BREAK IT DOWN NOW, A CAPPELLA STYLE

Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 1:00pm by

Axl may think a cappella “metallers” Van Canto are the worst thing to happen to metal since EVER, but I happen to think they’re worthy of at least a chuckle. I mean, think about what must go on at their rehearsals and songwriting sessions… I’d love to be a fly on a wall at one of those and just laugh my ass off at the hilarious sounds emanating from these Germans’ mouths as they try to construct songs.

But here’s something even funnier. Suckalo MBraids sent us a link to the video for Van Canto’s song “Lost Forever” which has, wait for it… an a cappella breakdown. It must be seen to be believed. Fast forward to the 2:50 mark to see the ridiculousness in action. Then stick with it for the “guitar” solo, which I have to say is pretty fucking nifty (even if the guy is using tons of effects on his voice)… I do this regularly during guitar solos at karaoke, only I’m not as good.

I can’t take these guys seriously, no matter how hard I try. I respect that what they do takes talent… I just can’t listen to them without laughing.

+1. Their cover of “Kings of Metal” has got to be the funniest/most terrible thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Although, I do kind of like their cover of “The Bard’s Song.”

      • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

Their version of Metallica’s ‘Battery’ kills me. Just hearing them sing “BAT-TAR-RY BAT-TAR-RY” for the main riff is fucking hilarious.

        • kvlt of personality

I FORGOT ABOUT THAT!!! Also, there’s a live version of them doing “The Trooper,” and the main riff is sung “The Trooper Iron Ah Maiden Gah Run Dun Dun Dun.” It’s fucking hilarious.

this ish would be okay with a traditional band arrangement. catchy generic power metal.

…you guys haven’t forgotten about Jud Jud, have you? The original a capella hardcore band.

I happen to be a huge fan of these guys. yes it’s a novelty but they pull it off so well at least imo. Their last album was one of my top for 2008.

    • Sacajawea

I agree. These guys are more than just a gimmick. They have some interesting ideas and are definitely better than all those douchebag a capella groups you see in all of the retarded talent shows on television.

If they, you know, used actual instrtumental prowess with the femme as lead vox, it might not be that bad. But seeing a guy vocalize a guitar solo…. that made me extremely sad for humanity.

      im scarred for life,

  • Anselmowitz

See I could dig this if it weren’t for the posing & extreme wankery. Gotta admit its pretty impressive that some dude is going “daladidum daladidum” for a whole fucking song non stop.

FYI, I’d love to smash that german chick in the pooper.

i think its awesome, i mean if they were playing this song with real instruments it would suck, but seeing how is its all a cappella makes it fuckin’ sweet. sure its still just a novelty, BUT its a pretty fucking awesome one. im so fucking tired of breakdowns i could fill oprah’s vagina with puke and then feed it to starving children, but i rather enjoyed the one in this video.

  • MetalSteve

    WTF!!

  • Chris

I enjoyed it. Cheesy as hell, but impressive, nonetheless. I’m pretty sure they know it’s cheesy, therefore, I have nothing against them.

    THE MUSICAL IS BACK

    • Sluga

      Hah!

  • Shitnuckle

I didn’t hate this as much as I thought I was going to…except for the “breakdown” part which I thought was mildly retarded it wasn’t bad at all.

Axl really sums up how I feel now that I’ve watched that thing:

“Jesus Christ, I just threw up in my own mouth a little bit.”

    • brent

That quote (from whatever Farrely Bros. movie from the 90′s) is the fastest-spreading comedy cancer in the world. Everyone who thinks they’re funny has used that fucking line. Let go of that punchline, internet writers!

I would rather be raped by a bear whose penis was on fire than listen to any more of this. Fail.

    • lordassenfroth

hey i know a guy if your really interested. the penis usually doesn’t stay on fire very long though…

You know what? Fuck you MS. Now I’m a fan of the biggest novelty-band on earth. Gaaarh!

    Dow-diddle-o-dow!

  • Adam

I heard a “doo wop” in there somewhere. FAIL.

(actually I think this band is quite talented but I fucking hate power metal)

  • LULWUT

I don’t hate it… and I’m slightly scared of what that may mean

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jake-Ryan/596440962 Jake Ryan

    uhhh i really hates it

  • PaxlRose

I prefer listening to a cappella via The Fat Boys.

  • Jonathan

Um, hey, this actually has creative merit, and it sounds fine. It may not precisely be what I’d call metal, except for the breakdown and solo, but hey, this isn’t bad at all. I’d like to simply say this: even if you don’t like it, if you can’t respect it, you’re just terribly closed-minded.

They may not be super epic. But they’re something actually different.

  • Dannibal

this could easily become my favorite band! i was in tears around the 1:48 mark…

  • MBraids

In spite of the fact that I sent this in based on the hilariousness of the concept of an a cappella breakdown, I really do love this band. Been following them since I first randomly stumbled across them a few years ago, and some of the commenters here have already touched on the reason why I like them: they’re different. It’s an idea that literally no one else is attempting, and I applaud them for venturing into new territory.

Even if that territory is ridiculously cheesy and hilarious in general.

  • Heavy Metal

Now if they just covered Rammstein, somehow the cycle would be complete.

  • Ølin of Carl

Silly to watch but sound pretty cool ja?

  • Francesco

    I fuckin’ love these guys.

  • Old n’ Tired

“…worst thing to happen to metal…”

Try, worst thing to happen to humankind.

They should be in The Hague being tried for crimes against humanity.

  • http://digitalvomiting.com Sinisa Dukaric

Jud & Jud did it way better :) and that was, maybe, what? ten years ago?:)

  • Misha Ratkevich

Their cover of “Kings of Metal” was FANTABULOUS. Other songs may vary, but that one was perfectly nailed. The original already had hilariously cheesy lyrics, the Van Canto version pushed cheesiness through the roof with better voices than Manowar themselves.
