JUMPING DARKNESS PARADE: OOOOOHHHHH SHIT, WHO KNEW?

I guess that by now it’s old news that the drummer from AX7 is taking the celestial dirt nap for undisclosed “natural causes,” but I just realized that something is bugging me about this whole situation.

First of all, let’s establish something. I am NOT a fan of AX7. Never was, most likely never will be. I think that they’re killer musicians, especially their lead guitarist with the silly stage name, but that doesn’t make me a fan.

I’m not going to specualte as to why a 28 year old suddenly died because I know full well it was probably drugs, but I also know full well that not everyone actually lives out their image in real life. He could have had an un-diagnosed heart condition, or any other number of things that suddenly kill people of any age. So I’m not going to really sit around and guess what did him in, and honestly, I don’t really care.

Here’s what I do care about for some reason: the metal community once again showed me that with some exception, it’s just a lonely, dorky, socially inadequate boy’s club. I know that I’m going to get some hate for this, but whatever. Hear me out.

Let’s all be real for a sec here. AX7 do not have the power of government where they can bust into your house with automatic weapons and kill you or drag you to an undisclosed prison with no trial after naming you an enemy combatant. Actually, no band that I know of really has that power. I mean, some carry guns, but they’re not coming to your house. And if they did, you could invoke the power of government on their asses by dialing 911. They really don’t care about you. These bands are not making you listen to their music. Nobody is making you listen to their music.

If you don’t like a band, or if you hate a band, then why waste your short life listening to them? There’s an over-abundance of bands out there. No shortage. Don’t waste your time.

And furthermore, just because you don’t like a band, do you seriously want their members to die? Is it that important to you? Are you that butt hurt that some dudes you’ve never met and most likely will never meet became successful playing music you don’t like? Is it worth wishing them death just ’cause you don’t like the chords they strum or the beats they play or their hairstyle? GROW THE FUCK UP PEOPLE!

Comments I’ve read on different sites are funny, of course. I have a very black sense of humor, but the more and more I read said comments and saw friends of mine’s Facebook status updates regarding Rev’s death, well… they just got me thinking. I realized once again that people take this shit WAAAAYYYYY too seriously. Comments like “Pt should’ve been the singer, I hate his voice,” “Glad he died, hopefully the band breaks up now,” etc… there’s some humor to it, yeah, but when literally hundreds of people are saying it, then it goes from funny to just kind of pathetic.

Get a fucking life. Nobody is forcing you to listen. Nobody is holding a gun to your head. It’s just music. There’s real reasons to hate people out there, like, um, maybe trying to blow up a jetliner coming in for landing in Detroit. But playing music you don’t like? Please. Touring has taught me that just because a band plays shitty music, that the people in it are not necessarily shitty. Hell, you may even make friends with them.

How many of you are into sports? You know the cliché about enemies on the court or field, friends off of it? Try to apply that to music. You may hate their art, but to wish them death over it? Dudes and seven girls out there reading this, IT’S JUST METAL! You act like someone stole your Magic: The Gathering cards or broke your model train set sometimes.

-EL

Listen to Daath, don’t wish them death.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Mitchell/660352330 Corey Mitchell

    Well said, Eyal.

    • ZapBranigan

      Agreed, excellent post.

  • cougar party

    Couldn’t agree more. Nice piece.

  • thehatemachine

    I agree completely.

  • JJBeback

    Not my Magic cards!

    • cougar party

      yes, all of them.

  • msv81

You’re completely right, people take this shit way too seriously while also failing to recognize just how truly horrible it is to even SAY that you wish death upon someone you have never met just because you dislike/hate their music. It’s completely and utterly pathetic and it disgusts me.

Oh yeah? You’re glad he’s dead? How the fuck would you feel if I said, “Your mother just died of cancer? That’s fucking GREAT!” Yeah, I get it, this is the internet and we’re in a community where death is taken perhaps a bit more lightly, at least on the surface through lyrics and violent images and such, than in the “real world”, but there’s not one single excuse for so many people to say they’re happy about this dude’s (or anyone’s) death.

I despise AX7, just like I despise a fuckton of other bands out there. I would NEVER wish death upon them, their families, their loved ones, or their freakin’ pets. You’re right, Eyal, when you say a lot of people need to grow up. This site was pretty bad that day, Blabbermouth is the worst of all.

    • William Grimmkvlt

You mean those articulate bon vivants at blabbermouth.net made moronic remarks over someone’s death? Surely you jest, kind sir. I couldn’t imagine anyone over there would be so crude. They seem so classy and well-mannered.

I can’t believe I wrote all that with a straight face.

  • Phoenixdan

    I agree completely.

  • meat mincing machine

Bullshit, nobody’s going to steal my Magic The Gathering cards. I keep those in my gun safe. Because if you take those away from me you might as well just SHOOT ME AND GET IT OVER WITH

  • http://schenkeltown.blogspot.com SchenkelTown

…kind of funny that this was posted on Metalsucks, considering half the site is dedicated to talking shit about bands. Wasn’t there recently a post about how 2010 will suck because Limp Bizkit have a new album coming out? Isn’t there also a segment on this site called “Shit Stain On The Ass Of The Universe?” dedicated to bands the editors don’t like?

I agree with the posting completely, but find it hypocritical to be posted on here

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kasper-Maigaard/1027001938 Kasper Maigaard

But, you know, it’s okay to hate Limp Bizkit. It’s expected to hate Limp Bizkit. No one seriously LIKE Limp Bizkit do they?
I think Limp Bizkit are a blast. Their music is so fucking horrendous that it’s funny and everyone always sings along to Rollin’ or their MI2 theme-cover. I’d never ever spend money on a Limp Bizkit record but I’d totally see them live if I could.

      Shitty funny music ftw!

    • Frampler

Why on Earth should a site not publish posts from a number of different viewpoints? Eyal is essentially a columnist, so it can’t be hypocritical for the site to publish his views, clearly identifiable as such, even if they contradict or clash with the editorial approach taken by Axl, Vince et al.

    • matt

theres a difference between simply shitting on bands and being glad their members die.

      • Jugglemonkey

Took the words right out of my mouth. Not liking their music is NO reason to wish them dead, and to my knowledge Metalsucks never said that they wanted any of these band’s members dead, they just expressed distaste for their music, to put it delicately. This is kinda a central theme of the article SchenkelTown, you may wanna read it again.

    • Eyal Levi

Maybe the bands aren’t the only ones who suck in metal. I think this post was totally appropriate on metalsucks

      • iceman

completely appropriate. just because you can have a laugh at another bands expense doesn’t mean you can’t have a little respect when a man loses his life. He was in a band some people love and some people hate but at the end of the day he was just another dude who loved to beat the shit outta some skins. And it sucks that it had to end so soon for him

      • http://schenkeltown.blogspot.com SchenkelTown

        i definitely suck.

    • http://www.easttexasunderground.net DaylightReckoning

I don’t think anyone here has ever wished members of Attack Attack! or Limp Bizkit to die. This site just kinda bashes them based of their style and music, basically lampooning their artist output instead of the person themselves. Albeit, if you wish harm upon Fred Durst or Scott Stapp just because they are awful human beings, then that’s different. :P

    • Fufkin

Yes the irony of a ‘nobody is forcing you to listen’ argument being posted here of all places wasn’t lost on me either. Although I very much agree with the sentiment of course.

  • http://www.stuffyouwillhate.com/ Sergeant D

EXCELLENT POST my friend, and well said. It’s just fucking music, let’s have fun with it (and hopefully that includes laughing at ourselves and the things we like).

  • andy morales

    nice words!!

  • http://www.stuffyouwillhate.com/ Sergeant D

PS A7X are/were real fucking good and knew how to get the party started. Backed!

    • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/46e389eb8b79606050d3d447431ff6ac?s=80 Nate

Oh my fuck! Sarge! Way to go! A7X are awesome.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kasper-Maigaard/1027001938 Kasper Maigaard

The people this is directed at are sitting, right now, curling their toes and feeling shameful.
The rest of us: well said Eyal.

  • Kuranes

    It’s A7X, not AX7.

And this is not a hypocritical post – you can call bands shitstains and wish all kinds of commercial failure on the likes of Limp Dickzit without actually praying for their deaths.

    • trevorgerard

you’re right, this post isn’t hypocritical. The only hypocrites a are the people who comment on this video “well said” when their is a pretty high chance that they’re one of the 90% of the metalsucks community who do this shit.

  • Will

    Well said, I agree completely.

  • Discipleofthewatch

I’m one of the seven ladies here! And I don’t wish death on lame bands. I like one of Avenged Sevenfold’s cds, but I don’t remember what it’s called right now. (Not the newest one.) It’s too bad that their drummer died at such an early age.

I don’t even wish death on my most useless coworker, with whom I do not get along even slightly. I just wish she would go work somewhere else, away from me. And sometimes I want to tell her off, which I do.

  • http://www.myspace.com/warhorsethrash Brendan Seigel

NOBODY better touch my Magic: The Gathering cards!!!! I just found my holographic Karona False God!

  • Ziltoid

    Agreed. Nicely said.

  • Facebook User

    Excellent post

  • festernaecus

You’re right. Shitty music does not a shitty person make. But then again, this callousness we’re all discussing is what comes of celebrity. Give yourself a ridiculous stage name and image, get a haircut like a 1980′s anime character, market yourself aggressively to children, slap your band’s name and your pretty faces on every piece of shit plastic trinket you can think of, and what do you become? A cartoon. And of course nobody gives a shit when a cartoon dies.

Furthermore, I have a hard time believing any of the members of A7X had a problem with the fawning accolades heaped upon them by the slavering, slackjawed masses to whom they pandered. They weren’t crying about being idolized, about being treated like gods or heroes simply for being in a band. They weren’t crying about the money, the drugs, the sluts, the adulation. No, surely not; these were simply the just rewards of their labors. Well, sorry champs, but all that privilege has an inverse. If you’re going to accept the worship of strangers, you’re going to have to accept their condemnation too. That’s the fine print no one remembers to read when they turn themselves into ridiculous caricatures in the pursuit of fame.

To extend the logic, it only makes sense to rail against cruel remarks against dead rock stars if you’re equally prepared to rail against the empty-headed hero-worship of living rock stars. And sadly, empty-headed hero-worship has long been a staple in the world of metal fandom.

    Comments? Questions?

    • cyrollan

Question: why so many big words? This is metalsucks… the biggest word I know is, “SLAAAAAAAYEEEEEEEEEEER!!!!!!!!!”

    • Andy Synn

The thing is, drawing a parallel with my distatste for the over-payment of football players, its not an entirely terrible thing for the bands/stars themselves…

If people are willing to adore you and pay you a lot for something you love doing surely its logical to let them? I don’t particularly think very highly of most football players (borderline rapists I believe is one description, lol) but can’t really begrudge them the money if someone is going to be stupid enough to pay them to do something they obviously enjoy!

Also, why do they have to “accept” this condemnation? I’m sure the look and the names and all that were/are (they are still going, right?) quite a lot of fun. Lots of musicians have stage-personas, some more obvious than others of course. Why should these people, given the opportunity to enjoy themselves and make themselves into something “more” as it were, be expected simply to “accept” abuse from people for it? Surely their decision in this respect only effects you in either a positive (you appreciate it) or a neutral (it doesn’t affect you at all) manner? Where exactly does all this negativity come from, if not from jealousy?

And I am clearly the same as I often resent bands for what I perceive as undeserved success… yet even I have to realise that their success is not directly affecting me, I am not in any way being negatively affected by their success. Let them have it and enjoy it. Example… god I hate Bring Me The Horizon, but to be fair they have put the road hours in and I respect that. I still hate the music.

In fact, their success could be said to benefit me, as I look far more cool and kvlt by not liking them and finding more obscure bands to listen to. And I would say that the majority o my lsitening is probably the bigger “underground” bands anyway, so even these bands have their level of success and notoriety.

Your last paragraph however is true, we should rail against thoughtless acceptance of style over substance. It’s not entirely the same as people being bitter and negative towards bands when their time could be better spent finding and supporting other bands they do like, but the similarity is there in that educating people against blindly accepting that popularity = quality would allow them to branch out and support better music.

      I’m done, back to work.

    • Eyal Levi

You’re absolutely right, but that’s not what this post was about.

      • Andy Synn

Damn, I thought I was reasonably on topic still. My bad,

        Consider me suitably chastised.

Side point – “Bat Country” was just on tv… coincidence??? Well, yes…

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

THANK YOU! finally someone with some fucking sense

  • http://www.omimetal.wordpress.com The Greys

Eyal isn’t wrong … but I think he needs to go farther with his condemnation.

The problem is the general nastiness you find on the Web. Go to any message board or comments section and you’ll find people calling each other names and generally behaving like jackasses. Insults rule the day, and any difference in opinion is met with hostility by random trolls. Look at just about any comment secion on MetalSucks: The Web is rampant with rudeness and crass behavior from people who act like tough guys while hiding behind screen names.

Yeah, it’s sick to say, “man, I’m glad so-and-so is dead, cuz his band sucked.” But it’s not that far removed, really from flaming some poor guy – calling him/her “fucktard,” “moron” or whatever – on a message board because he likes a band you don’t like. It’s the same sentiment is the same.

    • Harold

Been that way since someone realized, I can say anything I want to get attention and no one can punch me in the face.

      This comment is pure genius…

I wonder if some fan ran on stage and shot him in the head, would there be hate for him on the internets.

Drug death = what an asshole for waisting their life
Natural causes = shit happens to good people
Murder = His a fallen god

Sorry to intervene here…but what category do you think you’ll fall into Harold…?

…and if it was a hot chick…your sadness will end in like…yep…it’s over.

Those three categories are far from accurate…plus you forgot Suicide ;)

As I mentioned down below…there is no glorious way of dying, that’s why most people are obsessed with longevity.

p.s. I wrote this with a JD & coke in hand…I’m relaxed…I hope that you are too. peace brother.

  • THE REV

    YO ITS A7X NOT AX7

    • Eyal Levi

HAHA – my spelling of their name shows you what a fan I’m not

      • DaathSucks

Cmon Eyal, your new album sounds like AX7! You totally ripped off the metalcore riffs. I heard your newer album the other day, and was like, who is this, Chimaira or something,??? then someone said “its Daath”. I laughed, then shat myself, sat down and went, “oh yeah its alright”

        Sounded pretty good though.

        • TonyT

          Your comment hurts my brain.

  • Jonathan

    Yay for common sense.

  • Eyal

Hey Andy Synn – my response was actually to festernaecus

  • http://www.ftsmetal.com James

Avenged Sevenfold has sold more in 1 week than Daath has in their entire career.

    …and they suck.

    • Spike

The Jonas Brothers have sold more purity rings than there is people that have heard of Avenged Sevenfold and theyre christians. I dont need to add that they suck do I? Im pretty sure youd have something to say if Eyal was topping the billboard, but he isnt.

  • Will

    Great Post, Eyal.

  • Ben

This is true, and I agree. You should not wish someone death for making crappy music. It might however, be alright if that said crappy music is causing the degeneration of the music industry, such as, this new lady gaga rip off, Ke$ha.

  • Isaac

I agree completely. I’m not above making fun of a band I don’t like, but when you revolve your musical life around hating all these (mostly) talented bands, you just come across as pathetic.

However, keep in mind that this is the internet, and the trolls don’t take themselves too seriously. If they were to wish death, it would either be tongue-in-cheek (most of the time, it is) or the guy’s an unimaginable dick.

  • ITTOA666

Really good article saying what intelligent people say all the time. Its so dumb how there is no respect for shown when a regular joe says the same thing and he gets insulted for having a smart opinion. That said, good post man.

  • Tanner

That was the Be all, End all of posts about whiny prick fans. Much respect Eyal

  • GunMetalGrey

I’ve been saying this shit for years! Thank you Eyal for being someone I can look up to because you are not only intelligent, but you encourage others to think. I’m not a big fan of theirs, but when I heard he died I felt really bad for his family and friends. Death is permanent people…once you truly die…you are dead forever.

My heart goes out to everyone close to him and his fans. Live life one day at a time and remember that you only have one life to live…live it wisely.

  • Bicro

It’s true, but some of us are just bitter, unfulfilled, aimless, pathetic people.

  • Kye

I think it’d be fun to go back to the post about Chester from Linkin Park breaking his arm and seeing how many people agreeing with Eyal now were happy to see him get hurt.

Or really, just any post on Attack Attack, Linkin Park, Burzum, Avenged Sevenfold or any of the other bands that seem to get a lot of shit around here.

    Point being…

Fuck it, you get the point.

  • dot

haha if you think people like that are bad, go read comments on gaming sites like ign. some of them sound so oppressed in real life.

    • Eyal Levi

Gaming sites? nah. Those don’t pertain to my life even a little bit. I can imagine that people on those are brutal. Probably very frustrated with their lives.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rob-Kurkjian/1238131077 Rob Kurkjian

Eyal I really do respect your opinion and agree with most of it except the part where you say we aren’t forced to listen. true we are not forced to listen but that doesn’t change the fact we have non stop exposure to this band. In the malls there are all the lil scenesters running around wearing there T shirts, on TV we have music videos. Even when I go to order my other metal Ts from websites what graces the front page but bands like A7X. I may not be forced to listen but I also should not have to go out of my way to not listen either.

On the other points though I do agree people saying Im glad hes dead is just horrible just based on the fact he is more than just a musician. He was a loved one, a son, husband, and friend so it is sad to see Jimmy Sullivan die just based on those grounds.

    • Eyal Levi

When you watch TV there are commercials, when you read magazines there are ads, when you listen to the radio there are commercials – advertising is a fact of life for ANY product. If you don’t want to be exposed to advertising you need to shut your self off from the modern world.

  • the benthic

well obviously you read all those comments on lambgoat haha. i think lambgoats purpose is just talk shit, you cant really take it seriously at all.

    • Eyal Levi

Actually I never read Lambgoat. I saw them here, I saw them on BBmouth, and I saw them on people’s Facebook pages.

I’ve always found it interesting that for metal musicians that have died, from this Rev guy to Dimebag, there are always people that come out of the woodwork to just trash that musician… except in one case; Chuck Schuldiner.

    Food for thought.

    • Beereded

Nope, seen people trash talk Chuck as well, saying they’re glad he’s dead etc.

  • bretton

on the subject of black humour…

I wish Lars had drawn the ace of spades in 1986

    • http://www.myspace.com/brutusegypt TIMUR

lard..I mean Iars is entertaining actually…I was just listening to the JimBreuer stories on MetalInjection…’focking napsack’

  • bretton

and also on Chuck Schuldiner, where are all of his tributes? how come dimebag gets them all and he doesn’t get any?

    • Biff Tannen

because Dimebag played shitty music, easily digested by hillbillies and suburban white boys with indentity problems. Chuck created challenging, thoughtful music which by default, is difficult for the braindead masses to grasp and appreciate.

  • Dysenteric

And how come Mieszko Talarczyk never got any tributes? Boxing Day a couple of weeks ago was the fifth anniversary of his tragic death, the only tribute to him was a lone Facebook group set up a few years ago.

I never expected anyone to write this piece, simply because the notion that wishing death on people who play music you don’t like is stupid is a total no-brainer.

  • Geekbeater

Dude Magic the Gathering is the shit. I was a nasty Magic player back in my hayday. I wouldnt want anyone to steal my Serra Angel!

i am not a big avenged sevenfold fan…not even Daath, but I appreciate the simple fact that such individuals put their hearts on the line by doing what they love…the naysayers are always those that actually can’t even do that…

Good post Eyal…from an Arab to a Jew…you hit the nail on the head [no pun intended]

Thank you for possessing common sesnse and calling out on the bullshit from the people who do not possess it.

  • Biff Tannen

The only thing this article got me thinking was “Why am I wasting my short life reading this garbage article?”

Its great to know that the PC metal community police is alive and functioning though! Where is your band playing next, Woodstock?

  • Corey S

You’re completely right. Actually, if you really want to see the pathetic hate out there… just watch a YouTube video (any YouTube video) of a band and you’ll find at least one blowhard loser trashing the band. The sad thing is that he took the time, not only to listen to music he didn’t like, but deliberately post a comment about how much he hates it knowing that the fans would burn him for it. I read once that metal fans were extremely picky and whoever wrote that is right… but, at the same time they can be really immature. If I have to hear one more guy simply dismiss a band with “it sucks”… with absolutely no beef to back it up, I’m going to go insane. Oh yeah, and the genre system we have (while helpful) can be just a ridiculous.

  • d00shc00gr

Well gosh, Eyal. I’m just so sorry that I snipped at A7X and a hundred other folks just happened to have similar ideas. I’ll try harder to think things nobody else in the 7-billion-population planet would think. :P

    • d00shc00gr

Seriously, a bunch of people poured haterade on A7X not because we’re pathetic or malicious or spiteful but because A WHOLE FUCKTON OF PEOPLE HATE A7X

      • Eyal Levi

i never said that I had a problem with people hating that band or openly saying it

  • Justin

hey eyal great post, people need to grow up but too bad metalheads nowadays are dickheads who don’t get laid

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aaron-Javis-Davis/732759369 Aaron Javis Davis

      agree

  • Sammy

Eyal, either you are completely correct in everything you say in this post, or you’re partially right, but forgetting an important component: the anonymity of the internet allows people to say things they don’t really mean, just to get a rise out of others or to be dicks on purpose.

  • terrybeans84

I’m glad some one finally called out all the idiot metal fans out there. Not saying every metal fan is an idiot, but the ones who run their fucking mouths over the internet. Go buy a box of tampax and get over yourself!

    • terrybeans84

Damn I just realized I’m running my mouth over the internet. I need to get over myself.

  • http://reaper-x.deviantart.com/ Reaper-X

I wasn’t huge with the hate. I was just like. “Band sucks, yeah, he died, but the band sucks. He was probably good, but the band sucks.” and something about hoping they break up.

and being glad he wasn’t shot in the face onstage. (or else we’d have a shitload of “The Rev Signature Snare’s & Kicks” flooding the market.)

I could see myself making friends with members of bands I didn’t like. It would have to be on the whole. “I don’t like your shit, but you arent full of shit and the music isn’t full of shit, it just isn’t my cup of tea.” type thing though. The rest though, I would just kind of ignore.

  • Xn0r

X2. If one doesn’t like a band, no use wasting energy on ‘em. And wishing death, or harm to anyone because of the music they play is just a small minded thing to do.

I typically take this sort of thing even further by basically speaking no ill of a band I dislike unless I’m asked my opinion about ‘em. I’ll rave about bands I like, but simply won’t speak about bands I dislike unless prompted. I guess I see it as kind of a karmic thing. I realize that a band is just a group of people trying to make a living doing what they love, and IMHO there’s no point in shitting all over that just to air one’s opinion.

Further, I think if one is an artist (I’m not BTW), talking shit about other bands is counterproductive, since you just make potential enemies of the band and their fans. I imagine it’d be pretty awkward if you publicly talked shit about a band, then wound up meeting members of that band on the road, or worse, winding up on a tour or festival with them. “Uh I didn’t mean it when I called you a bunch of no-talent hacks who couldn’t song-write their way out of a paper bag … errr..” lol (I doubt I’m saying anything Eyal doesn’t already know here. He seems like a smart guy.)

Also, about metal fans … well … I don’t think that sort of hateful behavior is exclusive to metal fans. I really think it’s more of a factor of the typical age of the typical metal fan (young). IMHO, kids that age do or say just about anything to get some sort of attention and/or respect, and fit in, etc. One way to do that is to trash a band, etc. And of course being hardcore and “metal” which sort of dovetails in with that behavior. :p

    k. Enough blather for now. :p

I know this blog post is a bit stale now… but here’s something I thought of.

Isn’t all the squabbling over which metal band is better like the squabbling over religion?

That’s right. I said it. Let it sink in.

The radical Islams wish death to anyone opposing them.

Radical metalheads wish death to anyone who likes a band they don’t like. And that’s only one example. There are dozens of others.

So, in an ironic way, a good half of us no better than any religious person, and in fact, are pretty much the exact same thing, just with a shifted context of hate.
