OH, FUCK OFF

Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 2:05pm by

I’ve just heard Oh, Sleeper for the first, and hopefully the last, time. How did it come to this? Oh, Sleeper (holy shit is that comma ever annoying) is one of those bands I feel like I keep hearing about, but until five minutes ago had never actually heard before. And then I saw that the good people over at Noisecreep were premiering the band’s new video, “The Finisher,” and I thought “Hm, I think I’ll have a look at that.”

The worst part is that I don’t think the video songs – it’s just that the song sucks. Although I appreciate the guitarist’s attempt to pass off a scale as a solo. That’s a neat trick for all musicians severely lacking in creativity to put in their bag.

And so here we are, with me typing this and blasting The Negation at full volume in attempt to wipe any traces of “The Finisher” from my memory. “The Finisher,” indeed.

I like this type of music but the clean vocals are way too sugary and the solo sounds Unearth’s riff that opens ‘My Will Be Done.’ Yeah, I have no interest in checking out this band any further.

  • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

Their guitarist was once in BTBAM. Thank God we have Dusty now.

  • builtforsin

To be fair, nearly all solos are some variation of a scale(s), dissonant or not.

    Also, these queers are queers.

    Fucking post-hardcore.

I like Son of the Morning. It’s generic metalcore but really catchy and I can’t help but enjoy it.

  • Keepitwolf

These dudes are from the same area as me. They were signed before ever playing a show. Shane B. is such an embarrassment. BTBAM to this christcore shit.

    • AAAAAHHHHHHH

I toured with shane & saw not an ounce of the “Holy Spirit” ? I hate people trying to cash in on jesus-sah

  • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/46e389eb8b79606050d3d447431ff6ac?s=80 Nate

Yeah, they’re religious, too. Another band that just proves that christian metalcore blows. And for all of you who proclaim Zao as amazing, they suck, too.

  • orbital

I downloaded their last album when it came out and immediatly realised I had made a grave mistake. Shitcore.

  • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

    Hooray for generic Christian metalcore!

I’m sure in a couple of years once deathcore is played out (I mean to the deathcore fans, since it’s already played out to everyone else) then we’ll see a huge wave of Christian deathcore. They seem to be a bit behind the curve.

for only once the satanists abandon the genre, can the true beleivers move in and take the music for our lord

This is off-topic, but your user name is awesome. Clutch FTW!

      • I killed a Dunky

I see that everytime a Christian metal band is discussed on this site then it gets negative reviewswww
reviews so which bands would u recomend and what if this band was singing to Ala or Buda or David oresh would that be cool? stop hatin or lets all form a freaking fight club

  • Meekal

    My thoughts exactly.

  • RandomGuitarist

Musicians are talented, band lacks…although there is a lot of shitty metal bands that go up on this site!

  • evilfatguy

The song is definitely meh, but I can’t help being impressed that I didn’t hear any autotune or FM synth in the entire thing. That’s not a good sign for new music.

“We’re sorry this video isn’t available in your region.” I guess I got lucky.

  • timmah

Wait, doesn’t this belong in the shitstain category?

  • http://www.myspace.com/jay234t Brutal Jay

Am I the only one that sees the irony? Seeing as how MetalSucks sponsored the tour that had Oh, Sleeper as direct support to The Human Abstract. And refereed to Oh, Sleeper and Vanna as “Metal core mavericks”? I love how you made that judgment and now say you’ve never heard them before. That’s super.

    http://www.metalsucks.net/2009/03/02/holy-crap-its-next-totally-rad-metalsucks-sponsored-tour-the-human-abstract-oh-sleeper-iwrestledabearonce-vanna/

For the record, I went to that show. And, of the opening bands, beside IWABO I thought Oh, Sleeper was the best. They have a great live show and are really cool dudes. I got to hang out with the singer… That dude is fucking huge. And, I liked their last album, “When I Am God” but, this song isn’t up to par with that album. Lets see how the rest takes shape.

    • Hot Carl

      MS, Boom roasted!

    • Andy Synn

      It’s not entirely “ironic”.

It could easily be explained by the fact that this is a vaguely structured blog with a lot of independent/semi-independent contributors whom it doesn’t force to tow the party line.

Honestly, it surprises me how quick people are to jump up and cry fowl when a blog or magazine showcases a number of differing opinions.

Still, this band aren’t very good. But that’s just my opinion/taste.

      • http://www.myspace.com/jay234t Brutal Jay

But it’s different opinions from the same person. The article I was referring too was also written by Axl.

        • Andy Synn

Hands in the air, my mistake then. A cursory glance at the other article made me think that although it was written onto the website using Axl’s name/account it was an expression of the Overall Site opinion, as it were, rather than his own. I’ve seen enough times on this site that writers are wliling to put their own opinions to one side (rather than being forced to) for the purpose of advertising factual events whilst still maintaining the actual opinion on the subjective value of the topic.

Still, a cynics view is that Metalsucks is actually jsut run and maintained by Dave Mustaine’s perambulatory ego with a view of world domination and they do and say all these things just to trick us.

          Bastards.

    • Dimebag6sic6

These guys are generic and that is quite ironic. Still, Im sometimes in the mood for metalcore and these guys are pretty good during those times

    • Ryan

Well that was before Axl found out they were Christians, obviously.

I love Oh Sleeper; I’m seeing the word “generic” thrown around a lot but to be honest I don’t know any one artist that really sounds like them at all. Different strokes, I guess.

  • Sambo

All you guys are stupid! Oh, Sleeper is a great band! This song is great! You guys once again just bash Christian metal like it’s the end of the world as we know it. Not ALL Christian metal sucks! Their older stuff is more heavier than their newer stuff. This song isn’t the best on their new album as there is much heavier stuff (Breathing Blood and A Banquet for Traitors are some heavy tracks). One of the reasons why I listen to this band is because BTBAM’s old guitarist is in this band. But in order for me to explain to you guys that this band doesn’t suck, this band ISN’T the worst Christian metalcore since some of you guys like this band and everyone one of you here HATES The Devil Wears Prada but I don’t see anything wrong with them either. Yes they’re both Christian bands. Does NOT mean you have to avoid them.

    • http://ihatejade.com/?id=1japi3153329oacnd59ftmp5ve6x2l jesus on the dashboard

Doesnt put aside the fact that they SUCK ASS.

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

Not all Christian metal sucks, but this Christian metal DOES.

    • Devilinside3x6

While not all Christian metal sucks…all Christians do, in fact, suck. It’s a fact 60% of the time Christians suck all the time.

      • Sambo

I’m not a strong hardcore Christian. I listen to non-Christian music, watch R rated movies, listen to Parental Advisory CD’s, and swear sometimes. Do I suck?

      • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

It’s also a fact that 72.3% of all statistics are made up.

        /Just sayin’.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

christian metal doesn’t make christ cooler, it makes metal worse

  • Facebook User

I liked “When I am God” but am not that big of a fan of the new stuff. There’s a huge poppy p.o.d. style influence going on in the new record that just makes me want to hurt things.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ian-Wilmot/1177765489 Ian Wilmot

    their first album was better

  • towdnd

Oh its soo cool to agree with the COOL dudes at MS. There are only so many ways to agree so shut the fuck up,if u aint got something new to say!!! I love this album! There, how u like them apples?

  • http://dmxrr15@hotmail.com IsntaTOTALdouchebag10

I actually really enjoy this band. I really like the riffs he writes. Not your run of the mill metal-core in my opinion, but once again that is my OPINION. Their next CD needs to really step it up though as I didnt see much progression as far as song writing between their 1st and 2nd albums. Good live show though

  • Ian

Shitty song, shitty video. Plain and simple

    • Sambo

This video has the same concept as the “Son of the Morning” video.

  • Tim

Their first album was much, much, much better.

  • FusionShreddist

I could care less about this band, heard this style way too many times to keep me interested, but the statement “Although I appreciate the guitarist’s attempt to pass off a scale as a solo. That’s a neat trick for all musicians severely lacking in creativity to put in their bag” is pretty off. That little “solo” is not scalar at all, after the legato part there are a bunch of arpeggios that don’t sound half bad.

It’s a pretty decent guitar focused section IMO. Maybe the author should learn about playing the instrument he is trying to comment on before ragging on someone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tony-Bullard-Jr/500191336 Tony Bullard Jr

Another dissenter here. I love Oh, Sleeper.

Just one thing that makes them stand out over other bands is that breakdown. 98% of other bands would have just strummed the open d (C, A, whatever those crazy kids tune to these days) and called it a day. Instead these guys are running scales in sick breakdown rhythms. This makes me happy in my pants.

It’s true though, this isn’t the best song on the album, which is unfortunate since it’s supposed to be the big finish to the story of the album…

So i disagree completely, but I won’t hold it against MS, as they introduced me to Soreption, so i can’t be mad.

  • lybrium

Well, I don’t think this is a great song either, but they have some really decent stuff. “At The End Of A Dark Campaign” from their first album is a stellar song. And they can actually play live, something that not all the bands that get credit on this site have in the bag. Not great, but not bad.

  • myke

a new name for a blow job huh?

  • B-dizzle

    Underoath already did this

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/James-Sterling-Rice/1030080162 James Sterling Rice

      Fucking lol

  • Andrew

You’re all lame…they’re good! They may be a bit corny but just bc they have religious backgrounds doesn’t mean they deserve to be discredited. They’re the kind of band that you learn to live over time…and for “shitty metalcore” they have some fresh ideas…concept albums are just plain interesting. And to the retard that said Underoath already did…shut the fuck up. You clearly know nothing.

    • http://thenumberoftheblog.wordpress.com/ groverXIII

Most of us aren’t discrediting them because they’re Christian, we’re discrediting them because their music is generic and lousy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Peter-Stockman/1172658628 Peter Stockman

THE GUITARIST HAS DREADLOCKS DREADLOCKS SUCK SHIT. AND THE MUSIC. LICKSHIT

  • EastboundAndDown

And God Forbid and Chimaria (just to name a couple of bands that are for some reason highly praised on this site) aren’t the epitome of generic? Great band, great guys, great live show, great album, and getting press on a generic website. With readers that for some reason jump at the opportunity to talk shit about more talented and more popular people than themselves.

    • Andy Synn

Sure, some people are talking shit for the sake of it. But it does seem that there are a lot of people legitimately unimpressed with the band.

Don’t get your panties in a bunch just because people happen to have strong and differing opinions from you. Just because peopel talk shit about them doesn’t actually stop YOU liking them, so why get stressed and antagonistic about it?

Also, random side-point and not an attack on your post at all, but it does raise a good point, why do lots of people insist on posting that bands are “good guys” etc as if that makes an ounce of difference for the music?

Perhaps it’s the down to earth, one-with-the-people / down-with-the-kids attitude that has been inhereited from hardcore, but personally I don’t give a crap if bands are good people. In fact a lot of the bands I find most artistically fuliflling are neither good, nor bad guys, but a mix of attributes. Lots of music is made by dickheads and I still love it.

      • EastboundAndDown

You may not care if bands are made up of cool guys. Personally if I attend a show and the band are total dicks there is probably a good chance that I won’t attend another one of their shows. But yes, some dickheads are still able to create listenable and impressive music. And lets be honest 95% of the bands that this site represents, death metal, hardcore, metalcore, black metal, power metal, grindcore, whatever, are all second and third tier when compared with the likes of Zep, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Stones, Sinatra, Hendrix. I just don’t see the point in totally ripping a band like this. It’s almost embarassing.

  • WayneSA

    I dunno, I like them

  • brent

Say what you will about their “originality”, the guitarist is a riff-machine. Every song is just 30 some-odd riffs crunched together. And while that does some disservice to a lot of their songs, (not too much structure, just kind of linear) for those of us who listen to metal because the guitars are violins in a symphony, it ends up being a plus overall. Just a bunch of cool guitar parts crashing in to each other. I say let them rewrite all the shitty metalcore that’s out there. Better these guys than lesser musicians.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Morley/618112437 William Morley

Their lyrics are horribly preachy. “I’ll rip off your horns”, Yeah, alrite then.

  • ITTOA666

Of all the lame christian hardcore out now, at least you can say this is 10% more original……..if you’ve never heard protest the hero.
