THIRTY SECONDS OF EVERY SONG ON THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN’S OPTION PARALYSIS

Monday, January 25th, 2010 at 4:00pm by

Earlier today, reader Dominic Coppola sent us an e-mail with the following subject line:

DEP Option Paralysis Bits

Unfortunately, there was no message in the body of the e-mail, so we had no idea what the fuck Dominic was talking about.

Luckily, our friends over at Metal Injection speak bizarrely uninformative e-mail:

Thanks to the power of Amazon.com pre-orders and one over-obsessed Youtube user, we now have a clip that compiles all the 30 second snippets of each song that will appear on DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN‘s upcoming Option Paralysis cd.

AH-HA! It all makes sense now.

Here are the snippets in question. It all sounds pretty great to me. Some mathcoreish stuff, some melodic stuff… everybody should be satisfied! I’m ready to hear the full album now.

Option Paralysis is out March 23 on Party Smasher/Season of Mist.

    These are different songs…..?

    Huh.

This is music….? I don’t here it…may just be these snippets though.

Another example of an overhyped, over appreciated band. Seriously, why do so many people think this shit is THAT good? It’s not. To me, DEP is mostly incoherent noise with screamo vocals layered on top. Big fucking deal. Ohhhhhh look how talented they are, they can write complicated music for complex people, like all of their fans apparently are.

Pshhhh, I’ll pass. Next band please.

What exactly are “screamo” vocals? Is that just the way you old people try to buck the trend instead of using “screaming?”

    • Dirtman73

Listen to The Locust. Then give DEP another try. There are some bands that do it right (DEP), and some bands that sound closer to the description you just gave (The Locust).

Or maybe you should just stick to the simple stuff like AC/DC.

The next person that uses the word “screamo” to refer to lyrics screamed in the hardcore fashion needs to be smacked. Seriously. On a related note, I was watching an episode of Lifetime’s “Wife Swap” (metal cred -2000), the one stupid mom was talking about her son was in a “screamo band” (it was just a pussy hardcore band with melodic parts) and dresses in a “screamo fashion.” (girl’s jeans, ear plugs, lip ring, tight hoodies) Seriously? People (including moms trying to sound hip) are using this word as a catchall for any punk/hardcore-ish music that has screaming vocals.

This word needs to be eliminated at all costs. It originally referred to a certain obscure style (which I admittedly don’t know much about..I just know it is very different from the music being called “screamo” today by ignorant people) of music “which predominantly evolved from hardcore punk, among other genres, in the early tyle 1990s” with such Fugazi influenced bands as Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Angel Hair, Mohinder, Swing Kids, and Portraits of Past, Circle Takes The Square. Somehow around 2002-2004 people just switched the meaning of the word to refer to bands that mix hardcore-punk screaming with clean vocals (Thursday, Underoath, From Autumn to Ashes, Poison the Well, the Used, etc.).

Usually this genre nonsense isn’t a big deal to me, but when people are using the same term to describe everything from The Dillinger Escape Plan to The Used I start to get frustrated.

  • SourDeez

Holy shit, this sounds just like the Dillinger Escape Plan. They should sue.

  • Brrrrrrt

    MIAM !

  • drumdude1616

sounds really good. a mix of old and new

  • Burton C. Bell’s Forehead

Never really listened to this band before, but the sound clips sound pretty awesome (Except for the bit that starts at 2:35…). Will probably pick this up.

    • Anon

      that part is the best.

    • SonOF

How can you be a fan of heavy music and not have heard “this band” (DEP) before? I’m seriously curious. It’s like being a fan of hip-hop and saying that you have never listened to Nas or something..

  • I’m not racst, but I hate Oceano

Wow that last song could have came straight off of an early NIN album. Sounds really good from those clips, it seems like they fused together the FNM/NIN influence with the traditional DEP sound better this time around.

    sounds pretty rocking to me
