the rank of overrated.

Killzone 2….one of the best games I’ve played. Awesome, period. This game will not win because of two reasons…[1] there is no co-cop campaign and [2] there is no party system in multiplayer, which makes it a real pain in the ass to play with your friends in a public match.

Infamous…..overrated. The graphic novel style cut scenes are really cool and the story is strong. Gameplay is good, but lightning powers gets old.

Prototype….way better than infamous in gameplay. Difficulty spike ruined it at the end and graphics aren’t nearly as good looking as infamous.

Resident Evil 5….fucking loved every minute of it. This is my personal tastes. It will not win simply because of the lack of move and shoot controls. Capcom not including multiplayer with the game, instead adding it for a $5 extra DLC charge. And I’ve heard some complaints about the Sheva AI, but I never had any trouble with it. The reward system in this game is unmatched. It will not win.

Assassin’s Creed 2….I haven’t played this yet. I loved AC1. From what I’ve read, this might have a chance to contend with MW2 and U2. Good luck.

Halo 3: ODST….it was good, but the open world feel of the game was kind of lame. Halo is more of a linear game. Trying to disguise it’s linearity with a central hub city doesn’t do much for me. Firefight was a nice edition and including all the DLC maps for Halo 3 was also cool. Just isn’t strong enough of a contender for MW2 and U2.

Shadow Complex…..really really really cool game. It won’t win though because it’s XBLA.

Flower…..another really really really cool game. It also will not win because it’s PSN.

  • Some Random Dude says:

I spent the whole year getting stoned and playing fallout 3 til borderlands came out but all it does is crash on my comp.

  • Dubs says:

    MW2 is overrated but fun

    Borderlands= teh shit

AC2= teh shit until you beat it

L4D2= better than the first and MW2

haven’t tried Uncharted 2 but from seeing gameplay footage and hearing all the reviews it’s gotta be GOTY.

Next year will be the shit with Bioshock 2 and (hopefully) Dead Space 2.

  • “Demon Souls, yeah right. No pause button, no check point system, no difficulty setting, spotty dodge system and shitty targeting system. Just because a game is hard doesn’t make it good. I will say that it looks amazing. But all the best looks in the world won’t save that game from those flaws.”

You can’t pause a game that is essentially a real-time megaverse with alternate realities constantly in sync. That’s not a flaw and really I never found it to be a problem at all.

Technically Demon’s Souls has level structure that DOES count as a checkpoint system but it is innovative
enough to do it in a more creative way then simply the standard “checkpoint reached”. Once you have advanced far enough there is allways a point where you unlock a path that bypasses the area you just traversed so if you die you can go right back to that spot. But really, a difficulty setting? It can get harder
with newgame + and honestly I would not want the option to make it easier. That cheapens the experience when you know a simple tweak in the menu erases all the tribulations you go through. Demon’s Souls, unlike most other games I have played….period… give a true sense of gratification with the death of a boss. Personally I think everything you didn’t like about the game would take away from that if addressed in the manner you would like.

The game is absurdly hard but entertains you at every turn. So you die and lose your body( ie the ability to
plow through a level with two companions) well now its time to be a sidekick or maybe invade someone elses world ( a big wager since you can lose a soul level if you fail)…or maybe you’ll get summoned by
the archdemon of level 4 and actually be the boss of that level.

The dodging in the game is completely flawless and several critics have said the same

In fact all the things you listed as faults reinforced something I greatly liked about the game…The consequences for dying are REAL…which adds considerably to the immersion. REAL incentives, REAL
penalties…Challenge that is fair…It isn’t just automatically going to the “You Died” screen. When it happens, it’s you’re fault and you know it but it still happens quite a bit. This game says, slow down, smell the roses
be tactical, and realize one wrong step and you are dead. The great environments make it feel justified to be plodding slowly, yet surely along.

Amazing level design the likes of which I have not seen in a LONG time and I’m not JUSt talking about the aesthetics. World tendency. Deep stats…precise well animated combat, cool spell/miracle system, loads of classes and play styles. The multiplayers is incredibly innovative and fun from the standard PVP, the co-op and the chance to be a levels boss.

Speaking of the immersion lent by the consequence of dying….this was where I felt Bioshock fell flat on
it’s face. For a game that leaned so heavily on immersion it took ALL the tension of the gameplay away
with those stupid vita-chambers. No matter what happens you can just keep popping out of those things add infinitum. Weak. When dying does not matter you are now only about half as engaged.

I don’t get your taste. You hated pretty much everything this year but RE5 and that game was a standard
by the numbers action game. That’s not a bad thing but how is that elevated so highly above everything else? It delivered a shallow action experience for about eight hours and then bored me so I traded it. Plus
charging for a multiplayer that was not even that good? Forget it. Demon’s Souls went out on a limb
in terms of distancing themselves from conventions and the result was a uniquely awesome, riveting, gratifying, challenging immersive experience I want to play again and again.

  • “Shadow Complex…..really really really cool game. It won’t win though because it’s XBLA.

Flower…..another really really really cool game. It also will not win because it’s PSN.

Also these games are not losing because they are arcade games….GTFO they are losing because their
are countless better options for the title. I have Flower and as interesting as it was, it was more of a novelty then a game. You’re crazy if you think the this would have been a GOTY contender for any reason at all.

  • Lord Bling says:

I’m late to the party with this, but here’s my top ten video game list I posted over the holiday break.

    http://ryantheangrymidget.blogspot.com/2009/12/lord-blings-top-10-favorite-video-games.html

If it’s ‘tl;dr’, I’ll just say that MW2 was my #1, because I’ll still be playing the multiplayer at this time next year. Uncharted 2 was my #2, and Borderlands was my #3.
