ALBUMS THAT WILL FUCK YOUR FACE OFF IN 2010: AFTER THE BURIAL, TBD

After the Burial
TBD
Label – Sumerian
Release date – TBD

If 2008 marked the dawn of Sumeriancore then 2009 was the year it exploded onto the scene with a vengeance, reaching America’s youth via the Internet in a palpable and visible real-life way. 2010, then, will be the year that the budding micro-genre will be put to the test; which bands will end of being trailblazers, legitimate contenders in the metal pantheon? and which bands are generic followers, destined to be lost in the bowels of 2nd and 3rd wave micro-genre has-beens spanning the decades?

If I were a betting man I’d place my money on the former category for After the Burial, the Minnesota group whose 2008 Sumerian Records debut Rareform helped escalate the Meshuggah-inspired sub-genre from scattered local scenes to the national stage. While Born of Osiris may out-mosh and out-breakdown them, while Periphery may out melody-them and while Tessaract or Animals as Leaders may out mind-fuck and out-play them, After the Burial strike the best balance in the humble opinion of these ears. After the Burial have plenty of crazy grooves, chops up the wazoo and plenty of hooks to latch your ears onto, but it’s their ability to combine them all in just the right way that makes them stand out from the Sumeriancore pack. And they are one of the most razor fucking tight live bands I saw in all of 2009… seriously, seriously impressive for such a young group of dudes.

Watch for After the Burial’s second Sumerian Records full-length (and third overall) to drop some time in 2010, presumably (hopefully)  by Summer.

New vocalist is boring but otherwise agreed

    • Ryan

I see where you’re coming from but I think he has a lot more range than the old one.

      • Jesus

I don’t know if he has more range, but he just has too much of a hardcore leaning for me

        • Jimmy

thats what i said at first, but he grew on me, now i think he is way better.

  • hackman

YES! Rareform still gets lots of spins for me. ATB and the Faceless are two of those bands that definitely aren’t going anywhere but up. Speaking of the Faceless, what about them releasing a new album second half of the year…?

    • krunkulor5000

YESSSS, well said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hope the production has better quality on the new ATB shit!

  • Driiven9

can’t wait for this. This was def. the band that got me into Sum-Core

  • Chris

I love these guys, though I’ve never seen them live yet and I live in Minnesota.

    • Bob

That’s okay – the numetal contingency still runs strong.

These guys impressed me on Summer Slaughter or wherever it was I saw them

    +1 for this article
great post, vince. took the words straight outta my mouth and i started reading this article right as my music player shuffled to ‘The Fractal Effect’, which was an orgasmic coincidence.

    boooooo

  • Facebook User

fuck yes ATB is one of the most under-appreciated bands to spawn out of the new metal scene IMHO. they fucking kick ass.

  • John Fucking Smith

ded we seriously need 20 posts about new albums your going to write about later anyway? we absolutely di dont. my google reader says “eat shit”.

  • AATHD

I wonder if it’s a marketing thing for these bands that play any ‘core’ to be photographed wearing a death metal t-shirt.

“DERP! that one guy likes Decapitated! Me too!! DERP”

    • Freedom35

How else are they going to gain “cred”? duh!

  • iolanach

Only whatever-core band i actually enjoy. Can’t wait!

  • Brownsound279

This post is absolutely correct! Here is a pre-production video from their new album:

Fuckin agreed, them and The Faceless are by far the best bands on Sumerian Records, they’re drummer is fuckin beast, their guitarists shred…they’re just great. I can’t wait to hear this new album it sounds like it’s gonna be epic as fuck. Every time I see them live I’m amazed even more haha.

  • Facebook User

    SUMATRA!!

  • Chris_L

Why does Veil of Maya always get over looked with you guys? You mention almost every Sumerian band worth a damn, except for the best one, which I think clearly is VOM. I think their new record is going to fucking crush every Sumerian release that will come out. These guy song writing is leaps and bounds above all their label mates….. Veil Of Maya needs more love on this site!!!!

  • Elpants

Meh, their last album was hugely overrated. I expect this one will be the same old shit.

And they are on Sumerian, so they are automatically docked 1000 points.

Man, couldn’t agree more. I’ve seen them twice in Seattle and they are amazingly good musicians. The first time, they were in between vocalists and played some of the Rareform songs purely as instrumentals — and the songs really help up well! On the rest of the songs, Karl Schubach from Misery Signals (also on that tour) stepped in and supplied the vocals — and he was better than either ATB’s old vocalist or the new one.

One of the only Sumerian bands I really appreciate. Looking forward to the new one.

  • Vince

Fuckin Conducting from the mother fucking grave!!!! After the burial is good, vom is good, boo is good. but shit the faceless and conducting from the grave own all them fools. And they are the least core band on the label. Plus they are new to the label. you guys dont say shit about them, trust me, easily one of the most tech, but still melodic and catchy tech death metal bands out there. breakdowns on the minimal. heard some new stuff and its mind blowing. seriously two leads simultaneously all the time. cover them metal sucks or im ashamed you didnt even look at all the sumerian bands. these guys are contenders for best band ever. and no im not affiliated with em i just recognize talent.

  • Mitchell

Heck yes, I can’t wait to hear more stuff from these guys!

  • Vince

thanks for the clear up. they should post a newer recording of the song cuz the new vocalist is better, and they cleaned it up musically and the new teaser for a part to a new song is ridiculous. cant wait for the release. conducting from the grave kicks ass.

  • Chan

Anything new since the third pre-production video?

  • http://www.proclaimthesky.com Ryan Miller

This is one of the coolest bands. Their production quality, and performance on the rareform re-release is much better, but I expect even greater things from these talented musicians. These guys have some the catchiest grooves ever heard in metal. Their songs will make you move. I hoping they will stay just as balanced as described above. I can’t wait to hear the new album.

  • esteban

their singer owns and Rareform is a dope album. i’ve been frothing at the mouth for months for a new album!!

  • G

Conducting from the Grave is okay, but not ATB status, or the faceless, or VOM for that matter. CTFG’s new album is a flop. Just sayin. New ATB an eventually new Faceless are gonna be the shit

and Opeth.. although they’re clearly not a sum-core band
