COREY’S JANUARY 2010 BLEEDERS’ DIGEST

Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 11:49am by

Last year, I got way too busy with this thing called life and ignored this other thing called metal. As a result, I missed out on a lot of quality music as was evidenced by my paltry contribution to the year-end MetalSucks Best Of 2009 lists.

I am here to rectify the error of my ways, month by month.

Here are the January 2010 releases that got under my skin, burrowed their way into my brain, made my ears bleed, or simply tickled my unmentionables:

JANUARY BLEEDERS

ParadoxRiot Squad – Galloping gonads! How is it I have never heard of these legendary Germanic power thrashers? Clean production, clean vocals, crunchy guitars, non-wankyness, real songs – Holy shit!

Urgehal Ikonoklast – Propulsive, nihilistic, Norwegian black thrash metal that gets the noggin’ a bobbin’.

MiserationThe Mirroring Shadow – Swedish Meshuggahish mindfuckishness featuring ex-Scar Symmetry singer Christian Älvestam. Apocalyptic, cataclysmic, sick, sick, sick.

ValkyrjaContamination – Yet more Swedish black metal goodness. Our own Sammy O’Hagar nailed it with his recent review; however, I would have given it an extra ½ horn. Of course, they have the worst album cover I’ve seen in years.

RimfrostVeralder Nagli – Ever wondered what Testament would sound like as a black metal outfit (excluding Eric Peterson’s DragonLord side project)? Rimfrost it is and I like it. Norwegian Maidenesque black metallers go for a rougher production than Valkyrja and score in their own right.

AbigorTime is the Sulphur… - Austrian black metallers (are we starting to sense a theme here?) come forth with a brutiful™ two-song 38-minute mini-opus that redefines what progressive means and makes DEP/Mr. Bungle fans cry in their curdled milk.

Overkill – Ironbound – Finally, an American band on my list. Does that say more about me or the state of American metal? That remains to be seen. You know the drill. It’s Overkill. If you can dig the Blitz’s vocals then you will enjoy. If not, probably not so much.

Exodus Shovel Headed Tour Machine (Live) – Ah, more Americans. Of course, how come the only ones on this list so far are all old farts? Exodus killed on tour with Kreator last year (see my review here). This is the documented proof, Exhibit A. I can visualize the horizontal club-wide pit right now.

Barn BurnerBangers – Unfortunately, our stay in America was short-lived. Now it’s time to hop up north to Montreal to check out these heavily Sabbath-inspired ‘bangers who have easily recorded the best Stoner Metal album of 2010, even this early in the year.

IhsahnAfter – Coolest black metal sax since Nachtmystium from the former Emperor leader. Mixing black prog with VoiVodian discord, Ihsahn understands that the full-length album still has a place in our mind-numbed Ipodian culture. And guess what? He’s from Norway.

IngestedSurpassing the Boundaries of Human Suffering – Just when you think you’ve had enough grindcore to last you four lifetimes, along comes a new band to remind you why this subgenre is still vital. These UK lads crank out a nasty, hideous, ponderous pain which means fun for all.

Living SacrificeThe Infinite Order – Proof that the term “Christian Metal” is not an oxymoron. These long-time Little Rock metallers rock big for Jesus without proselytizing.

XasthurAll Reflections Remain – Lo-fi Lustmord-like leanings from L.A.’s lonely one to satisfy your inner demonic need for soundscape hell. Perfect musical background to enhance my writings about evil men.

Some of these releases are possibly late 2009 sets, first-time U.S. releases, or sneak peeks of upcoming albums.

Be sure and tell me what got you all hot and bothered during the past month. Musically, that is…

I’ve already said this quite a few times, but Ihsahn’s After is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard. It’s nice that it’s getting such widespread acclaim.

The rest is this list isn’t too shabby either.

I’ve been digging the new stuff from Ihsahn, Sigh, Mutiny Within, Arsis, to a certain extent Fear Factory, Orphaned Land, Shining, Green & Wood… Still waiting for the new Finntroll and Eluveitie. Currently listening to the new Dark Tranquillity (and plan to have a review done today or tomorrow). It’s not bad, although nothing overly exciting at first listen.

Oh, and Corey, you deserve a shitload of credit for bringing Angelspit to my attention. I’ve been listening to them as much as anything else, really. Fucking great.

    • Kye

I’m rather saddened by how underwhelming the new Dark Tranquillity seemed. I’ve only had time to give it one good listen so far though. I’ve had the same reaction to a few of their CD’s in the past that I grew to love, so I’m hoping that will happen again. It definitely has a few tracks that I’m digging a lot, so there’s hope.

I was VERY disappointed with Sigh. Looking forward to the others on your list. And, I’m glad you dig Angelspit. Great band indeed! I still have a long piece on them I never finished. Maybe one day soon…

      • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

I did a brief piece on them with a couple of video links (and a well-deserved shoutout… glad I remembered to include that). They kind of remind me of Velcra in some ways.

And I hope you do finish your writeup on them. I’d be very interested to see it.

    • DemonicLemming

Angelspit does kick uncounted asses; however, I doubt it ever gets a fair review around here (well, Corey would give a fair review, but I don’t even want to think of what the ensuing comments would be like). Unfortunately, since it’s not generic black or ____-core metal, most people on this site will hate it.

Sort of an offshoot from Orphaned Land, but have you ever listened to Conjure One or Lisa Gerrard?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Mitchell/660352330 Corey Mitchell

I’m familiar with Lisa Gerrard’s soundtrack work, especially THE WHALE RIDER. Beautiful sounds.

      • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

I’d like to see more stuff like Angelspit around here… it’s not exactly metal, but it is extreme music in its own way.

As for Conjure One and Lisa Gerrard, I’m unfamiliar with both…

Thanks for the heads up. Sadly, I am not familiar with them. I will check ‘em out.

after is the SHIT! ihsahn never dissapoints

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Mitchell/660352330 Corey Mitchell

Oh, and there was a boatload of awful Power Metal released in January. God, I have come to despise that subgenre.

  • Fasshole

I just got into the Ingested album, it’s pretty good. And I’m not really into the whole brutal death metal scene, but I’m not sure it even qualifies as brutal death anyway?

    • Dysenteric

Well Ingested sure as fuck doesn’t qualify as grindcore. Corey, where’d you get that from?

      • Fasshole

Yeah, half the bands that get described as grindcore really have nothing to do with it. Like Hate Eternal, for example. I think that pretty much any death metal with a shitload of blasting gets labelled that way.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Mitchell/660352330 Corey Mitchell

My ears. They released a split on a label called Grindethic for fux sake! Technically, they are part of a British subgenre called “slam,” but really, c’mon. Do you care about labels or good music? And just for shit and grins, Google “Ingested” + “grindcore” versus “Ingested” + “death metal” for silly numeric proof.

        • Fasshole

Who would you say they owe their sound to more, Napalm Death or Cannibal Corpse?

        • Dysenteric

I care a lot about good music, but genres exist nonetheless. Gotta be a way to differentiate one type of music from another.

Yeah, the label is called Grindethic, but that doesn’t guarantee that all its releases are automatically grind. Defeated Sanity and Terrordrome are techy brutal death metal, for example. Look at Grindethic’s Last.fm page – http://www.last.fm/label/Grindethic+Records for further info. There’s another label called Grindhead in Australia that’ve released albums by bands that aren’t necessarily grindcore.

          And “slam” isn’t exclusively British.

          • Dysenteric

Come to think of it, I don’t remember the last grindcore record Grindethic released. Eh…

  • http://www.last.fm/user/opeth027/ Kyle

I’m really digging the new Woods of Ypres (http://www.myspace.com/woodsofypres) record! Excellent atmospheric doom/blackish metal!

    • http://www.last.fm/user/opeth027/ Kyle

Although it didn’t come out in January — last November I guess — but I just heard about it in January

      • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

This has been in my queue of albums to listen to for a little while… it just got transferred to my mp3 player.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rik-Powell/286400508 Rik Powell

Miseration are good and all but I wouldn’t call them “Meshuggahish”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Mitchell/660352330 Corey Mitchell

OK, what would you call them ?

      • iolanach

        Death metal

      • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

I’d go with melo-death. Christian Alvestam (formerly of Scar Symmetry) is their vocalist, too.

        • mike

New album is simply modern death metal. Quite similar in style to Bloodbath’s latest.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Mitchell/660352330 Corey Mitchell

Looks like I’m in good company: Terrorizer magazine’s Olivier “Zoltar” Badin writes of Miseration, “…full of blast sandwiched between Meshuggah breakdowns to ensure full clarity.”

The new Overkill and Living Sacrifice slay. Also, if anyone is into industrial metal I highly recommend checking out Sybeed: http://www.myspace.com/sybreed. Their latest The Pulse of Awakening has been in constant rotation for the past month and a half.

  • Andy Synn

The Ihsahn, Valkyrja and Living Sacrifice are all brilliant.

The Ingested one gets old very quickly. Plus, once you get into it, comes across as very childish and one dimensional. The band do seem obsessed with the word “anal” in an attempt to shock, but simply repeating it in every song in a violent manner does not make you Cannibal Corpse.

Oddly, I heard the new Annotations Of An Autopsy (whose debut I thought was awful and just as childish as the Ingested album) and was vaguely impressed. The core seems to have been excised. I commend Erik Rutan for his devotion to enforcing and maintaining metal integrity.

  • Gaia

In Mourning’s new album: Monolith. Fucking good, Opethy but their own sound as it were.

  • Discipleofthewatch

I’ve been playing Havok’s Burn recently and liking it.

  • Dysenteric

I’ve just been waiting for Decrepitaph’s Beyond The Cursed Tombs to arrive in the post.

  • iolanach

The new Heathen fucking DESTROYS. How they could come back with such a powerful album, i’ll never know.

    • iolanach

oh, and the new Ihsahn and In Mourning are very good as well. The new Sigh? Disappointing, to say the least.

  • Alex_P

Barn Burner are twice as good live. I’ve been listening to their debut’s original pressing on New Romance for Kids records for several months, and they remain my homeboys. I’ll be posting a glowing review of the Metal Blade reissue for the Skinny Magazine in Vancouver soon.

    • Alex_P

Oh, and in terms of other stuff, I’ve been digging nothing that’s not old news by now. I FINALLY got into Scale the Summit, and FINALLY got a copy of Traced in Air (digi-book-ftw), I’ve been groovin’ Mihai Edrisch, and I got me some Death albums which I was lacking (Spiritual Healing digi, ft(other)w).

  • http://dcmetalreview.wordpress.com/ Dan-O

I’ve been digging the Ingested album since last August (my roommate went to Italy and picked it up there. How’s that for a staggered release?) and it’s pretty sick, both musically and lyrically. The only other one I’ve been digging on is the new Living Sacrifice which I have a review posted up here.

I’m definitely going to have to give the other albums a chance,. I keep hearing great things about Ishan’s album.

  • iLol

Cant get past the drums on the new ingested. They sound fucking terrible

  • Sammy

Rimfrost? Don’t think so…could get your tongue frozen….
