FORMER UNIMPORTANT BAND MEMBER THREATENS TO KILL CURRENT UNIMPORTANT BAND MEMBER

It’s 2009… even if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being a DJ in a rock/metal band long after it was considered cool (if it ever even was), you’ve pretty much been relegated to the role of the kid who was always picked last in schoolyard kickball games. They’ll try and find a role for you out of pity, but really no one gives a fuck. So here we are 10 years after Incubus’ sound has featured a DJ in any prominent way, and former DJ Gavin Koppell (aka DJ Lyfe) is threatening to kill current DJ Chris Kilmore.

Koppell was ousted in 1998 after the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. record, well before the band’s 2000 breakout Make Yourself (and by the way fuck you if you don’t think the latter is a great album). In court papers filed last week in L.A. County Superior Court, Kilmore says Koppel threatened to kill him last month over an incident that took place back in 2003. Kilmore secured a restraining order against Koppell in 2003 after the latter spit in his face. Court papers claim Koppell has been ordered to stay at least 100 yards from Kilmore and his girlfriend. Read the nitty gritty details and case history at Noisecreep.

This is like a fight between the dude who was picked last in kickball and the dude was picked second to last. It’s a battle not to be the worst. Incubus’ sound hasn’t utilized a DJ in years… whenever I hear new music from Incubus I wonder why they even keep the guy in the band, kind of like the way Lacuna Coil keeps Andrea Ferro around because… why? Also, new Incubus sucks; they pulled a Chili Peppers and went all Adult Contemporary in their [not even that]-old age.

I know this is a metal site, but… the first three Incubus albums are fucking terrific. There is no point in disagreeing with this simple truth

    • Hassman

      Make Yourself is horrible

      • Natalie

Nope, you are. Also, their music does include a ton of sampling, so the dude actually has more of a role in Make Yourself on up than the bassist(s) do.

        • hackman

Agreed. You’re horrible. SCIENCE and Make Yourself are just awesome records. Such a unique sound for a mainstream band it’s a shame they went and “pulled a Chili Peppers.” Couldn’t agree with that more.

      • IAmTheClitCommander

Previous posters are right; you’re horrible. Make Yourself was a great album.

Make Yourself is awesome but SCIENCE is better.

  • AATHD

I remember back in the day there was a real band called Incubus from New Orleans. Certainly not this stupid band.

  • o0Stacey0o

Its still 2009, eh? Well no shit….

    • Natalie

HAHA man you have a good eye.

    • nick

And he would have gotten away with it too…. if it weren’t for you meddling kids.

S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was the only decent album Incubus ever did, and it’s a shame they went so badly downhill afterward, because S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was fucking great. I can still listen to that album and rock the fuck out.

    Kilmore plays keyboard now..

    Not a fan, dont care

  • Redgrave9

Hey, Andrea is kind of important, he does the keyboard work in the band… But besides that, he’s pretty bad.

I get the impression he actually does a lot of the songwriting too. But yeah, his vocals suck.

  • Patrick

I love everything this band does. Kilmore is a cool dude, this is messed up.

agree with the whole article. ps. if your a science fan, and wanna another good incubus cd try ENJOYINCUBUS. its a six songer with more funk but still good.

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

I believe I have that one somewhere… it’s decent, although it never grew on me the way S.C.I.E.N.C.E. did.

A Crow Left of the Murder is, IMHO, a near perfect album. I love anything Incubus has done and I consider them to be one of the stepping stones for me to get into metal. That said, Chris Kilmore plays keyboards now, AND on Crow Left of the Murder, there’s DJing stuff.

So fuck you for calling him unimportant

    • Beereded

I did quite enjoy Talk Show On Mute and the video.

  • Beereded

What about Fungus Amongus? I love all their subsequent releases (lost interest after Make Yourself). But, Fungus Amongus was what turned me into an Incubus fan.

  • Fufkin

Well I have to say, Chris Kilmore is a very metal sounding name.

The NME once described Incubus as ‘sports metal.’

    What the very fuck?

Damn, that’s a bit harsh don’t cha’ think?

  • dot

maybe kilmore just watches porn back there.

  • rkuder

I love all incubus old and new…A Crow Left of the Murder is probably my favorite. Kilmore’s not unimportant he plays the keys on top of all the DJing and sampling that he does (/did) and is a big part of their live sound (they are nothing short of awesome live and he fills in a lot of very important gaps). Since you aren’t a fan of their new stuff you probably don’t care but there actually are a lot of layers of different keyboards as well as some interesting sampled sounds on most of it….that’s why they keep him in the band.

DJ Lyfe should just relax and enjoy his comfortable niche in complete musical irrelevance and obscurity that he’s has been stuck in since 1998.

    • rkuder

Btw, I don’t care how lame every metalhead on here will think I am for it, I think new Chili Peppers is the best RHCP. Some people think they’ve gotten too mellow….personally I think they just developed a lot more legitimate substance in their songwriting.

      • stu1

If he had the ability to write lyrics, I’d probably agree.

  • http://www.myspacw.com/1987music Gavin

wow! I never aspired to be a DJ in a heavy metal band.

It cracks me up that 13 years after having a little fun with a metal band, I still get huge royalty checks and some press here and there.

Chril Kilmore has no heart. Straight up. He should stop making up lies about me and learn to man up.

If you want to know the truth about this situation, search YouTube for “Gavin Koppel responds to chris kilmore”

    • Driven9

p.s. your a badass. fuck Kilmore

  • Gravy

Man Enjoy and Science were the peak albums for incubus and Lyfe was the first DJ in a band who was actually good. I stopped listening to Incubus after Science. Lyfe is the shit!
