JIM FLORENTINE (OF THAT METAL SHOW) SIGNS WITH FAVORED NATIONS

Friday, February 5th, 2010 at 3:20pm by

L.A. Guns (the Tracii Guns version) were just the first signing in an apparent change of direction for Steve Vai’s formerly shredtastic Favored Nations label. According to a press release, the new Jibboom imprint of Favored Nations has just wrapped up negotiations with comedian / That Metal Show co-host Jim Florentine. Florentine is perhaps best known for his characters Special Ed and Bobby Fletcher on Comedy Central’s cult-favorite TV show Crank Yankers, so unsurprisingly his first release for the label — Terrorizing Telemarketers Vol. 5 — will be in the vein of Crank Yankers / Jerky Boys style prank call recordings.

I’ve now lived without a TV for over four years so I haven’t seen That Metal Show. Our own Corey Mitchell didn’t like it all, but judging by the comments on that post most of you seemed to dig it. As if you needed an invitation… please share your thought about That Metal Show / Jim Florentine with us in the comments section.

Here’s a clip of one of Florentine’s calls. I’m not sure whether this appeared on Terrorizing Telemarketers Vol. 1-4 or whether it’s new, but it should give you a pretty good idea of what’s in store for Vol. 5.

That metal show? More like “that vintage 70′s rock band that noone in their right mind would consider metal outside of 1981″ I think they mentioned metallica once on the show and thats the only true metal band to ever get coverage. They talk more about Tesla ansd make lame jokes than the do metal. And yes, i understand its on Vh1 classic, but there is such a thing as classic METAL(emphasis on metal and not pre-glam BS) that would in fact have decent ratings. And all the hosts are such douchebags i cant stand to even watch the show on a passing glimpse

    • Discipleofthewatch

Naw, they have Motorhead and Judas Priest and Yngwie Malmsteen. It’s a cool show; I’ve seen it a few times. They had Lemmy on.

      • stu1

Yep. And they talk about Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax all the time. Hatebreed were guests not all that long ago. They had Heaven and Hell on last year. They don’t cover a lot of super modern or super heavy shit, but they cover a lot of “metal.” Maybe you could watch it more often before you decide what the shows about?
And Eddie Trunk is pretty cool and INCREDIBLY knowledgeable about metal.

I eatched the entire first season. idk why i did. even if they did touch apon the big four, the shows format blew. But whatever to each his own

          • stu

So which is it: they don’t cover enough ‘real metal” for you, or you don’t like the format of the show?

  • iolanach

Never saw the show, but Florentine is hilarious.

  • Joshie

I think the show’s a lot of a crap with a few good spots every now and then, but not good enough to actually continue watching said show.

  • weedking

It sucks ass. It’s like a Douchebag version of “The View”. I can’t stand it. Eddie Trunk needs to be kicked in the testicles. Hard.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Does Jim Florentine play in Ibanez guitar of sorts?

If not how is he on Favored Nations??

  • Unkle Paul

Florentine is the man! Check out ‘meet the creeps’. THATS what Jim is about, much funnier than crank yankers. Unkle Paul and Ol teddie schekler love you Jim. Now go home and get your fucking shinebox!

    • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Not nice and if you’re gonna quote Mob movies do so with somethin better than “Good Fellas’.

      • Facebook User

Why? Goodfellas is the best mob movie ever.

        • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Yep, thats usually what most ppl who dont know good Mob movies say.

  • You Don’t Know Me

I saw an episode of That Metal Show. I think I lost braincells in the process.

  • Ziltoid

“That Metal Show” is seriously one of the worst things on TV.

    Proof:

The assholes love Nirvana and Slipknot, but no Celtic Frost for them. Idiots.

    • Dave

      Jesus christ.

    • stu

First off, it’s the guys in Slayer, not the guys from the TV show, who diss Celtic Frost. I also get the impression that Kerry probably has an issue with one of the guys in Celtic Frost. And not that I should be surprised by this, but are you one of those “metalheads” that hates Nirvana?

    • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

This Range is now cleared hot…….

And what are some of the Modern genius underground Truu, Kvlt, TV Shows that you Ziltoid watch?

      Please goddamn enlighten us.

      • Ziltoid

I only watch shows recorded in black and white, because that’s as grim as it gets. The Honeymooners is an excellent show.

        • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

          I stand Defeated and wanting….

  • Facebook User

I think that VH1 Classic lets them interview people like Yngwie and Queensryche is cool enough for me. We can complain all we want, but it’s better than NOT having a show covering hard rock.

My only bitch is that Jim Florentine always wears those new, wannabe vintage band t-shirts. That’s just my own hang up.

    • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

      Agree with both points.

  • Fish

It could be better, but It’s nice to have a show about metal on tv instead of more reality show shit or 30 minutes of Black Eyed Peas favorite videos.

Vince, my boy, go back and re-read those comments from my article of over a year ago. You wrote, Our own Corey Mitchell didn’t like it all, but judging by the comments on that post most of you seemed to dig it.

I actually counted up the tally: 2 people liked TMS, 16 hated it. 16!!! Not even close.

Unfortunately, it has not gotten better at all in the last year. I guess they don;t read MetalSucks — either that, or they could give a rat’s ass about my opinion.

  • DustintheWind

I have nothing but respect for the hosts’ knowledge of metal (especially Trunk), but the show sucks. They don’t talk about anything post 1991. And most of what they do talk about is very mundane.. Yeah we all know Metallica, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are important bands, get the fuck over it and talk about something else….

    • stu

      It’s a show on Vh1 Classic.

  • Brian Roach

I don’t think the show is bad, anything metal related is better than nothing, but I think they should ditch the other two clowns and just let Eddie Trunk host it. Yes, Trunk is a windbag, but he knows his stuff, and how to do a serious interview, I just feel like the other guys get in the way, but that’s my 2 cents. I watch the show if I happen to catch it, but don’t go out of my way to see it. It could be a really good show, but not with Florentine and that other clown on it.

  • Mr. Parker

It’s like a magazine, you might get one or two good articles every so often, but usually sucks.

  • ITTOA666

It’s still somehow better than scenefuckers ball, so I’ll watch that metal show. It could be worse.

  • You Don’t Know Me

The one episode I saw was like when you argue with your friends over which Metallica albums are worth listening to. Yeah, it’s interesting to hear everyone’s opinion but it’s not interesting enough to air on tv. There was a whole segment of “Dude, OLD Metallica is so much better than NEW Metallica.” I shit thee not. I’ve heard more substance in a 2 minute interview on Headbanger’s Ball than in a 30 minute episode of That Metal Show.
