MAYHEM FEST 2010: AND THE LINE-UP IS…

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 at 9:07am by Axl Rosenberg

The line-up for the 2010 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival (Jesus I hate typing all that shit) has been announced. See who’ll be playing one of the summer’s biggest metal tours after the jump, along with my snarky commentary, of course…

MAIN STAGE

KORN – YES! I’M SO HAPPY! This means I can leave early and beat traffic. Phew!

ROB ZOMBIE – For all of the shit I give Mr. Zombie, I’m actually a fan of his pre-Educated Horses discography, and the guy knows how to put on a show.

LAMB OF GOD – Lamb of God rule live. Period. This is far and away the best band playing the mainstage. The only thing that makes me even kinda-sorta sad about this is that I’ve never watched LOG from a seat before, and I’m not sure that I want to.

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH - This will be a great time to go get another beer, or have an overpriced arena hot dog for dinner, or find a nice piece of lawn to take a nap and recharge your batteries after a long day. But I guess you should bring cyanide pills in case for some reason you find yourself in a position where you have to watch this blight on humanity.

MAYHEM FESTIVAL STAGE

ATREYU – Actually, I find this band kind of hilarious live, because Brandon Saller absolutely cannot sing worth a damn. If you enjoy the soothing sounds of a cat being raped, go watch Atreyu live.

NORMA JEAN – I haven’t seen these dudes play live in a few years, mostly because I’ve found their last couple of albums pretty meh. But Gary Suarez insists that they kill, so I guess I’ll hafta give them another chance. Plus, I’m not sure that anyone who was in the band the last time I saw them is still in the band, so it’ll be like seeing an entirely different group!

IN THIS MOMENT – In this moment I will not be watching this band play live.

3 INCHES OF BLOOD – Okay, so this is clearly the best band playing this stage. 3IOB’s live show is always fun, and it’s never too early in the day to start drinking, right?

JAGERMEISTER STAGE

HATEBREED – Even if, like me, you’ve found the last couple of Hatebreed albums to be kinda lackluster, there’s no denying that these dudes slay live. Hatebreed were meant to be enjoyed in a concert setting. I’m looking forward to this.

CHIMAIRA – Unless you’re just now reading MetalSucks for the first time, you know how I feel about Chimaira. I will never get tired of seeing Chimaira live. Can’t we just kick FFDP off the tour and give Chimaira a longer set?

SHADOWS FALL – Looks like all that campaigning for a slot on this tour paid off. This band puts on a great show. Stoked.

WINDS OF PLAGUE – I’ve never seen this band live. I didn’t love their album but I also don’t think they’re as bad as people say they are. I guess I’ll watch this one outta curiosity. Anyone know which cute female keyboardist they’re currently employing?

In conclusion: even with WOP, the Jaeger stage is clearly the strongest, while the rest of the line-up is pretty hit or miss. Still, if you get the cheap-o lawn seats, there are way worse ways to spend a day than watching Lamb of God, Hatebreed, Chimaira, Shadows Fall and 3 Inches of Blood…

And winner of the worst lineup goes to: year three of Mayhem Fest.

Ugh. This festival went downhill quickly.

    • Natsquatch says:

I disagree. Though it’s not as good as last year’s lineup, it’s still a lot better than the lineup from the first year. Eight decent to great bands out of 12 isn’t too shabby.

      Then again, that’s just me.

    • Russell says:

      +1

This festival sucks now. Look at the main stage arggh. Lamb of God is the only tolerable band on there. What happened to my Sounds of the Underground?

    • Molly says:

I agree, fuck this tour. What a horrible selection and I was looking forward to going and this year is a major let down. Last year was so much better besides Marlyn Mansion yuck. The only good band is year is Lamb of God. I was hoping for some good heavy metal, not lame metal. August Burns Red, Killswitch Again, BDM, All Shall Perish, Miss May I…something worth while.

  2. More like Meh-hem Fest.

  3. ceth carter says:

I want another Scion Fest. That lineup was stellar. hell even Bonnaroo has had a solid metal lineup the last year or 2.

  4. Genial Gentile says:

Behold…all the suck you could want, all in one place.

  5. From one of the best lineups of all time last year to a pretty lackluster one this year. Such a shame.

  6. myke says:

last year was great but this year it seems so blah i dont even think i’m gonna go now

  7. Hey Look! says:

Wow didnt take long for them to screw it up

  8. SonOF says:

I don’t think it would be worth paying for a ticket to see LOG and 3/4 of the Jager stage, which is what I care about.

    KoRn – boring, irrelevant
    Rob Zombie – see above
LOG – awesome, great live band, hold this lineup (on this stage together) somewhat; why are`they not above Rob Zombie? I don’t know ANYONE other than some moronic White Zombie hangers-on (and some complete Hot Topic wastes) who give two shits about Zombie, even if he has “a cool stage show.”
FFDB – shitty, soon to be irrelevant

Atreyu – decent live show, but havent seen them since they put out like 3-4 awful pop punkish crapsterpieces, assuming they will be awful; shouldn’t be headlining a backyard, let alone a large fest’s `stage
Norma Jean – super boring genricore, regardless of what Suarez says
In this Moment – boring, band of “the moment”..next
3 Inches of Blood – I don’t like these guys at all, seems everyone else does in metal. have fun

    Jager Stage

Hatebreed – pure fun, live show is 2nd to none
Chimaira – great band, brutal live show…
Shadows Fall – another really fun, great live band, great rapport with fans, etc..should be good
WOP – meh; never seen them live, pretty much agree with Axl

So in conclusion, I’d say there it may be worth going if the bands on the Jager stage got reasonable amounts of stage time. The Mayhem festival stage can be completely ignored, as can the main stage other than LOG. Enjoy

    • chris says:

haha, you like hatebreed, it must suck being you. they are probably one of th emost boring bands i have ever listened to, oh and jamey jasta is a piece of shit.

    • ECDEU says:

Why did you post this comment? All you did was say exactly the same thing as Axl just in shorter and less complete sentences? Did you even read this article because it would pointless to read it and then post this comment.

  9. Ryan says:

    Sooooooo noootttt there

  10. Tayne Hughes says:

    woo.. what a line up.
let me just start by saying, how can korn be headlining? thats just sad. mayhem fest to me, was all the undergroundish kind of thrash and death metal. But Korn? KORN? SINCE WHEN WAS NU-METAL CONSIDERED MAYHEM? AND ATREYU? WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO WE LIVE IN TO DESERVE THIS KIND OF PUNISHMENT?!?

looks like if i go this year, i’ll just be going to see the jager stage. hopefully korn will be the assholes they are and drop out right before the tour starts, forcing them to get someone WAAAAAAAY better to headline. i might stay after ivan moodys head explodes to see zombie play, but im not very impressed this year AT ALL. how can you go from slayer to korn? i dont know. i go for the second stages anyways, because thats where the REAL mayhem is.

  11. builtforsin says:

This will bring much suck from city to city.

  12. Skeletonwitchcraft says:

wow what a awful line up. reminds me of the ozzfests when numetal was big.

also, since i never gone to any of these suck fests, are there stages outside the arena? with all these names for stages do they just switch sponsors half way through the night or what.

    • They set up two stages side by side away from the main stage. While one band plays on the Jagermeister stage, they set up the one beside it, and vice versa. What sucks the most though is if I recall, the side stages only get about 30 minutes.

  13. Kye says:

How the hell did Warped Tour end up with a better lineup than Mayhem?

That said, I’ll still go for Rob Zombie, Lamb of God, Atreyu(cause, for whatever, I’m still going to assume their live show is as good as it was in 04), 3 Inches of Blood, and Shadows Fall.

  14. Honeynutzz says:

How is Lamb of God not Headlining this shit.

    What a waste.

  15. Lord Bling says:

The only band on this that I want to see (and haven’t seen live before) is Hatebreed. And one band is not worth the trouble.

BTW, has a festival ever went from such a great lineup to such a shitty one in just one year?

  16. Frampler says:

The payback for North America getting the Orgasm BTBAM, Cynic, DT, STS tour is that you get horrible arena-based festivals with mostly mallcore acts.

We have to do without that tour, but we get to console ourselves with Download, Sonisphere, Bloodstock, Grasspop, Wacken and the rest. If I lived in the States, I’d probably come over to Europe every June for a couple of festivals.

    • msv81 says:

Say what you will about the others, but Maryland Deathfest and the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival are both fucking AWESOME.

That said, I attended Wacken last year and it was the best music/metal experience of my life. I already have my ticket for this year.

    • chris says:

you can have all those as long as we can keep bonnaroo and coachella. BONNAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. TXHellbilly says:

Why cant Goatwhore or Skeletonwitch get spots on these tours if fucking WOP, Norma Jean and Atreyu can? What the fuck??

  18. stew says:

looks like im saving money this summer!

  19. Nate says:

Only good bands are LoG and Chimaira. And trust me, don’t bother seeing Winds of Plague live. Castrating yourself with a cheese grater results in a better sounding experience.

  20. Corpse555 says:

    yeh, this shit sucks

  21. wordmcface says:

wHy don’t all you whiny little16-year olds just shut the fuck up. Relax. what is this show 40 bucks sounds righteous to me. eVery one of you childsminders named multiple bands that you want to see. I think this billy bill is great. NOT HEAVEN FORBID i have a woman or i’m a toolbox and ffdp and korn and rob zombie are the only reasons that i go. I wish ODERUS would come to all you guys worlds and wipe you from the EARTHFACE.YOU and yourn opinions are insignificant p.s. 3IOB didn’t sing cut u up with a linoleum knife
p.p.s. i still like korn’s self titled blind, balltongue, let it all out, that song where his dad rapes him, p.p.s.s.don’t forget all of you guys liked slipknot and atreyu when that shit was obscure. FLAME ME YOU FLAMERS. //SHIT|STAINS\\

    • Nate says:

You cannot type intelligently, can you?

      • Alex_P says:

Is he for, or against all of us going? I can’t tell. He’s offended that some people are going and some people aren’t, but I can’t tell which party offends him.

Also, 16-year old should not be a valid insult, especially not coming from a dude who writes like I did when I was… never mind, even in elementary school I could write better than this. I’ve been reading since before kindergarten (albeit in French, as I learned English a year later), so I guess I’ve never written this poorly.

  22. Ryd1ZZ says:

Some LOG/Chimaira off dates would be perfect.

  23. Geekbeater says:

SO they brought back FFDP for a second runthrough? Thats interesting since I spent half their set at the first Mayhem fest BOOING THE SHIT OUT OF THEM. The Jager state is basically Hatebreeds summer tour from last year. Which is fine by me since Chimaira will guaranteed be the best band on the bill followed by Hatebreed. Sucks I have to pay 50 bucks to see 2 bands but whatever. Throwing cups of beer at In this Moment might be fun too.

  24. Elpants says:

This festival tour is in no way metal.

  25. Zombie(really) says:

I went last year, though it looks like I wont be going this year.

  26. Sin and Death says:

What a terrible line-up. There are only a handful of bands worth seeing.

  27. B-dizzle says:

    WORST FUCKING TOUR

  28. yetzer hara says:

thanks for giving me a head’s up. i won’t be going anywhere within 50 miles of this traveling shit wagon.

  29. pretty damn good lineup there. shadows fall, hatebreed, lamb of god, and rob zombie are more than enough to get me to go to this show

  30. This is awful. Would I pay a ton of money just to see, maybe 2 bands I like? No way. Last year there was Behemoth Cannibal Corpse, Black Dahlia, and fuckin’ Slayer! This probably won’t even come to San Diego anyway, just like last year.

  31. FrostMechanic says:

Saw the line up earlier today. I want to vomit…

  32. King Cheezit says:

How in the hell does Lamb of God go from headlining Ozzfest ‘07 and opening for Metallica for practically a year, and then 4 steps back to opening for Korn and Zombie?

  33. fuckman says:

How can Axl like Him, Muse and Lacuna coil and talk so bad about Korn all the time? At least Korn was innovative and is the reason metal came back in the early 90s. Think about it while you listen to your fucking gay music.

  34. Lady Death says:

    Mayhem fest 2010. noun
    a. The adult equivalent to finding out that Santa isn’t real.
    b. The metal equivalent to learning that Dio lip-syncs.

    • Andy Synn says:

Don’t even joke about either of those.

Also, hopefully Shadows Fall will benefit from some greater exposure and become as big as I believe they should have been right now. Which would mean more tours for them (example, they’re bringing Goatwhore to Canada I believe.). Good for them.

  35. TXHellbilly says:

And I’m sorry, but adding, “Suarez swears they kill it live” is not a good fucking endorsement for the live quality of a band.

  36. brian roach says:

Wow. Horrific. Shadows Fall, 3 Inches of Blood and Lamb of God are the only interesting bands. Absolutely appalling.

  37. Gecko says:

My biggest problem with this is that the bands I’m excited for; Hatebreed, Lamb Of God, Zombie, Shadows Fall, Chiamara; I’ve already seen before, and for way less money! If it’s close enough and cheap enough, I’ll debate it, but for the most part, I’ll let it go through town without me. And for the record, regardless of what anyone says, watching Maria Brink bounce around for a half an hour is still worth seeing. They’re terrible live (and average at best recorded), but she’s still got sugartits…

  38. Alex_P says:

Hatebreed suck live. I saw them with Cannibal Corpse, and I was glad they were playing last because it meant I could walk out 20 minutes into their set. The only thing which gives them a “good” live show is their legions of fans. Of course, I’m naturally biased against tough-dude jock-rocking posing as metal, so maybe I’m not the best judge of their live show.

  39. wyzt says:

Sweet! Not a single good band. Brutal!

  40. DirtyDan1057 says:

Warped Tour here I come. How you can clusterfuck this tour so quickly is beyond me.

  41. Ziltoid says:

Wow, an annual tour that has always been shitty somehow finds a way to get even shittier! I think the big question is how they will top this level of shittiness next year. Limp Bizkit?

  42. tim says:

I got psyched when I saw that the bands had been announced, but now I’m kinda pissed. LoG and Hatebreed are the only bands that interest me on that lineup.

  43. Rachel says:

It was rumored Killswitch Engage was coming back. I’m seeing Winds of Plague in a few weeks, so I guess I’ll be making my judgement on them after that. I think the thing for me that would be interesting to watch will be the mix of metal scenes beat the shit out of each other in the pit.

  44. Kevin says:

The only band I like is 3iob…
Well I guess I will just have to go to the smaller shows this summer.

  45. Jeff Miller says:

    dude… what a disappointment… korn? really? honestly?

last year was awesome with whitechapel, black dahlia, behemoth, cannibal corpse, & slayer. Didn’t care too much for the other bands. Killswitch Engage was awful.

only band who I’d actually pay to see there: LoG… and they probably won’t even play anything off of gospel, palaces, or ashes. Not really a fan of the last 2 albums.

…I’m going to summer slaughter, fuck this.

  46. Devastator says:

The lineup is huge weaksauce this year, but hopefully the only consistent good metal show will not disappointed. Every year, this show has a shitload of good bands along with a couple meh ones.

    I’m referring to Summer Slaughter,
the only summer festival I’ll probably go see.

  47. cpo says:

i love shitty liquor, energy drinks, and bands im there!!

  48. Porkspam says:

n the main stage (zombie and korn) are both fronted by singers who seem to always run out of breath mid verse/sentence. I’m guessing Jager got talked into this travesty tour by live nation.
actually i like zombie solo.. earlier is better, but we’ll see how this new cd coming sounds. he just always runs out of breath. and john davis has a freekin oxygen mask on the god damn stage next to his pimp chalace… ugh..
saw a shadows fall show last year and between bands they had on those projection screens upcoming shows and every time hatebreed was listed the crowd got furious. is there some rivalry?

  49. Malacoda says:

Fuck it. All I like it Chimaira and LOG, and I’ve seen both of them multiple times.

  50. Jake Ryan says:

wow fuck this shit. last year there wasn’t a single band i wasnt psyched to see.
this year theres not a single band i would ever pay to see.
i’d be more likely to pay them to kick ffdp off the tour, just because i hate them. i wouldnt even go to the show, i just want them dead.

  51. change says:

Fuck this tour. Even if the only good bands on this tour (Lamb of God, Chimaira, Norma Jean) did a tour together it wouldn’t be worth going to.

  52. Geekbeater says:

I just saw the dates for this tour and once again there are no NY dates? Really? I have to travel to SHITTY NEW JERSEY to see this show. Great.

  53. Carnage says:

Face it kids there will never be a festival in the states that will please every metal head.Besides having shittastic bands such as Five Finger Donkey Punch gives us all a chance to eat, drink, shit, sweat, stare at boobies & laugh at all the scene kids wearing S&M pants & makeup in 100 degree weather.

  54. Winds Of Plague is the only good bad here id WNAT to watch, what happened to having cannibal corpse and the black dahlia murder playing this?! wtf

  55. warped tour is heavire lulz they got Suicide Silence,BMTH, Emmure(lol), iwabo,Parkway Drive, Whitechapel and the dillinger escape plan

hell, even attack attack is more metal, even nevershoutnever! is more metal

  56. Sean says:

Wow…..another boring summer tour soon to be filled with entry-level metalheads who look like a cross between dirty, greasy heshers from 1988 and fat, morbidly obese clowns who drink a lot of highly carbonated sugar water and run around with axes.

  57. katie says:

WTF did someone have a brick drppoed on their head this line up is pretty much horrific besides lamb of god zombie and chimaira is this really worth my 70 bucks last year hell yeah this year not so much fail epic fail who the fuck picked these bands im soo gonna start my own metal festival god im pissed WTF korn why korn im flabbergasted

  58. Andrew says:

For my money, the Jager stage is all i truly care about. and i’ve seen my share of bands for a 17 year old living in god forsaken Arknasas, and WOP are easily top 3. i was extremely disappointed with the new album but i saw em immediately after the release and even then they mostly played stuff off of Decimate the Weak and they totally blew Chimaira and Dying Fetus outta the place!

  59. alex haskett says:

1 good band in total in my opinion and thats 3 inches of blood

  60. brandon says:

this reminds me of when i saw LoG, Hatebreed, 3ioB and Alabama Thunderpussy on an offset show of ozzfest here in richmond. LoG and Hatebreed killed. As much as Hatebreed is booorring on their albums, they are quite frankly incredible live, if just for the sake of the crowd involvement. Plus, they are the only major band I’ve ever seen throw stacks of CD’s into the crowd, which was kinda cool I guess? MAYBE NOT, I DUNNO? tHis tour is pretty lame i guess, wulda been an epic boner when i was 13 though

  61. Venom says:

For those of you saying stuff about Summer Slaughter, I know All Shall Perish is one band supposed to be on it. Other than that, we’ll just have to find out the rest when they announce it.

Anyway, Mayhem Fest this year definitely doesn’t look as good as last year, but’s it’s alright. I’ll probably go. About the only bands I DON’T want to see if I go is Atreyu and FFDP.

  62. Think of it this way. How could you beat last years line up? Mayhem fest is going to suck for now on.

  63. Brutal Jay says:

It’s pretty disappointing. Especially because last year’s line up was so strong. There were only like 2 bands on last year’s line up that I didn’t wanna see. Oh well. Maybe next year will be better.

  64. Dudedude says:

Im glad there’s only one date in cali. only bands worthy of being spent on are shadows fall (YESSS!), hatebreed,LoG of course, 3 inches of blood and ive heard wop, chimaira, and norma jean are pretty sick so i guess im wondering if its worth the 3 hr drive. Love Korn, but would rather have seen em 3 years ago when they had their original lineup.

  65. Anthony says:

    Fuck you all, Korn’s awesome.

However, the only Canadian city that gets this festival is unworthy, dirty, Montreal? so I get to miss out on Shadows fall, Lamb of God, and Chimaira because Korn decided to do a Canadian tour with opening acts FFDP and…2 Cents.

I’ll take Korn any way I can, but that blows.

  66. rick deliz says:

    PUYA!!!!!!!!!!!!! PUYA IS BACK! http://www.puyapr.com

  67. Metallicafan666 says:

So hardcore man. I will be going. It would be even better if they had disturbed and metallica and slipknot. I love All hope is gone their new album! Sulfur is SOOOOOOO hardcore! And death magnet is hardcore as well man. I love metal man I’m hardcore as it gets. Oh wa ah ah ah ah. fucking disturbed man. Hardcore.
