AXL ROSE SOUNDS SLIGHTLY BETTER THAN DJ ASHBA

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 at 9:00am by

As one of the only people in the English-speaking world who will admit to enjoying Chinese Democracy, I was excited for nu-GN’R to get out on the road and finally start playing all the new shit.

But between the Dj Ashba incident and now this… Jesus Christ.

You thought that MTV performance sucked?

Go ahead. Just do it.

Two words:

Fucking. Disgraceful.

Three more words:

WHY THE DANCING LADY?!?

More of Axl Rose making Vince Neil look good after the jump.

On this song, Axl is so far out of sync with the rest of the band that I have no choice but conclude that he’s doped up on painkillers or something.

Any guesses as to why Dizzy Reed is dressed like a waiter?

Funny thing is, as long as Rose and Ashba don’t have too much to do, the band actually sounds okay to me.

Then again, maybe not:

5 videos about Gnr?? That’s too much to handle…

  • SouthFL Infidel

I can’t see the videos here at work, but I will gladly join you as the secong guy in the English-speaking world who thinks Chinese Democracy is a very, very good album. It didn’t leave my cd-changer for several months.

    • KilledByDeath

It’s awesome indeed. It’s just different to what was before and people tend to make a mistake of direct comparison to use you illusion albums.

i like it. i’ve always said it was a solid album. don’t understand the herd mentality to hate on particular records. “st. anger” was another one. sure it wasn’t the greatest album i’ve ever heard, but it still blows away anything that nickelback, five finger death punch, theory of a deadman, hinder, or disturbed have ever or will ever put out.

      • Jugglemonkey

To be absolutely fair, blowing those bands out of the water is about as difficult as farting into a mic.

      • Jugglemonkey

Now that I think about it, he’s still a damn sight better than ozzy. Firstly, he’s still hitting SOME of the notes, and secondly, the album wasn’t complete and utter bollocks, it was actually surprisingly good, so he still has that at least.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rik-Powell/286400508 Rik Powell

It really doesn’t. I hate Nickelback but they’re nowhere near as bad as St Anger. That album’s barely even music.

  • Fufkin

This I Love at 2 minutes is hilarious but on the whole, not bad by Axl’s live standards these days. He makes things very, very hard for himself on that record.

    • Fufkin

Actually Scraped is an absolute mess.

    • KilledByDeath

      True as well.

  • SHOCKTROOP

at first I misread and thought the youtube video said Axl was covering this love . I almost came in my pants for a second.

  • DICKHOLE

horrid why is it that someone shot john lennon (great musician) but no one will shoot axl he is digusting, and should throw the towel in!!

    • pigchop

Good choice of name there buddy.

    • SHOCKTROOP

ripping off bill hicks jokes? or ripping off denis leary who ripped off bill hicks joke?

  • Kuranes

As long as he’s hiring random people to be in his band maybe he can hire me to be the singer. I could probably sing as well as that. But I agree with Fufkin – the vocals on Chinese Democracy are pretty amazing. And give the guy a break – it’s hard to have complete diaphragm control with a big paunch like that.

    • DICKHOLE

no way hes supposed to be a pro….. your not going to say that about some random unknown band!!!!!! if its that hard for him to sing either hire a new singer or write easier songs!!!!

      • stu1

The vocals on that record about probably 10-15 tracks on each song. There’s no way to duplicate them live without MASSIVE effects, if at all. When you record an album, the last thing you should be worried about is how to pull them off live.

  • DICKHOLE

on the second video you have on this page it shows a glimpse of the teleprompter…… axle rose is so fuck that he has to read his lyrics and not remember them, fuck that!!!!!

    • KilledByDeath

If you check the use your Illusion dvds there is also a teleprompter. The thing is that levels of excitement are pretty high and singer’s gotta control his voice and usually that takes a lot of mindwork, so nothing to laugh at imo.

    • stu1

Find me an arena act that doesn’t use teleprompters.

Stop trying to fucking troll GnR for the sake of trolling.

  • The Ogre

Thats four more words not three

  • ChampChampagne

There is no excuse for Chinese Democracy as this has been performed since 2001, but I will give Axl the benefit of the doubt as this show is the 2nd or 3rd time the other Chinese Dem tunes have been performed live. I have seen numerous vids from the Asian shows and Axl and Company sound great 95% of the time. I am not an Axl apologist, but for a 49 year old man he still has the pipes, especially on the Appetite tunes.

  • bigb177

Axl may be a douche, but he is 500 times better live than Vince Neil ( I know thats not saying much) and for a 50 year old dude, with a coverband the live show kicks ass. I have seen many live bands over the years and they tend to screw things up live or botch a solo here or there. At least Axl tends to give it his all and at least sounds like Axl.

  • pigchop

I understand the monetary concerns behind the continued use of the GN’R name, but really – this dude really should have taken up with the thought: ‘should I use it’. Chinese Democracy contained some good stuff, but Guns N’ Roses it ain’t.

  • William Grimmkvlt

More likely he’s on antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills than painkillers. Who knows what his handlers are pumping into him to get him to tour or how much of it.

  • pigchop

Some guy on bmouth posted an all-too common thought – “The last album from this band that was released was called “Chinese Democracy,” not by “Axl Rose,” but by Guns N’ Roses.”

Of course that move (on the part of Axl Rose) was a mistake and, one easily rectified:

Saw the This I Love clip yesterday and it sounds to me like Axl is out of breath when the song begins. You can hear his heavy breathing in between the opening verse and of course there’s no way to pull off that chorus if you’re struggling to even breathe. Don’t know what song they played before that one but he should’ve had somebody do a solo or something so he could catch his breath before trying to sing that one.

  • Dave

And yeah, DJ Ashba is a complete disaster. Slash has to be laughing his ass off somewhere.

  • Sammy

Why do all these GNR videos look like Axl Rose w/backup band shows? Oh, I think I answered my own question.

  • Peter

On the old stuff he’s fine, and he’s pretty damn good at the old stuff. There’s a fucking amazing one of Nightrain somewhere from this tour. He’s struggling most on stuff that hasn’t been done live untill this tour and that stuff is also the hardest stufff vocally on the album. He’ll hopefully get better with time. I’ll admit he’s a pro and he should have been prepared but he rarely did rehearsals in the past with the old band and it’s the same now, so none of this is surprising. There was also many many shows in the old days where his voice was a whole lot worse than this and he was out of time to hell. All happens because he doesn’t rehearse or do soundchecks but it’s been that way for a long time so seeing poor performances shouldn’t be surprising. It shouldn’t happen but there’s no point making a fuss about it, Axl been incredibly good on one song and piss poor for the next is par for the course at this point.

And he’s still better than Vince Neil.
