WORMROT HAVE AN EARACHE

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 at 3:10pm by

I only recently discovered the blog Grind and Punishment after its proprietor, Andrew Childers, made a killer modern grind mix for Invisible Oranges. But it’s a great site, and it’s clear that Childers knows wwwaaayyy more about grind than I do, so I’ve been devouring its old posts ferociously.

Childers named Abuse, the debut album from Singapore’s Wormrot, as the best grind album of 2009, so, of course, I checked it out. Good job, Andrew: Abuse is killer. It was apparently only officially released in Singapore (which is not to say you can’t get it elsewhere if you’re mildly clever), but a press release now tells me that the band has signed to Earache, who will give the album a CD and LP release with extra tracks sometime this spring.

I’m sure that there are some tr00 grind fans who will find the idea of Wormrot signing to a known metal label – and one that houses Oceano, no less – offensive. But I have a hard time imagining three dudes from Singapore who started a band called “Wormrot” from ever selling out. Whatever gets this band’s music into the greatest number of ears possible strikes me as good news.

Check out Wormrot on MySpace.

    Band is fucking sweet.

TVG records out of germany actually put out the first pressing of this on vinyl. I was really hoping you guys would cover this.

I like Wormrot and everything, but why Earache, of all labels, decided to sign them is a bit odd. I mean, I didn’t think Earache was interested in releasing grind anymore. Now they’ve signed an underground Singaporean (is that the right demonym?) band whose debut full-length only came out last year.

Is this the start of something new? Are Earache going to start dealing in grind again? Or is the Wormrot signing a one-off?

And De Anarkistiske An(n)aler was the best grind of 2009, hands down. It’s #2 on GaP’s list… I’ll also say that I’m not surprised to find Napalm Death’s not on that list.

Earache just re-released Insect Warfare- World Extermination in 2009

      • Fasshole

Which is quite possibly the best grind record of all time.

      • Dysenteric

Yes, but that was just a re-release, and that Grind Madness at the BBC boxset was just a compilation.

I don’t know – maybe if deathcore and retro-thrash dies down soon, Earache could start doing grind again. Then again, they might not. Time will tell.

This guys holding out hope that they’ll start putting out grind again.

I love Abuse – it’s an amazing album. I bought if after reading the Grind and Punishment review last year. Got it from Relapse mail-order.
Also reviewed it over here: http://atanamar.blogspot.com/2009/10/wormrot-abuse-scrotum-jus-records-2009.html

You’ve got to check this shit out. Wormrot rule. Congratulations to them on signing to Earache, although I don’t see why Relapse didn’t sign these guys.

Also, Grind and Punishment is one of the best blogs in existence. Andrew Childers is a hell of a writer.

DAMN, that sounds really fucking good! Grind w/o any trace of (Death) Metal, the way it should be.

  • Phro

While I DO like grind with lots of death…I’m also liking this wormrot…

It’s stuff like this that keeps me reading Metal Sucks!

This band rules. Whatever Earache’s motives for signing a band that actually produces GOOD music again may be, I’m just happy to see that Wormrot will be reaping the benefits.

Hmm. Well, I am from Singapore, and I can honestly tell you I’m quite in sync with the metal scene here, and I have never heard of Wormrot. To tell you the truth, there are many many better metal bands here. Meza Virs, Rudra, Meltgsnow, to name a few.

    • Belial Hatehammer

Joey, the reason you have never heard of them is because you are too young and know nothing but famous amos band only.. the band,Wormrot is fucking underground and they are speciallised in Grind/death… one killer band = superb drumming, killer riffs, sick vocals.. before you go around and flaming other bands when they have reached elsewhere than the bands you mentioned, do not ever do that again because you are just defaming and make the bands you just mentioned look so pathetic that a band that you never heard before sign with a major label and bands you worship dont sign with any major label.. so respect is the key word.. and only comment on the bands you prefer.. if you dont like, just ignore.. it would be better that way.. cheers! Wormrot, you got my salutes and respects.. congrats on the label signing and Cheers with Beers!

You don’t understand anything about how the music business works, do you? You honestly think none of the bands I’ve mentioned got approached by the top labels before? Meza Virs have been approached by Candlelight. Rudra have been approached by Earache as well. They turned it down. You know why? Because they understand signing with a major label when they haven’t reached a certain level is stupid because the labels aren’t going to give you any financial backing. Sure they’ll get your album in certain hard to reach places, but there is not marketing muscle behind it. Give Wormrot two years. They’re going to regret signing with Earache because they’re going to end up losing more money than they would have if they self-released their work. So please, don’t give me that bullshit ‘underground’ nonsense. I know my fair share. And for the record, I didn’t flame Wormrot. They’re good, but there are way better bands out there. Oh, and there’s a guy who did a column here, Albatross I think, he explained clearly how the label contract works. Perhaps you should give it a read.

*yawns* coming from a 2000+ era kid.. well, cant say much.. why didnt you mention Impiety who has signed with major labels and tour to places that even all those bands you mentioned didnt think of.. losing more money? if u believe in what you do and know how things work, you will know how to deal with it and be successful in both financially and musically.. if i dont understand music business work,i wont be bother that much about the big labels signing bands anyway.. if you know how to make a deal with the label with good royalties/share of sales and tours in the package, you can work things out.. never look down on others.. i believe all bands can go out there be successful in anyway they are going through..

    • jacck_blackk

u know what joey?? u can say anything about worrmrot.. but at the end of the day, we all know that wether losing or gaining money, they have been to places…. not like u..stuck in your own pile of shit havent go anywhere…

grow up kid…this is grindcore we are talking about…not metal…
i bet u also didnt know about FLESH DISGORGED(death/grind)… its arif’s last band before he made WORMROT…

and not to mention, all 3 of them, ARIF, FITRI, and RASHID is a very good friend of mine… so dont talk dirty about them…u dont know who there are….

for the last, grindcore is for passion..they are not chasing the money…

  • Seth White

HEY JOEY….ONE SENTENCE : YOU DON’T KNOW GRINDCORE.

  • FleshGrinder

Hey Joey… Well I have seen the Singapore Metal scene and have been in it since i was 15 going to shows, performing etc… Bands you have mentioned Rudra, MeltgSnow, Meza Virs, Beast Petrify, Azrael, Kaliyuga etc… All this bands have major influence in the Singapore metal scene… They have pathed ways for (then) younger generations like myself and even the guys in Wormrot…

Understanding the music business?? Hmmmm… Well I did a project on music business during my degree days dedicated to the undergound label and genre… Signing to a Major label is good exposure and worldwide distribution… Dedicated and poor bands like Wormrot needs this to aid them in pushing themselves to higher level of excellence in terms of musicianship and showmanship..

Since you say you know SO much about the music business and underground scene here, answer the following questions:

    1) Producing, recording, mixing and mastering album who will pay? (Without Label)
Ans: Paid by your own pocket for crying out loud… Remember we in SINGAPORE how fucking difficult it is to survive here with all the bills and stuff and OH I FORGOT you are only 19 you DONT HAVE TO WORRY BOUT SHIT LIKE THAT.

    2) Distribution of Releases and Merch, who does it? (Without Label)
Ans: YOU get in contact with different labels, you do trading and all and you don’t get anything in return except recognition.

    3) Tours, who pays and organize this? (Without Label)
Ans: YOU pay for your freaking tour and YOU and your organizer arrange this.

I know a lot of bands overseas and all does factors above is the main issue especially in places like Indonesia unless if you are rich…

My conclusion it doesn’t matter whether you are known here in Singapore of whatsoever, its the dedication, passion, quality and hardwork of the band that labels see which the norm usually fail to…. In Wormrot’s case, the qualities stated above were recognised by Earache hence the signing… Bands like Rudra and all yes may have had offers but there must be a reason why they turn it down or did not accept the offer…

Congrats to Wormrot and All the Best
    Fist Up Gore As Fuck
