2010 IS THE YEAR OF THE BLACK RAINBOW FOR COHEED & CAMBRIA

coheed - year of the black rainbow screencapI long ago gave up trying to keep track of the crazy batshit saga that the lyrics of Coheed & Cambria’s songs tell. I just like the music, mmmkay?

Speaking of the music, Coheed have a new song called “The Broken” currently streaming on their website (take that, MySpace!). The song comes from Coheed’s forthcoming album Year of the Black Rainbow which comes out April 13th and is the first Coheed release to feature ex-Dillinger Escape Plan drummer Chris Pennie.

I like the song. It’s got some pretty nifty fretwork and it’s catchy in a way that’s typical of Coheed & Cambria. I couldn’t get into 2007′s Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow as much as I did 2005′s Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (what a fuckig mouthful) but the former did have a few really solid tracks.

Don’t ask me what this new album is about and how it relates to the overall story because I don’t know and I don’t care.

I preferred 2007′s Good Apollo (fuck typing the whole title), more than 2005′s offering. They still can’t top In Keeping Secrets, in my book.

    • Uglymicrowave

coheed is the most metal non-metal band….and this album is actually a prequel to all there other albums…second stage turbine blade is actually the second album in the saga

  • FuckJuggaBlows

People or on opposite sides of the fence with these guys. I’m on the side that fucking loves them, everything about them. The music, the story, the members. I saw them last on the NWFT tour, and their live show reminds me of the some classic metal showyness. They’ve really evolved their sound.

  • Dave D

I like all their previous works, but lets just say I really hope this is not a representation of the rest of this album. This song is too chaotic and has no direction, and almost none of their signature sound. Not a big fan of this one.

    • Patrick

I listened to the full album, and i hate it. The entire thing is chaotic, there are a few spots where you dont know if you’re listening to music or random instruments crashing into each other. Claudio’s lyrics at points are undecipherable, moreso than normal(i personally liked the balance he once had where you werent sure what he was saying). I have noticed over the last three albums an increase of grandness(or epicness) in the sound, culminating in YOTBR, almost to a point where it doesnt sound like SSTB or IKSSE3 coheed at all. Im the type of coheed fan that will listen to all their albums in succession, but i was really let down by this one. Hopefully ill grow to love it, as i did with Good Apollo Vol. 1

This album is a prequel. Set to take place in the early years of Coheed and Cambria Killgannon’s relationship. It will go into how the IRO-bots were made and why, how Wilhem rose to power. And why Coheed was infected with the Monstar virus, and his kids with the Sinstar virus that eventually cause the cooling of the Keywork and the destruction of Heaven’s Fence.

…. I’m kind of a sucker for this shit. I love following this story line. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that Claudio Sanchez wrote a 352-page novel to go along with this album. Seeing as how it’s the end of the saga. Well, the last album was the “end” and this one is the prequel. As I already stated.

    • FuckJuggaBlows

Seriously, aside from the music, there is much to nerd out on over this band. Another great aspect that separates them.

      • http://www.myspace.com/jay234t Brutal Jay

Oh, I fucking love it. I got the Neverender box set for my birthday and have had the DVDs in constant rotation in my player since I got it. Because of that I kinda brushed up on the story again, cause I haven’t looked at it in a while. Plus, I’m anticipating the new album.

Also, in the little “forward” thing in the Neverender set, he hints at a theatrical release for the story so.. Lets hope that happens.

    • SonOF

I love their music as well, but can’t get into the whole deep story they have going on. I think the creativity in this band (especially from Claudio) is just mind-blowing, the fact that they can write amazing music AND have this huge backstory, AND the comic book, AND artwork and whatever else. Just great artists in general, but I pretty much stick to the music.

  • FuckJuggaBlows

I agree its a little less structured, but it reminds me of their NWFT title track the way it opens. I can understand everyone who fell in love with the old Coheed, but their new shit just makes me love their more metal side.

  • You Don’t Know Me

I read that it’s supposed to be a prequel to the whole Armory Wars storyline. Whether that means it’s actually Part 1 of the whole story (they started the story at Part 2 on their first album) or it takes place BEFORE Part 1, I have no idea.

    • heartskull

my understanding is this is part one and claudio’s prize fighter cd is before part one or something like that. it features a few of the recurring characters from the amory wars storyline.

  • Kye

I’m always going to like In Keeping Secrets the best. That CD was fucking brilliant.

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

im a huge fan of these guys, even though trying to comprehend the storyline makes my brain hurt. i actually had the exact opposite problem as vince though, i couldnt really get into good apollo I (2005), and IMO good apollo II (2007) is their best, i just dont think theres a bad song on that album…okay radio bye bye kinda pisses me off but other than that it rocks. and the chorus of end complete even sounds like losing time by DT, so bonus points there. if they continue on that path, im very excited 4 black rainbow, tho calling back to in keeping secrets wouldnt be a bad thing either…

  • ITTOA666

    Cant wait.

  • Sammy

I just can’t get past the weird falsetto voice.

    • SourDeez

Me neither, I actually like everything else about this band but that chipmunk voice makes their music impossible for me to listen to.

    • SonOF

I swear it grows on you. And there is no way I would sacrifice listening to a band that is this good because I was a little turned off by the vocals. After a while, I started to enjoy his vocals and just think of them as unique. C&C are also one of the best bands I have ever seen live, up there with Tool, Opeth, and System of a Down.

  • builtforsin

Fuck all you queers supporting this post.

    That is all.

    • Kevlard

This band fucking sucks. Why is this on MS? Shame on you all.

    • stu1

I see you’re clearly another one of America’s great minds.

      • builtforsin

Please list all the other HOT HOT Hot Topic bands you listen to, I would like to criticize them as well.

        • jackattack

          1. Eat a dick.

          2. Die.

        • SonOF

Just because C&C are popular (and commercially successful), doesn’t mean they are shitty, or a “Hot Topic band.”

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Sterner/1335958279 Andrew Sterner

Ahem….I bought a slayer shirt from HT….Are THEY a hot topic band? For that matter, define “Hot Topic Band”. I’m not sure what the hell you’re trying to say there.

  • Shingo

If this song is an indication of what to expect from their new album, then Chris Pennie did this band a great service. I can’t stand Coheed, but this song gives me hope that they might be able to put out some quality music.

    • SonOF

I think it’s funny that only because Chris Pennie (a real metal drummer!) is now drumming for the band that you claim that they may have some credibility. Honestly, the drumming on this new tune doesn’t sound all that much different from their other stuff – the drumming was always good. You make it sound as if getting the former drummer from DEP saved the band and drastically changed their sound; like he turned them in the right direction.

“Now that the drummer from DEP is with Coheed and Cambria, I can give them a LITTLE credit, since he is so cool and metal and all. I won’t lose any scene points, right?” :/

  • DemonicLemming

Strangely enough for me, I actually like this band quite a bit. Not enough to really listen to while other people are around, but, they’re good.

  • http://lavidastrangiato.blogspot.com/ Jake Strangiato

Coheed and Cambria is my third favorite band after Metallica and Rush, and this new track slams. Already got the deluxe “Year of the Black Rainbow” on pre-order, although I do think it’s a little odd that MetalSucks is covering them.

    • SonOF

C&C, in my experience, are one of those non-metal bands that tons of metalheads like. I assume it is the progressive nature of their music, but I’m not sure. Other not-really-metal bands I have found that lots of metalheads seem to like: Muse, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky…I think there is a lot of crossover between shoegaze, post-rock, ambient rock into doom metal, stoner, and prog sometimes falls into this mix. So it’s not weird to see people that dig Isis, Pelican, Yob, etc. to move to Cult of Luna, Russian Circles, Mouth of the Architect, then Mogwai, EITS, Maserati, etc. A metalhead may like the progressive nature of say an Opeth, then move to a less heavy Porcupine Tree or Dream Theater (or Agalloch or whatever), and then end up enjoying Coheed and Cambria. That’s just my opinion, and a decent amount of people I know have similar taste and have had a similar experience.

      • SourDeez

I would also put The Mars Volta in that category.

    • builtforsin

      LAWL

      After Metalilica, SWEET.

      • http://lavidastrangiato.blogspot.com/ Jake Strangiato

What can I say, I am a huge Metallica fan. BlahblahblahselloutblahblahStAngerblahblahLarssucks I don’t care, those first four albums are amazing and will always have a place in my heard. Also, good post SonOF.

  • M.

I just can’t seem to get into them because of the vocals. They write some damn good music.

    • SourDeez

Same here. I’ve heard a lot of Rush comparisons, which are sort of valid. And I’m all about Rush, but for some reason Geddy Lee’s vocals don’t bother me while I find Claudio Sanchez’s vocals intolerable.

  • Killer Kovarik

I love them, From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness was better then No World For Tomorrow.

  • brandonmetal

isn’t this emo? i’m not going to give their myspace page the luxury of another hit, while pausing the excellent new Rotting Christ album to find out.

    • SonOF

The only thing “emo” about the band is the fact that Claudio sings in a high register. If you can accept that, you are in for some quality progressive shit.

      • http://lavidastrangiato.blogspot.com/ Jake Strangiato

Claudio’s vocals haven’t really even been “emo” since “In Keeping Secrets”. All that smoking and acid reflux disease lowered his range pretty significantly. Just listen to “Time Consumer”, then “The Broken”. Definite change.

  • Meekal

I hate to burst your bubble, but :
It’s also on streaming their myspace.

  • Canucklehead

I’m on the fence with this band. Musically they’re not that bad, i just hate Claudio’s voice. I hate the fuck out of it. I have to take it in small doses. Plus, how much acid do these guys do? They’ve created, arguably, the stupidest mythology ever for their band. These guys have more in common with a poorly written L.Ron Hubbard novel than anything even resembling metal.

    • SonOF

To create that whole mythology AND write all this music AND comic book artwork, etc. Claudio must spend like 90% of his day in Coheed and Cambria fairy land. He is quite the weird dude, it seems.

  • http://URI Will

    coheed and cambria rule!!!

  • DustintheWind

Fuck yes, best band in music today… I agree with all that hate Claudio’s voice though, cookie monster growls and pig squeals sound SO much better

    • SonOF

Coheed and Cambria with extreme vocals…that might actually work. I’d like to hear it at least.

    • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

      No……They dont.

      And I cant stand C&C.

  • Sean Williams

Ugh, Coheed is so fucking boring. They have one good song, and will only ever have one, which is Welcome Home.

    • SonOF

What? There most poppy single (although admittedly good) is “their only good song?”

I think you can call Coheed a lot of things, but I don’t think “boring” is one of them.

      • Sean Williams

I have Keeping Secrets, and my god every song is slow and plodding and has absolutely no substance. I haven’t been able to ever make it through the entire album.

  • :f pete

woo chris pennie. possibley some mathy stuff on this album? hope so.

  • Fufkin

    “It’s like a black mirror. “

  • http://vague-news.blogspot.com Clarky Cat

I’m very indifferent to this band. Claudio’s voice is the biggest factor in this. I also have a few friends that are mad for the story that goes with the music and have the dragonfly tattooed on them. They’re quite heavily on drugs so I suppose that sort of stuff resonates with them better. That certainly doesn’t help my opinion of Coheed.
