heroicdosesOnce upon a time I was totally bowled over by this album…..instrumental groovin heavy-at-times artful guitar playin ROCK — what’s not to like?

Unfortunately the record mysteriously disappeared from my collection for quite a while, and from time to time over the years I have certainly felt the loss…….leave it to Mr. Wizard himself to recently re-introduce me to the sound I’ve been missing — thanks brah!!

HEROIC DOSES — “Crystals”

HEROIC DOSES — “Heroic Theme Song”

HEROIC DOSES — “The Mad Spackler”

(all from their self-titled album, 1998)

I quite like this… it vaguely reminds me of some of Biffy Clyro’s earlier stuff. Well, the kinda “jangly” guitar parts do, anyway…

Mr. Wizard? As in that old guy that used to have that show about doing science projects? Hopefully, i’m not the only one that remembers that show.

A phrase coined by none other than Bill Hicks.

Not necessarily, Bill Hicks was quoting someone else, can’t recall the guy’s name though… but this band name could very well be a deliberate Hicks reference.

    sick.

If you like this, Bill Dolan’s other band 5ive Style is pretty amusing.

They were even better live . . .

BTW, Billy Dolan has a new band, “Das Boton”. Just saw ‘em last week in Chicago, and they were freakin’ great.

Just in case Andrew Sterner happens across this page again, the Heroic Doses LP is still available on the Sub Pop website (www.subpop.com). It’s only $8. Also, if anyone is interested in Dolan’s incredible new band, I have the entire album (it’s called Soda Drip) up for streaming on a little offshoot of my blog that I made so I could introduce the band to a friend. It’s basically the same band as Heroic Doses. Bill Dolan, Ryan Rapsys, and what is likely to be an endlessly changing bassist, if history is any indicator. The sound differs in that it seems to nod to the old-school a little less subtly. I sort of feel like I’m listening to a Hendrix/Ventures supergroup when I listen to this record. The stream is here>>> http://crazyawesomes.blogspot.com/ if anyone wants to have a listen. OH, and Bill Dolan also has a new 7″ out on Sixgunlover records that features a couple of songs on acoustic guitar.

Thanks for posting this batch of joy. I saw them open for Hum at the Metro back in like, what, 1998? Amazing then, and the album still holds up now.

This Das Boton project is pretty good too.
