GUITAR HERO: MEGADETH ON THE WAY?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010 at 1:00pm by

I didn’t buy Guitar Hero: Van Halen because it was a continuation of VH’s ongoing efforts to try and make people forget that Michael Anthony was ever in the band – never mind that Fatty Ding Dongs Van Halen wasn’t even born yet when the band’s best albums were made. That being said, I think modern Metallica is pretty lame, too, and I enjoyed their edition of GH. And I’d be totally down for a Megadeth version of the game, even if, once again, there would be some question of which ‘Deth line-up was portrayed (I assume it would be the current one… is Mustaine cool enough to let Marty Friedman, Dave Ellefson, Nick Menza, et. al. be unlockables?).

And I may get my wish! Metal Insider reports that Mustaine is now gloating about taking meetings with the makers of GH for a Megadeth-themed version of the game… or possibly something more. Via Megadeth.com:

I have recently had two very important high-level meetings with the people from Activision and Neversoft, and we are talking about a lot of things, but a Guitar Hero box set is not as attractive to me and the people from Guitar Hero as the new idea that they offered me, as the creative stuff that we are talking about is over-the-moon!

I just hope that someone doesn’t stand in the way of this happening. I know that there are a lot of really damaging results from our mothership (WEA) having some legal disputes with YouTube and Guitar Hero to name just a few.

Now, to be honest, I’m not sure I see Activision and Neversoft wanting to make a GH: Megadeth game. When you look at the other bands that have gotten their own version of the game – the aforementioned bands and Aerosmith – well, if we’re being honest, they’ve all sold way, way more records that Megadeth have. Which makes me even more skeptical that they might wanna launch a “new idea” with Mustaine and company. It seems much more likely to me that Mustaine would be a character in Guitar Hero the way that Slash, Zakk Wylde, and Tom Morello have been in the past.

But fuck do I know? Maybe all the involved parties think a Megadeth game would sell like blowjobs from Steven Adler on Hollywood Boulevard. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if Mustaine is being truthful or just blowing smoke up his own ass…

It’d be a fucking stupid business move to be honest with you, considering rhythm games have lost continual market share and guitar hero is a fucking dead horse. I saw it, and called bullshit. I wouldn’t be shocked if he appears in Guitar Hero 6 or whatever as one of the zombie celebrities that we can make perform YMCA like we did to Kurt, but their own game, fuck that. They already have all of Peace Sells and Sleepwalker from United Abominations on Rock Band 2 as downloadable. Just keep going that route.

  • stu1

I agree with both (^^) of you. There’s NO WAY IN HELL they’d get their own game. That’s just preposterous. The idea you could “be Mustaine” (as awful as that sounds) is far more likely.
And yeah, Guitar Hero is slowly but surely shitting the bed.

    • gibberish

Slowly? There’s Guitar Hero diarhea. They released, what, 4, maybe 5 of those games last year?

  • Kevin C

Mustaine just reeks of insecurity. How is possible that he hasn’t gotten over an incident that happened 20 years ago. I doubt this actually happens, as much fun as it would be, it wouldn’t see a fraction of Metallica’s or Areosmith’s versions.

  • myke

just what mustaine needs more of an ego boost to that swollen head of his

  • TallNerdGuy

For some reason, the people behind the Guitar Hero franchise think they can keep moving forward if they put out more band-exclusive games (such as with Metallica or Van Halen). That concept can only go so far, so hopefully (for their sake) they’ll go the route of the “creative stuff” Mustaine mentioned. But while GH has the same-old-same-old in the works, those behind the Rock Band Network are actually whipping something up that could actually have a decent effect on the music industry…or at least the music-based video game industry.

    • stu1

Absolutely. The Rockband network concept is going to stomp on Guitar Hero.

  • metalguy

hes very bad at GH. Did noone mention that he only wants one because metallica has one?

  • Sammy

I swear I thought he was a chick when I got that BJ! I swear!

  • IWRESTLEDYOURMOMONCE

I will be more likely to buy GH:Megadeth than I will Rock Band:Green Day…

  • http://www.graphicdesignartist.net J0hnnyRev0luti0n

Id buy a game console for this. And it’d be the first since original Nintendo.

This is an ideal band to do a new version of the game where the whole lineup past to present is featured, maybe even a different dave for each, but would they sell enough units to make it worth while? Probably not…

  • DemonicLemming

Two problems. Well, three. First, Mustaine needs somoene to stick a fucking thumb tack in that swollen head of his to release some of that pressurized self-importance that’s been building up for decades.

Second, Megadeth is not nearly popular enough – never has been, and never will be – to warrant an entire GH game featuring nothing but their songs. They don’t have enough popular songs to make up a full playlist, let alone enough good songs. Big bands like Metallica can get away with it because you can stock enough early, thrash songs to make the metalheads happy, and enough post-Black songs to make the normal rockers happy. Megadeth, not so much.

The third problem, and the biggest yet, is that the entire GH/RB thing has run its feet off. Instead of working on making the new games more innovative and, well, new, both companies have taken the approach of “Shove different shit into the same bag, paint it a different color, and sell it as ‘BRAND NEW AND IMPROVED!’” GH1 was insanely fun, primarily because it was a (relatively, ignoring the old, shitty attempts) completely new idea with an innovative way of playing along. GH2 was just as good, because it was still fresh, and had lots of new songs in it. GH3….eh….same shit, different bag. Rock Band was really nothing other than a controller change with different songs, and since its release, it’s taken the same approach as GH has lately. The market share for both games has dropped below the point where another “Guitar Hero: Major Band” release wouldn’t net enough profit to be worth it, and a Megadeth edition would simply be a showcase of how to lose money.

    • stu1

Rockband has developed the network though which is going to help. They’re the ones with vision, GH is doomed.

    • TallNerdGuy

In response to your third point, the Rock Band series is doing some things differently than the Guitar Hero series. For one, Activision/Harmonix has only released 2 full length RB games since the launch of RB2 (Lego Rock Band and Beatles Rock Band), while the people behind GH have put out A LOT of repackaged and barely updated drivel. There were some track packs for RB players, but those were just physical disc versions of downloadable content that people without internet can play. So at least RB isn’t completely flooding the market.

Another difference is that aside from the Beatles Rock Band, they haven’t been trying to shove as many pointless rock star avatars into their game as the GH series has. Who seriously gives a shit if they get to play as a CGI version of Ozzy Osbourne, James Hetfield, or Kurt Cobain?

But the main difference between the RB and GH series’e is one very impressive service that GH doesn’t offer: The Rock Band Network. Look into it at http://creators.rockband.com/ or at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Band_Network

    • DemonicLemming

True; however, I think the whole fad with that style of game crested a while back, and has just been falling off since. Any changes now are just going to delay the die-off point for the two games.

  • Dave

I guess by “two very important high-level meetings” Dave means that he spoke to the secretaries at Activision and Neversoft….who refused to put Dave’s call through to the bigwigs upstairs despite him playing his only trump card of being an “ex-Metallica member”.

Dave needs to seriously wake up to reality. His days of gold and platinum records are long over. His days of having any real commercial viability are long over. Those days will never return. For the past 3 albums he has been whining about his record sales, trashing his record companies, and threatening to disband Megadeth.

If Dave has any chance whatsoever of getting a Guitar Hero game, it’s because the franchise is collapsing in the over-saturated rythm game genre and these companies are getting desperate. If they do make the game it will be a collosal sales failure and a money-losing project. Not that Dave cares….he just wants to be able to say he has a GH game. And can you imagine how bad it would be? There are no signature gigs or venues in Dave’s career to re-create like there were for bands like Metallica, VH, and the Beatles.

    • stu1

Totally. Who have their own games out there now?
      Beatles
      Aerosmith
      Metallica
      Van Halen
How in the FUCK does Dave even THINK he’d get one?
U2? Green Day? Nirvana? Rolling Stones? Black Eyes Peas? Guns N Roses? SURE. Dave? No.
I could even see a “Warped Tour” or “ozzfest” game where you could be various band who’ve appeared over the years. But Dave, no.

    • Kevin C

      + 1

      • Kevin C

        that was to Dave’s post

      • myke

i wonder if it willl come w/ a dean instead of the gibson guitar hmmmm

  • http://schenkeltown.blogspot.com SchenkelTown

Megadeth aren’t popular enough with the masses to get their own video game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Gavin/1396340262 Mark Gavin

They should stick to downloadable content instead of constantly releasing new games. I’m still playing Rock Band 2 and haven’t bought a guitar hero game since GH III.

  • Keith

Did anyone else notice he just about said esp, when asked what guitar he played? oops!

  • key

I guess it could happen. Green Day haven’t sold that many records and they’re getting their own game.

    • stu1

That’s a joke, right? Green Day have sold probably around 50 million records in the US alone.

As much as I love Megadeth and Guitar Hero. I can’t see Guitar Hero: Megadeth coming. If it does get released I don’t think it will do as much good.

  • charan

you stupid fucks,in case you didn’t notice he just said that he’s been in talks with the makers of guitar hero about somekind of venture, nowhere did i see the words “Guitar Her: Megadeth” in his statement so why don’t you all just shut the fuck up and stop hating on the guy just because he’s more famous than you…fuck’s sake

    • DemonicLemming

      How do Mustaine’s balls taste?

    • stu1

The dude is the lowest of the low. He’s a shitty human, straight up. And whether it said “guitar hero” or not, the dude isn’t famous enough, popular enough or relevant enough to be involved in anything of this magnitude.
So go back to night school and work on your GED.

  • Dave

I don’t hate him because he’s “famous”…..I hate him because he’s a shitbag of a human being. He’d sell his daughter into sex slavery on the black market if it meant he could have another gold or platinum record. Dave is all about collecting adulation for himself. And LOL at the people who always pull out the supposed trump card of “you’re just jealous because he’s more famous and has more money”. Typical fanboy response. Believe me, I want no part of Dave Mustaine’s twisted and warped bitter existence.

    • stu1

Yes, if you remember the TGI Fridays thing the other day, he says he lives in an apartment in fucking Petaluma. Wow, there’s something to be jealous of. I’d be even more jealous if he lived in a trailer. Christ.
