THE FIRST THING WORTH WATCHING ON FOX NEWS SINCE ODERUS: COBALT’S PHIL MCSORLEY ON RED EYE

Friday, January 8th, 2010 at 12:45pm by

Okay, so in case you somehow don’t know, Cobalt vocalist Phil McSorley’s day job is being a sergeant in the U.S. army, which automatically gives him +10,000,000 street cred points. Little wonder that the band’s latest album, Gin, received accolades up the ass – there’s no way in fuck you can accuse Cobalt of being tough guys poseurs.

So. Here’s McSorley on Fox News’ Red Eye. I have a really hard time watching Fox News because I’m a crazy liberal (or so your e-mails and comments keep telling me) and all the yelling and graphics give me a headache. But I managed to make it through this entire clip. The start is almost surreal as the hosts make incredibly awkward attempts to rock out before introducing McSorley, Greg Gutfeld seems a little too happy to learn about Gin‘s dark lyrical themes. But McSorley never comes across as anything other than articulate and intelligent. That’s the kind of image both metal and the army want to be sending out right now.

Gin is out now on Profound Lore.

this kind of screaming is what gives metal a bad rep. actually that’s not true, most non-metal people probably wouldn’t even try to distinguish between types of screaming (except in terms of sheer abrasiveness).

  • Dave C

    FuCk YeAh MeTaL RuLeS omG!!!!!!!!

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Thank You for the respect AXL, Vince, all at MS. He’s setting the right example for both Metal and the rest of us “Green- suiters”. Or should i say digital camo suiters…fuck I hate our uniforms…..

    Come together like Butt cheeks

    • Hammer_Smashed Joe

      Get to work

  • iolanach

Holy shit, never would have expected to see Cobalt on Red Eye. It’s a pretty cool show. Funny, and Jim Norton appears regularly. That alone should be reason never to miss it.

    • bittercold

i’ll cop to watching it regularly as well. usually dvr it and watch as i get ready for work in the am. should have done so this morning, as that clip would have made my day… still made my afternoon.

and seeing the guy on the panel bury his face in his palm was pretty funny.

  • Facebook User

    Cobalt is fucking rad

  • Honeynutzz

Everything he said went right over their heads.

    • Chainsaw Majini

      Hilarious.

  • SHOCKTROOP

the guy who hosts red eye is a definite metalhead.

    • Alkahest

Yeah. The interviewer looks like he knew a thing or two. If he wasn’t a metal head, he would not have said Cobalt wasn’t death metal

    • SonOF

I was curious about that guy Gutfield, myself. I never watch FOX or FOX News, so I know nothing of Red Eye…is that guy really a metalhead (it seems he definitely has some knowledge)? Does he discuss metal on the show at other times?

BTW, that Cobalt clip they played doesn’t help metal’s cause, it is an extremely noisy generic part with lots of screaming..I can some conservative prick watching that segment and commenting something along the lines of, “What is that bullshit noise? Who listens to that talentless garbage?” :/

      • http://toeleven.wordpress.com/ Jayson

It doesn’t matter. “Who listens to this talentless noise?” is something that’s been asked of stuff like Judas Priest and Alice Cooper, both of which seem about as brutal as the Beatles in 2010.

        • SonOF

I’m just saying that since I love metal, I approve of anything that shows metal for the artistic expression it is, and helps show people how creative as well as credible it is (to the uninformed masses). Unfortunately, the little Cobalt snippet they used did not do that. This is obviously a minor point, as it is unlikely someone is going to be turned on to metal (and accept it as a credible artform) from a 5 second snippet and 5 minute interview, but a guy can dream.

          • http://toeleven.wordpress.com/ Jayson

Fair enough, I can get behind that.

    • Dubs

I think that he was/is a huge hardcore punk fan. He does like GWAR and Cobalt, and hates the black eyed peas, so he’s got more “cred” than anyone on fox/cnn/msnbc.

    • iolanach

i don’t think gutfeld is a bit time metalhead, but he certainly likes some metal.

  • http://raiseyerfists.wordpress.com raiseyerfists

I’d been hoping for some video interviews with this guy, last place I expected to see it was on Fox News.

    • Corey S

I’m frankly not surprised. Mcsorley is in the military and he’s also a successful musician, or course an uber conservative news network is going to latch on to that. What’s awesome is his answer about patriotism. I love that he said that he doesn’t consider himself that patriotic (ironic because he’s willing to die for his country). What he was getting at is that he isn’t the kind of guy to push the fact that he’s a “proud American” in everyone’s faces. Also, he isn’t the kind of guy to pretend he can judge people as patriotic or not patriotic. He simply serves his country. That doesn’t make him morally superior to anyone. Never could get into this band, but I’m going to really try to appreciate them out of sheer respect for this guy. (My dad served in the military, if that proves relevant to anyone).

      • Shinaain

Stereotypes and common perceptions aside, I think you’ll find this is the case with many people who choose to serve in the military. Many are not mercenaries, nor uber-patriots, or political pundits. We simply serve.

You will find that members of the American armed forces are just as diverse as the nation we serve, to include our political views *and our tastes in music.*

  • Tanner

For once Metal was on the News and it wasn’t chastised or ridiculed for being bla bla bla. Cobalt is fucking great.

  • canea

The dude asking the questions was embarrassing. Phil McSorley seems like a cool, kind of shy person though. Hope he sells a few more albums from this…

  • Facebook User

    Cobalt FUCKING DESTROYS.

  • SonOF

BTW, I don’t know why the fact that he is in the military gives him more metal street cred. I like Cobalt, but I could care less if he bakes pies for a living; I don’t find it particularly interesting that he kills people to earn his paycheck. However, it is unusual to see such a creative type in the military, usually the armed forces successfully robs people of any creativity they may have (as that type of “gay shit” is obviously frowned upon), or creative types don’t join in the first place.

    • IAmTheClitCommander

Wow, this is the most ignorant comment I have seen in a while.

      • Dubs

        +1 (to clit commander)

      • SonOF

How so? Do you know lots of creative types that join the military (artists, musicians, dancers, thespians, etc)? And I am not talking about creative in military tactics or something. Thanks, I didn’t think so. Any creative person with half a brain knows that if they want to persue such artistic endeavors, the military isn’t the ideal environment. Yes, I am generalizing, but doing so based on rational thinking. It’s like saying there aren’t lots of obese people who adhere to a strict vegan diet. I’m generalizing based on common sense…

        • SonOF

…and if you were referring to the “gay shit” comment as the ignorant part, that was obviously an attempt at irony

          • beardy

“it is unusual to see such a creative type in the military, usually the armed forces successfully robs people of any creativity they may have ” I think it may have been that

          • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Were you or are you in the Military? Not trying to start anything but if youre not/havent been- how would you know that?

Thats a very vague and generalized statement. Ive been in for almost 10 years. Ive met folks whose creativity would scare you. Musically and otherwise :)

And the Military doesnt “rob” you of anything.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sean-Wright/1365416981 Sean Wright

But then coming from a highschool dropout hippie who sits around, smokes pot, and criticizes a lifestyle(the military) that he couldn’t possibly fathom or know of except what Rollins Stone magazine tells him. Probably couldnt even do a single push-up because lack of exercise over the years from eating to much greasy fast-good and too many nights drinking beer with his other idiot hesher friends.

Dude, in the future, instead of planning on saying anything against the U.S. military…..just go back to being a loser, or eating fast food. Have fun getting diabetes.

      • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

        Im fuckin fully behind that!

        Well said.

    • Shinaain

SonOf, out of respect for your other contributions to this site, I will take the time to express that I find this comment to be largely misinformed and generally just unfortunate. I sincerely wish that you would re-examine your views on this matter.

  • Shinaain

Manhattan, Kansas? Ft. Riley, huh? Sucks to be that guy. Wonder if he was in Korea at the same time as me, and where he was stationed?

Cobalt is a band I keep meaning to check out and this just convinced me to bump them a little higher up my priority list.

Watching that video makes me marvel at just how much military culture sticks with you, even once you’re no longer immersed in it. My first thought at the “Army Officer in Metal Band” YouTube video tagline (or whatever it said) was, “Someone call him ‘Sir’ and see what happens. Really, go ahead. It could be fun.” My next thought was, “Damn, his hair is long.” WTF?? I mean, really – when will it ever go away?

I can understand his relunctance to continue to encourage people to perceive his band as being “war” metal, or of allowing promotion of the band’s work to focus solely on his status as a military servicemember. I’m not privy to the guy’s politics, but speaking in general terms (okay, and for me) many people fail to appreciate that voluntary military service is not necessarily synonymous with political acquiescence.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sean-Wright/1365416981 Sean Wright

I was in the U.S. Army for a short time, and I can honestly say that the people who do not go in are usually the first the criticize it and start making out-of-date insults like “baby killers”, or “getting hired to kill people”. It’s also the same people that even if they tried they wouldn’t make it past the first week of training without begging to pop a few hunded Xanax or so because they are having extreme anxiety or too stressed-out and would flat-out quit because they don’t have a strong enough backbone or have such a weak mind to just keep on training.

Out of the entire circle of 20 or so people that I am good friends with, only my friend and I joined the military. He went in the Marines and I chose the Army, but that was around 2002-2003. The level of respect you get for just joining the military to serve your country is enough to prove that you were doing the right thing, even as crazy as enlist during a time of war. It’s 2010, my Marine buddy and I are the healthiest and most mentally sane individuals compared to the rest of our close circle of friends who are all either over-weight from taking psychiatric medication, alcoholism, drug abuse, eating bad food, not exercising, and smoking.

Point I’m trying to make is that you can criticize the military all you want, but when it comes down putting your money where your mouth is, I’m placing my money on the person who was in the military.

    Cat Fancy = maximum brutality.

  • Andy P

I think the cover of their album says it all loud enough. Hemingway was a soldier, and was quite obviously pretty creative.
