ARSIS ARE HOT FOR TEACHER

Thursday, January 21st, 2010 at 9:42am by

The MetalSucks-sponsored Tyrants of Evil North American Tour 2010 featuring Arch Enemy, Exodus, Arsis and Mutiny Within kicked off last night in Maryland! And just in time for the tour launch, Arsis have released their new video, “Forced to Rock.” Maybe I’m reading into this too much, but it seems to me that the David Brodsky directed clip was at least partially inspired by Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” video – I mean, I know there’s no direct corollary between the two beyond a classroom setting, but I know for a fact that Arsis’ James Malone is a Van Halen fan. Plus, I’m still convinced that there’s a bigger hair metal influence on Malone than some death metal fans would like to admit.

But who knows? Maybe Malone just really, really likes My First Sex Teacher.

By the way, the role of “Miss Rock” is played by Kym Dylla, vocalist for Virginia’s Thismeansyou. I’m not familiar with that band, but if they’ve got Arsis’ seal of approval…

If anyone was at last night’s Tyrants of Evil show in Maryland, drop me line and let me know how it was. For everyone else: get tour dates here. It’s gonna be such a killer show.

that band, thismeansyou, is awful. their singer and i share some mutual friends, but i think she’s a metal groupie.

  • Moyles

arsis is the shit, and this video is awesome.

    • jtquake

agree with the first part, disagree with the second part.

  • msv81

Seeing this tour in 10 hours, the count down has begun. I’m so fucking excited!!!!

    • Skanes

      Have fun.

  • needly needly doo

bitch from thismeansyou wants to be julie christmas really fucking bad

    • tyler09

      she sounds like Maria Brink

  • http://www.graphicdesignartist.net John Fucking Smith

that dude looks like a vampire

  • Bob

    lame

  • Sean

This is lame. But I have to give credit to Arsis for out-doing Children Of Bodom in the likes that COB couldn’t have done; mange to carry on their Gothenburg-inspired metal to better heights while trying to incorporate “I’M SO 80′S WITH MAH HOT PINK C.C. DEVILLE GUITAR. LOOK AT ME I IZ SOOOO IRONIC. LOLZ!1!” type of attitude about it.

I’m going to go listen to some Killing Joke for a band that actually delivers scariness.

    • R. Joseph Smith

lol “I’M SO 80′S WITH MAH HOT PINK C.C. DEVILLE GUITAR.” +1

      • narcopolypse

aw cmon that guitar is fresh. video is fresh. i guess you lames aren’t aged extreme metal fans who also pine for the era of hair rock. at least we had fun back then.

        arses i mean Arsis rules!

  • Hot Donut

I wasn’t at last night’s show, but here’s a thread with the Arch Enemy setlist:

I’m going to tonight’s show in Philly.

    • msv81

      see you in the pit!

  • Horeshine

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like Arsis has changed quite a lot from We Are The Nightmare, to this.. don’t get me wrong, it’s all still good…

Just strikes me that they sound very different is all…. Or at least have a different approach…
    Or something.

    • Bob

Dude, they changed since A Celebration Of Guilt

      • Horeshine

In all honesty, I’ve only heard the last two albums… So I wouldn’t really know what they sounded like when they started…

        • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com DemiGodRaven

You need to hear A Celebration Of Guilt, it’s fucking heresy if you haven’t.

          • bretton

they’ve changes so much on every album, except from A Celebration of Guilt to A Diamond for Disease, which are still the best

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

They have a different approach, but listened to back-to-back-to-back-to-back, there’s a natural progression to all of their albums and they suddenly don’t sound so different.

‘Starve For The Devil’ is definitely thrashier and less technical, though. Still a great album.

  • http://www.myspace.com/dystrophy1 Devin Townsend’s Lost Skullet

Anyone else notice that since he lost weight, James Malone looks a hellava lot like Iggy Pop?

    http://obvs.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/iggypop1.jpg

    • Andy Synn

      +1

Also, pink guitars are inherently metal. Discuss.

  • DruM

Whoa-ho-ho dude. Shoulda put some sort of discretion on that link to my first sex teacher. It ain’t for kids, if ya know what I’m sayin’.

    • Fasshole

the name “my first sex teacher” isn’t enough?

      • bretton

I was expecting a link to something explaining what it was, not a porn site

  • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

The video’s corny, but fitting for the song. As for the album, it may not be tech-death any more, but it’s still fucking great.

  • The Overmatt

The video really nails the tongue-in-cheek nature of the song. The pink guitar just gives it that extra bit of hilarity.

  • myke

the new arsis is ok but the pink guitar has to go dont dig it

  • R. Joseph Smith

I don’t know, maybe it’s me but I just don’t get this type of shit. I think it’s dreadful. Iron Maiden in their day was great. But the gross amount of guitar wankery in bands like DragonForce and this shit is ridiculous.

    • msv81

Did you really just compare Dragonforce and Arsis? Don’t get me wrong….I depsise Dragonforce and I’m indifferent about Arsis, but the two sound absolutely NOTHING alike.

      • Fasshole

but they both contain forgetful guitar wankery.

  • Bicro

Sorry, but is this really still the band that did “The Face of my Innocence?”

As compared to their earlier works, this comes across as falling flat, IMO.

    • jtquake

As much as it pains me, I have to agree.

For you recent fans: look at the video (and listen to the song) “We Are the Nightmare,” then watch this video again. It seems like these are two completely different bands.

Still buying the album, though. :P

ALSO: Since when does James Malone look like such a girl?

  • jonesy

I realize that Malone probably felt like Ryan Knight and Cesca the drummer stole his band from him. The only problem is they made WATN the best Arsis album and nothing they do now will even be close. They basically went from top tier melodeath to middle tier death/thrash with this new album. It’s a big letdown for me. Also, did anyone else catch this lyric from the new album “If we are the nightmare, I am the ten of swords?” Sounds like he’s taking a shot at his former, more-talented bandmates to me.

    • jtquake

      Good point, jonesy.

I agree with you here 100%.

I remember reading a review (it might have been here at MS– “We Are the Nightmare? More Like Wet Dream”), saying that the guitars and drums were essentially in a pissing contest to out-complex one another through every song. And that was one of the things I really enjoyed about WatN…

      • bretton

that’s what I hated about it… that and the lack of low end

  • dick?

yes it is evident that arsis have transitioned to a slightly less technical formula.
but their playing is still top-notch, Jim’s songwriting is still solid, and they delivered an album that fits with a lot of the “trends” in metal. thrash is starting to make a real “second-coming” in a few ways, and thank god for that. i’ll take the new arsis over any of those terrible deathcore bands anyday.

and come on, that pink guitar is badass. real men play pink guitars, and yes that means CC deville, no matter how much you may hate poison, was and still is (as far as i’m concerned) a damn good guitarist.

  • http://schenkeltown.blogspot.com SchenkelTown

    …you mean carcass?

  • Mike2

    Nice pink guitar, dude…

  • Ziltoid

This is power metal. And really bad power metal to boot. Of course it’s close to hair metal.

  • Biff Tannen

Arsis is a fucking horrible band. This shit (and their previous piles) are all garbage. This is sterile, plastic, vapid, souless, tepid,B O R I N G, technical pissing contest garbage. Seriously, this is the kind of stuff that gives death metal a bad name. It is WAAAAYYYY too clinical and robotic. I know the guy has technical skills, but he has absolutely NO song writing skills, and that is what is most important. Some bands only know 3 chords, yet have written dozens of great, catchy songs. Arsis knows music theory/chords/scales/modes etc etc, but have NEVER written a good song in their career.

death metal needs to have some FEELING in it. Such as :

Morbid Angel , Entombed (Left Hand Path, Clandestine), Grave , (Old) Deicide, Incantation, Ignivomous, Bolt Thrower, Death…… etc.

you kids are all fucked up in the head.

    • Ziltoid

To be fair, Arsis first album and the subsequent EP were pretty good. But the rest, I completely agree with you on.

      • iolanach

        pretty much, yeah.

    • leroydragon

      AGREE BIFF, YA CUNT.

      • mike

first album is a melodeath classic. No one should ever undersell it.

        • Andy Synn

I’ve liked all their albums so far, to varying degrees, All good int he hood in my opinion.

And I like more than just old Entombed too.

Plus, the more I listen to Arsis (who I love, so therefore am biased, I admit) the more I hear the obvious Death influence, taking some straightforward metal riffing and semalessly twisting it out of form. Still catchy, just such odd chord constructs and lead progressions.

  • DREADxPIRATE

Thank you, MS, for directing me to a porn site just when my mom walked by…

  • Facebook User

Thismeansyou just supported Monolith this past saturday here in Strasburg, VA. I thought they were pretty good, Monolith was awesome though.

  • g man

Saw this band with Goatwhore and Exodus at BB KIng’s..the singer fell of the the stage. That’s all I remember them for….

  • http://www.theoppositionmachine.wordpress.com theoppositionmachine

    well..im done with arsis…

  • dot

from the corner of bands i’ll never dig…

i’d totally hit maria brink. this bitch? nah.

    • dot

      correction: “hit on”.

  • Sin and Death

I went to the show Wednesday night. It was pretty good. There were a few kinks, which are to be expected on the first night of a tour. I assume they will be remediated as the tour progresses. Nothing major, but everyone seemed a little off. Just little timing issues, etc. Overall, a good show and worth checking out.
