THE CHARIOT MAKE GREAT MUSIC, PICK GOD-AWFUL OPENERS FOR TOUR

Well, it’s 2010 and The Chariot are through playing second fiddle. After spending a significant chunk of last year on the proverbial road opening for bands like Norma Jean and Evergreen Terrace, Josh Scogin’s band of metalcore brothers will finally–and rightfully–venture out on a lengthy American headlining tour of their very own later this month. Unfortunately, said tour will feature some of the blandest, most generic opening acts that heavy music has to offer today.

Wars And Rumors Of Wars, the band’s latest for Solid State Records, earned a (dis)honorable mention on my personal Best Albums of 2009 write-up for its frenetic blasts of meaty metal riffs, throttled drums, and uncompromisingly fierce albeit throaty yelps. Given the progressive, inventive sound of that record, I can’t say I’m all that thrilled with the choice of laughably-bad-to-tolerably-mediocre openers for the Tours And Rumors Of Tours dates. Labelmates Inhale Exhale make passable metalcore with clean emo vocals adorning their kid-friendly choruses, but I can certainly do without cringeworthy screamo carbon copies Greeley Estates, Memphis May Fire, and The Color Morale. Do all of these dreadful bands have the same management company or something? Look. I know I’m not exactly part of the core demographic for this type of music, and yes, I’m a grumpy old bastard who largely shuns what the kids listen to today on principle, but let’s face it: these opening bands fucking suck. Ugh, if not for The Chariot, these gigs would be a complete waste of resources. Evidently, this tour’s youth-baiting lineup is one for the metalcore scenesters, and if you’re like me, you’d do best to show up late. Real late.

So why show up at all? Well, I caught The Chariot’s energetic opening set last month at New York’s Gramercy Theater, and I was thoroughly impressed by both their fiery performance as well as the boisterous crowd response. More people should be listening to this band, even those who recoil at the very mention of “Christian metalcore.” This is the band’s strongest lineup yet, and provided that Scogin doesn’t dismantle The Chariot as he’s done at least twice before (by my count), their next album could be extraordinary.

inhale exhale is pretty sweet. dunno about the others though.

  • Chainsaw Majini says:

I like inhale/exhale. And i totally dig The Color Morale.

  • John says:

The first time I saw the chariot they were awesome, the next several times they didn’t even play anything

  • Andy Synn says:

I saw them on a tiny tour of the UK with Becoming The Archetype years ago. I didn’t like them. They’re not a bad band, I just don’t like them.

I’m assuming the support issue is, as stated, a management or label deal? Poor The Chariot.

  • Jon L. says:

Saw them open for Dillinger… sick.

  • mrak says:

    GREELEY ESTATES IS FUCKING AWFUL.

  • orbital says:

lol, that bass player fucking means it when he plays. That has to be the single most hated thing with that whole christiancore/metalcore scene. The over selling of playing your instrument.

  • Matt says:

Josh Scogin said it best when he called themselves “Heavy Punk”, that’s basically what it is.

  • Dimebag6isc6 says:

well idk if you actually listened to Memphis May Fire, but they’re actually pretty tight. Got some really cool riffs. I’m probably gonna get flamed for liking metalcore but whatever fuck off. This song has some really catchy fucking riffs on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8EnftNRqUY

Those bands are good except for greenly estates their god awful!

  • Sambo says:

I love all those bands. But I would go to see Inhale Exhale the most. Their new album is quite entertaining in my honest opinion. Just heard Greeley Estates and I don’t think they’re that bad. But at least it’s not Abandon All Ships haha. Memphis May Fire reminds me of a metalcore version of Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, which isn’t like I’m trashing on Maylene because Maylene is one of my favorite bands to date, but MMF isn’t all that good either. And The Color Morale is good stuff. Heard their whole album on Myspace today and it wasn’t all that bad. I liked it. So this tour could be one interesting tour to say the least. If only they came to Vegas and I don’t see why they need a 3-day gay from Tempe to Victorville. I mean they can easily throw in a Vegas show.

  • how is memphis may fire a “cringeworthy screamo carbon” copy?

did u even listen to them?

    color morale’s pretty sick too

  • Will Morley says:

I saw The Chariot play in the UK last year and they were awful. They were a true example of volume over talent, and were more concerned with pulling stupid shapes while playing for the stupid emo dude they had on tour with them to take pictures for their myspace.

  • The Color Morale killed it a couple months back when we saw them… live bass drops, heavy breakdowns, autotune. what more could you ask for?

  • Andrew says:

Would love to see this band but can’t justify watching all the horrible opening bands for the show, even at the Magic Stick.

  • LinZi says:

Keep up the good work! Look forward to reading more from you in the future. I think it will be also nice if you add “send to email” tool so people can forward the articles to their friends easily.
