L O S T WITH AS I LAY DYING’S NICK HIPA

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 at 5:00pm by

Last year As I Lay Dying guitarist Nick Hipa mentioned to Axl that, like the editors of MetalSucks, he is a huge fan of the show L O S T (cue dying giraffe noise). With the final season of one of television’s great serialized mysteries debuting tonight on ABC, Axl and Vince thought, “Hey, why not ask Nick to do a series of columns about the show’s final episodes?” Luckily, Nick agreed! And so, without further adieu…

Hello fans of extreme metal music. My written word appears before you for one sole purpose: to share information, ideas, insight, and theories on ABC’s mind-melting TV show, LOST. In many circles, LOST is regarded as the Master of Puppets of prime-time television; hence, it is worth discussing on a metal blog.

Season 5’s finale, “The Incident,” aired ages ago, on May 13, 2009. A lot of life has happened for all of us since then, and I’ll be the first to admit that in the roughly eight months that have lapsed, I completely forgot about some of the mysteries and questions the show has posed. Thankfully, a few hours spent on LOSTPEDIA has completely rekindled my flame of enthusiasm and fanaticism for this show. If you’re in the same boat, I suggest checking out the Season 5 recap and The Mystery Portal to prepare for the onslaught of awesomeness that awaits for you tonight at 8/7c on ABC!

Those of you who are up to date are already aware that the writers have chosen to start taking the “supernatural being” approach to account for many of the mysteries they created in the earlier seasons. With it being made known that ageless Jacob has/had a nemesis with an agenda this entire time, a lot of the previously unexplained can now be chalked up to being “means to an end” – the “end” being, as we come to find out at the end of the “Incident,” the murder of Jacob by his Nemesis via the appearance of John Locke’s manipulation of Benjamin Linus. Hopefully they don’t use this as the complete explanation for everything (which would definitely be a cop out), but as a partial piece of the puzzle, it lends itself to some pretty interesting interpretations.

Here is my rough interpretation of the theories I have read regarding Jacob and his Nemesis:

In the first conversation we see between the two, Jacob (dressed in a white shirt) is depicted as optimistic with regards to the inherent good of mankind, where as his Nemesis (dressed in black shirt) maintains a more negative and cynical viewpoint of how people “fight, destroy, and corrupt.” Nemesis Dude then issues a threat that he will someday find a way to kill Jacob, which is successfully executed by the episode’s end. This violent conclusion confirms the gravity of the conflict between these two seemingly ancient-yet-ageless-figures-of-authority on the Island, with Jacob’s dying words of “They’re coming” insinuating that things are still far from being over. The relevance of this last episode, specifically this feud, is to suggest that the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 have in some way been pawns in the battle between the two.

In “Pilot, Part 2,” John Locke gives an explanation to Walt on the rules of backgammon: “Two Players, Two Sides, One is Light, One is Dark.” A few episodes later, in “White Rabbit,” we find two decomposed skeletons (referred to by Locke as “Adam and Eve”) each possessing a stone… one white, one black. Throughout the remainder of the seasons we have seen a ludicrous amount of black and white observations which have been noted and documented here; and in a shell of nuts, I think the point is that the writers have been foreshadowing the culmination of the two sides finally clashing together in what will hopefully be something epic and savage in Season 6. This makes sense to me, which is why I am supporter of the Eternal Backgammon Theory and also the theory that Nemesis Dude is actually the Smoke Monster.

The Smoke Monster has frequently been referred to as “the Island’s security system.” Taking that literally, we can only assume that as a security system, Smokey will eradicate any form of threat posed upon the Island itself. Everyone who has met their end by the death grip of Smokey was in some way a bad or potentially destructive person to the Island. The Pilot, although he was probably a good dude in real life, could have been identified as a threat based purely on the fact that he crashed a huge plane and destroyed a lot of lush foliage. Eko was read by Smokey to have a vicious and evil past (for which he refused to repent) and therefore identified as another potential threat, which unfortunately let to Eko getting vigorously taken to pound town. Mayhew the Mercenary was obviously a threat because he had a huge machine gun and was killing people. Jacob, however, would be the biggest threat of them all, in that he has the ability and desire to bring people to the Island. Assuming Nemesis Dude is Smokey, it makes sense why he would want to kill him so badly.

I believe Smokey and Nemesis Dude are one in the same, based on the fact that Jacob acknowledges the False-Metal-Locke we see beneath the statue of Tawaret as his enemy incarnate. The confirmation that Nemesis Dude can manifest himself in the likeness of a dead body on the Island (Locke) is consistent with the FACT that Smokey can do the same. Smokey also has the ability to read peoples lives/memories/intentions, which, if I am correct about him being Nemesis Dude, would explain why False-Metal-Locke had real Locke’s memories of being murdered by Benjamin Linus. This would also explain why False-Metal-Locke disappears when Ben seeks to be judged by the Smoke monster: False-Metal-Locke returned to his form as Smokey, appeared before Ben, then transformed into Alex (yet another dead body on the island) and told him to absolutely obey False-Metal-Locke or suffer the lethal consequences. This was the icing on the manipulative cake that Nemesis Dude has been baking since day one. Every manifestation of a dead person we have seen on this Island has been Nemesis Dude’s best efforts at gerrymandering the survivor’s wills to his own, with the ultimate goal being the annihilation of Jacob. I could go on, but I would essentially be repeating even more of what is already included in the links I have provided; so if you are interested, please read them to get a more thorough explanation.

As all things LOST go, there is still plenty of mystery to be explained. The most urgent of them all, at least for me, is who the “they” in “they’re coming” are. Also, it hasn’t been mentioned on a lot of the sites I’ve checked out that Claire’s “miracle baby,” Aaron, is still not back on the Island. Some heads up info that I’ve weaseled out of people (though never ACTUALLY confirmed) leads me to believe that an adult version of Aaron will be seen in Season 6, and he will be a valuable piece to the puzzle. Perhaps his conception off of the island and his birth on it could entitle him to some sort of authority, value, or reconciliatory quality to Jacob or his Nemesis. I have no idea – that’s just a shot in the dark.

As stated earlier, the goal here is to encourage and facilitate awesome LOST discourse. If any of you have rad theories of your own, cool links to check out, or any other crucial nuggets of information please share! I look forward to hearing what all of you have to say!

As I Lay Dying’s new album, The Powerless Rise, will be out this spring on Metal Blade. While you’re awaiting its release, why not get L O S T on AILD’s MySpace page?

  • Double D

    I’m “LOST”.

  • ColinJ

LOST is the greatest show ever. A title that, to me, has stood unchallenged since TWIN PEAKS.

    • two snakes

i’m both a huge fan of lost and twin peaks, but if you think so then you’ve never watched the wire.

      • ColinJ

Actually, I haven’t seen THE WIRE. But I’ve read nothing but rabid raves for it.

        • Boob

Throw The Shield in there as well. I think I like it a bit more than The Wire. The Wire is awesome, but it can get kinda slow sometimes. I don’t find that with The Shield….

Both shows are gone now….. Some network better have a damn good cop drama up their sleeves in the next few years….

    • Dirtman73

I have never watched Lost, and Twin Peaks was great, but the quality of t.v. shows has gotten so progressively better in the last 15 years that I have a hard time picking a show I would consider “the greatest”. Millennium, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Dexter, etc. etc. etc. I wish I had your surety brother!

Anybody who hasn’t seen Breaking Bad needs to watch it. It’s fucking awesome. Best show right now on t.v. IMO.

      • two snakes

Breaking Bad fucking sucks, it’s off the goddamn charts. The best show currently on TV would be Mad Men or something else, idk. But not this trainwreck of a “dark & gritty” show.

  • two snakes

DO NOT COMPARE MY LOST TO SOME SHITTY METALLICA ALBUM. THANKS.

    • ColinJ

Actually, you might be surprised to find that it isn’t.

      • Sophus

Yeah, for years I was in the “Lost is complete shit” camp.

But then I, you know, actually watched it.

Same here. I always thought it was some lame-ass survivor drama bullshit until my then-girlfriend made me watch two second season episodes.
          Been addicted ever since.

    • dave

actually ive watched about 3 seasons of itm it was good at first, but i cant stand it any more

  • Boob

So it seems that it is popular to suggest that John Locke, from the first episode of season 1, has been the Nemesis all along. I suppose that would explain why (most of the time) he is a completely different person, and of course…. he can walk. But I always chalked that up to the “mysterious powers of the island.”

Another interpretation is that the Nemesis only began inhabiting Locke’s body since Linus kills him, and they come back to the island. That being the as-yet-unexplained “loophole” (probably something to do with it having to be Linus who kills him, because he moved the island maybe? Or something).

Either way, I will not be one of the people tuning in tonight to watch, but I will be one of the people eagerly awaiting the torrent to be uploaded….

    • Nick

      Hey Boob,

Looks like a version of your second interpretation was the correct one. I think Nemesis dude started occupying his body when it returned (which now that we know he’s the smoke monster makes sense because he can only manifest in dead bodies). I think the loophole was finding a body to become that would have enough of a relationship with people who ARE able to kill Jacob, and then manipulating them to do it for them. It looks like Nemesis has been working angles to make Ben obey Locke (in the form of Alex) as well as building a lethal resentment within him towards Jacob (by feeling expendable and meaningless to him).

In true L O S T fashion though, once they answer one question they ask five more haha. The season opener was crazy!

      LOST = Metallica

      • Nick

Yeah it really is funny how they can’t just answer a question without asking way more! I don’t know how I feel about these parallel timelines, even by LOST standards its pretty confusing.

    • iolanach

      agreed 100%

  • Fufkin

    What’s going on?

  • SourDeez

I think my main problem with Lost is not so much the show itself, but the public’s obscenely overblown reactions to the show. It’s primetime television, yet people speak of it like it’s some kind of existential treatise on everything important in life. The plot twists are clever, I’ll give you that, but not genius. I’ve often heard people refer to the show as a “mindfuck”. You want a mindfuck? Take a substantial dose of LSD and attend a philosophy class.

    • Nick

I think you’re completely right with how LOST is often taken way too seriously. The problem with a lot of LOST fanatics is that they do put it on a pedestal of progressive intellectual thought, but at the end of the day its just a TV show… just as you said. In my opinion, though, its a really rad show; which is why I don’t mind writing a column about it.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Lost is not ‘ Metal’. Not one goddamn bit. If you want a Metal TV show, your ass needs to watch East Bound and Down.

    Kenny Powers aint no Pussy.

    Work Drugs.

    • Nick

Dude Eastbound and Down is the funniest show I have EVER seen. Have you watched all the out takes? Genius!

Also, if you’re on Twitter, you should follow Kenny Powers. His tweets are the best!

  • Eddie

As I lay dying, great band. Lost (?!) Are u kidding?!?!?! who cares about that lame show, or any of the other lame shows on! Comparing it to Master of Puppets is like comparing Kim Kardashean to an ardvark! WTF! Dukes of Hazzard, now there’s a great show!!

  • http://www.myspace.com/crocpodcast Noch

To all the haters: quit being pussies already, and fucking watch it.

    LOST FTW.

For those who are serious about the show and have a considerable talent at creative writing,I strongly suggest you visit this website: http://incrediblylost.proboards.com/index.cgi .

This link will lead you to an RPG board that’s the closest thing I’ve ever read to an official Lost script. Many canons are already part of the threads, and some are still available for you to take over.Originals are accepted too,as long as you can fill out an application form in detail.

For more details,PM me (username is Charlie Pace on the forum) or contact the administrators of the site.

Horns held up high to whoever had the idea of creating this column.I’d buy you a six pack if it wasn’t for the distance.

    • Nick

Wow this site looks amazing! Thank you for the link!

        You are quite welcome.

Feel free to join in the fun. ;)

  • teaches_of_peaches

    Hey Nick

I do feel that the whole “Nemesis vs. Jacob” ark is a little bit of a cop out, but at the same time, I actually don’t see any better alternatives to answering most of the questions. Unfortunately, I think that bringing these 2 new characters (and their story and battle) out of nowhere and into the forefront, puts everyone else sort of in the background. And as much as I hate Jack, Kate, and Sawyer – the whole thing feels a little unnatural.

Oddly, the only thing I’m curious about (and I think a few people are, after the season’s premiere) is the whereabouts of Christian Shepard. Both on the island and in the “alternate” reality (as many people have thought of it so far). I don’t know if you’ve seen any of the Lost “mobisodes”, but one of the first ones had Christian waking up in the jungle on the island, all disoriented, and followed Walt’s dog somewhere (if my memory serves me right).

    • Nick

Yeah I agree about how the Jacob vs. Nemesis seems like its kinda taking over the show. It is weird to me that they spent five long seasons developing characters with intricate relationships on another, only to introduce two new people at the very end of it who are going to be the “answer to it all” maybe. Kind of a bum out but hopefully they bring it all together.

Also, I’m really curious about Christian Shepard as well! I’ve seen the mobisode you’re talking about, and after seeing the last episode, can only assume that was the smoke monsters first body from Oceanic 815 that it manifested itself in. Considering there haven’t been to many dead people around (because the Hostiles burn their dead at sea) I wonder if Smokey immediately found itself manifesting in Christian Shepard because he was dead on arrival. What confuses me, though, is that Christian was seen off the Island as well, and even more confusing, is the introduction of the alternate reality in which his body seemingly disappears. I have no idea what they’re going for here either!

  • Medea

What has interested me the most since season 5 is the issue of the timelines. Faraday presented two ideas – first that whatever happened cannot be changed, and another idea that there can be “variables” that CAN change the timeline. I’m more inclined to believe that timelines can’t be changed, and that Jack’s detonation of the bomb didn’t affect the universe in which he was living. But after seeing the premiere, it seems that the writers are going down the alt. universe path. I’m most interested in seeing how this alternative universe ties in with the other one, if it does at all. “Parallel” universes shouldn’t affect one another in anyway, but it seems like they might here . . . which is why I’m confused.

It’s further complicated by what Juliet said: “It worked.” Did she mean that the bomb really did create an alternative universe?

The weird thing was seeing Desmond on the plane – and that Jack vaguely recognized him from somewhere. Then Desmond disappeared. I have no idea what was going on with that. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s episode!

  • Colin

Jack recognising Desmond may have been when they met at the stadium as Desmond was training for the boat race.

And where was Shannon? Boone said that he TRIED to get her out of her abusive relationship, so me must have failed and is going back to LA alone.

Goddamn, this show fucks with my head. And I love every minute of it.

    • http://www.myspace.com/crocpodcast Noch

Shannon is not in Season 6 since the actress wasn’t available at the time. The producers have said they would have loved to have her on the show, but since she has a full blown movie career now, they would have to do without her.

Quite a bummer but ay,I suppose this problem often happens with tv series. The actors have crazy schedules.
