I’M IN THE BAND: DISNEY STILL NOT DOING ITSELF ANY FAVORS WITH THE METAL COMMUNITY

Disney has been canceling metal shows scheduled to take place on their property since 2007, apparently because they don’t like the riff-raff that comes with said shows. And I don’t exactly blame them, I guess – I mean, I wouldn’t want a bunch of drunken Machine Head fans sniffing around my place, either. That being said, I thought this meant a nice, clean break for metal and Disney. We won’t bother you with our loud music, you don’t bother us with your Nazism*.

But no! Disney doesn’t like metal… unless there’s money to be made from it! A reader calling herself La Chupacabra  has tipped us off to the existence of a a sitcom on Disney XD, entitled I’m in the Band. La Chupacabra describes the show thusly:

“The gist of this show is a pretend 1980′s metal band who can’t make a comeback and hire a teenager as their newest guitarist after the teen lets them stay in their house.”

Well, that certainly sounds fucking awful! It’s like The Rocker in reverse. And guess what? I turned The Rocker off after ten minutes, too.

But I did my due diligence and found the below clip so I could at least know my enemy. And, yeah, fuck this show. Even the presence of former The Daily Show correspondent Beth Littleford doesn’t help. I hope there’s a cross-over with Metalocalypse so that Dethklok can just kill everyone from this show. Slowly and painfully.

*Unless we’re talking about Pixar movies. Anyone who doesn’t love Pixar movies can eat out my dirty shithole.

    I dunno, i didn’t think it was THAT bad. It portrayed metalheads as idiots, but then again, Disney portrays EVERYONE like idiots. and hair metallers are REALLY idiots. My 8 year old cousin asked me to show her my music after watching this — I think this might be that integration of metal into the mainstream you’ve been mentioning.

    The thing that really made me not hate this show is the kid wears a shirt in some of the commercials that says “Destroy. Popular. Culture.”

    I knew people would overreact to this.

    I actually like the show A LOT. I lol’d a lot throughout the first 2 episodes. Then again, this is the kinda dumb shit I am into outside of metal, anyway. And even though I’m not a Steel Panther fan…Iron Weasal are essentially a cleaner version of them, except it’s a show…so the members and characters have actual context.

      Though I haven’t seen it, I’m totally with you (and your blog) on this – it seems VERY amusing, and surely there’s nothing wrong with exposing kids to that kind of music, pisstake or not.

    It’s perpetuating stereotypes… but I’d say it’s more “Disney stupid humor” than “we hate metal stupid humor”. It’s typical writing of a show produced under them. Humor made for 8 year olds – but as Nate said, maybe it’ll open up kids to the possibility of not listening to the latest “THIS PERSON HAS RELEASED 1 SINGLE AND IS THEREFORE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AND AMAZING ARTIST EVER” that they forget about in a week.
    I mean, this is about a band from 20+ years ago that’s trying to come back. How many of today’s popular music artists will even WANT to try in 20 years?
    How many people do you hear giving a fuck when Eminem pops out a new release, nowadays? :P

    How could you turn off The Rocker after 10 minutes? The part where Raine Wilson’s Character throws up in his hand is priceless. and that Teddy Geiger character is adorable..

    hey that was actually pretty good. If the kid wasn’t in it I would totally watch this show. It’s like old school Mel Brooks kind of humor. And all hair/glam bands are made made up of idiots anyway.

    Dude, this rocked. I am not joking. If I had a kid, I’d feel OK with them watching this. Sure, it’s as watered down as any other dreck on TV, but at least it’s about metal. You hated Avatar, too, didn’t you? Or was that Vince? Are you guys even different?

    Anyone ever watch the show Z-Rock on IFC? Its not too bad…its been out for a year or two and is definitely aimed more at adults than I’m In The Band. Steel Panther made a couple of cameos on it, as well as some other random “celebrities.”

    Seems just as stupid as any disney show but doesnt seem to piss me off/give me a migrain like others. using the term heavu metal did get me a bit peeved. i dont need my sisters friends going yay metal but if it stops them from listening to the jonas bros. then its cool with me

    Not a single of the people in this show look like a metalhead. Well maybe the singer ( which by the way, I think is the guy who does one of the characters voices in uncharted 2)
    This wasn’t funny at all, although I think it might help young(ish) kids get into popular metal, which will then lead them into heavier bands ( which is the way im pretty sure most metalheads started listening to metal)

    I couldn’t even get past the intro! And Im 14! So much for a show aimed at teens. Only decent disney movies where pirates of the carribean and TNBC. The rest of the stuff can go fuck itself.

    im glad disney has good taste in music some of the time, but i would love to see a metalocalypse parody of the show. i did this on a psp so sorry for the lack of capitaliztion and grammar.

    Well is not that bad, they are like jack black on school of rock… what I hate it´s than everybody seems to go crazy and try to get all audiences… so instead of drunk, angry, smoking, womanizer and drogadict rockers they just are some childish morons…

    At least the music it´s kinda good, not like a lot of “rocker characters” than play stupid popish emo songs whit no one fucking guitar solo, no one gaaahhh!

    And they are not so stupid compared to a stupid mexican band named moderatto than actually are threated like a real band (they feell it like a very long and stupid joke, and they even are part of another -really good- bands named Fobia and Molotov). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moderatto
