SAMO is connected with NYIA, which has one of the most talented drummers I have ever heard.
Szymon from NYIA produced all ANTIGAMA’s records (and was a session bass player, he produced also some records by Yattering, Vader, Vesania, Mord and the latest Riverside).

i agree with you. metal is strict, in the sense that live, the artists play the exact form of the songs from the album, more of less. Also, jazz has a certain swing to it that isnt present in metal, or most rock. Its in thirds, so it naturally brings about the shuffle feeling to it. Metal and rock is usually not in thirds….anyway, enough of my brainyness, its all good. I dont think there is “jazz metal” i think there are innovative artists and there are bands that are stagnant and copy something that already exists [skeleton witch,lazarus ad,etc]

Then again both types are composed, or ‘arranged’ as they say in jazz, I’ve been to some modern jazz concerts and there are very specific times for improvisation, during the lead instrument’s solo. I’ve seen live improvisation from tenor sax and vibraphone players before, it’s pretty awesome.

There are LOTS of the same group interactions too.

He does have a good point, but I’m just so damn fond of “jazz metal” I hardly want to call out their obvious differences

Oh, and it’s not as if I’m trying to “call you out” on the use of “jazz metal”. Just seems like we should come up with some other word. That’s all. Just two cents’ worth.

The term “jazz metal” comes up from time to time, and I usually like the type of metal being referred to. But I have to say, “jazz” probably isn’t the best choice. Jazz is hard to define, but most definitions I see include some aspect of improvisation and group interaction, creation of art during performance. Seems to me that metal is highly rehearsed and static. Awesome. But not at all improvisational. Just because something’s got a lot of changes, or sounds “complex” doesn’t make it “jazz like”.
