ASK DEVILDRIVER HOW THAT WORKED OUT FOR THEM

Back in 2007, DevilDriver attempted to get in the Guiness Book of World Records for creating the largest circle pit ever (see video above). Guiness ultimately shot them down on the basis that there was no way to measure a circle pit, which is ridiculous. Where a circle pit begins and ends is pretty clear to anyone looking at it. It seems to me that Guiness was pretty much just prejudiced against metal, which should surprise absolutely no one.

Which I why I think the aspiration of South Africa’s MotherFUDD Festival – the fest with the worst name of any one that’s not Gathering of the Juggalos – to get in Guiness for the most number of people simultaneously headbanging ever is already a lost cause. Maybe I’m just cynical, but I can easily see Guiness shooting MotherFUDD down on the basis of being unable to define “headbanging,” since there are so many different styles of headbanging (windmilling, Meshuggah-bobbing, etc.). Or maybe they’ll just come up with some bullshit excuse I can’t even anticipate. Point being, I’ll be pleasantly surprised if Guiness recognizes MotherFUDD’s claim.

MotherFUDD will take place from March 12 – 14 in at Malonjeni Guest Resort, South Africa. I haven’t heard of a single band on the bill, so someone let me know if any of these artists are worth checking out.

    I don’t know, I’m gonna have to side with Guiness on this one. I’m sure they have to be pretty exact with their measurements. You can’t just take the word of a bunch of dumb ass Devildriver fans saying “dude that was the sickest most biggest most circliest pit ever yo!” Hell I think my penis looks pretty big, but every girl I meet says otherwise. :/

    Anyway, the only band I know on that list is Agro but I heard just a few songs… I remember two of these sounded great tho…

    South Africa’s metal scene is excellent. Bands from other Southern African nations have also impressed me. As someone who visits the continent frequently I can reassure you that someday soon there will be a boom in metal coming from Africa. No Joke!! There are metal festivals in South Africa, a worthy one in Namibia and others in North Africa with some fantastic metal bands. And by the way, the best metal bar I have ever visited is in Cape Town. Brilliant city, and great scene. Trust me.

    motherfudd the gathering. Yes we set the guiness world record for the most people headbanging at the same time and it has been reconised by guiness. As for the guy who commented on the bands check out myspace and youtube you might be suprised at how good these bands are. Agro for example have even played at wakens open air festival in germany on the main stage. So give south african music a listen to.
