SCION NO LABEL NEEDED CONTEST: THE POLLS ARE OPEN!

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 at 12:30pm by

Last month we told you about the Scion No Label Needed Contest & Series, which would allow one lucky unsigned band to win, well, just about anything and everything an unsigned band could ever possibly want. Seriously, this contest is amazing.

Well, the time for submissions has past, and the judges have now selected twenty finalists for the contest. You can listen to all of these unsigned bands, and cast your vote for who you think should win, here. Two of them, Iron Thrones and Iris Divine, are even bands we’ve written about before! But all of these groups are really talented, and would make worthy winners. This is an awesome way to discover some great unsigned bands, at least one of whom could very well represent the future of metal.

All the details after the jump.

  • Voting runs from now until March 8, 2010.
  • You can vote once per day per IP address.
  • The public’s vote accounts for 20% of the total vote.
  • The remainder of the vote belongs to renowned producer (Lamb of God, Clutch, Suicide Silence) Machine (who will produce an EP for the winning band), the members of Shadows Fall (who will mentor the winners), the editors of Metal Insider, Metal Injection, and MetalSucks, and a collection of managers, agents, writers and artists.

Go here to check out all the bands and cast your vote.

If you’re not voting on Iron Thrones, you’re voting against all that is right and true in this world.

    • Jo

      damn striaght

    • http://myspace.com/obeydarklord mr_Izan

agreed. but i haven’t even seen the list. but iron thrones is very worthy of winning this contest IMO.

    • SonOF

      They are pretty damn good.

    • g

They remind me of Swallow The Sun, a lot. Lorus is okay too. Electric Horsemen are alright, but I’m not really into stoner metal.

Iris Divine sounds pretty terrible though.

    • Unkle Paul

Iron Thrones for the win mother fuckers

  • builtforsin

If you don’t play that made up word bullshit “djent” or w/e the fuck its called, you have no chance, MS editors (mid-20s slackers lucky enough to talk advertisers into paying them) are voting.

GET ON THE BAND WAGON FUCKERS.

    • DishHead

Yeah, a “made-up” word. Like every single other word in the language. It’s just that this one is only a few years old (it’s also onomatopoeia, belonging to the only group of words that has some inherent link to the idea they represent).

For fans of Iron Thrones, they have a forum in need of members: http://www.ironthrones.com/forum/index.php

All those bands are just seemingly generic. No Innovation whatsoever, but I guess if you are gunning for this kind of contest it fits the bill. It stinks.

    • SonOF

Why do you assume only a generic band would be “gunning for this contest?” Hell, any unsigned metal band in their right mind would want to win this package. And don’t tell me all unsigned bands have to suck, that is a terrible assumption as well.

I actually just listened to two (only TWO thus far) and they didn’t even sound the same in the least (Iron Thrones and We Are the Romans)…so unless I got extremely lucky and picked the only two divergent bands, I doubt that all the bands are generic or sound the same.

      • no-ghost

your post below you just compared a band to the red chord. Im not starting a fight, if you read the prize its just eh. IMO of course so it could be complete shit, I just don’t see the prize being anything of total value besides the studio time. PLUS THIS IS SPONSORED BY SCION! TOYOTA! I guess that doesnt matter. I just dont like the bands. hahaha

        • http://www.metalinsider.net Dan Metal Insider

Just “eh”? HAHA, do you KNOW how much it costs to produce, mix and master a record, let alone with Machine? Or to hire an art company, or a press company, or a radio company, etc?

          • no-ghost

Yeah I have a rough idea, going through those things as I type this. Its a shit load of money. Im not saying that Im even close to being “right” in this argument. I was just making an opinion. Bands like the ones on the list need the PRIZE i guess. Just keep on producing more generic soundalike bands. I d love the studio time personally, that d be great. no biggie right?

    • Marty Jannetty

Yeah none of these bands are really that great. The Lorus band reminds me of an instrumental version of Dog Fashion Disco, but less wacky.

    • http://raiseyerfists.wordpress.com raiseyerfists

All the innovative bands that would’ve made it this far in the contest are already scooped up by labels.

The bands here are all good at what they do, but the dozen tracks I randomly listened to are all deathcore, melodeath, or post-metally stuff. Again, not that that’s bad, but nothing stands out. And it makes sense — a huge corporation is behind it, they’re gonna go with a band that will appeal to a lot of people so the company looks good. And Toyota DOES need to look good right now, after recalling how many millions of cars?

  • SonOF

I was confused as hell for a moment. I saw the band “We are the Romans” on there and was surprised, as I had heard stuff from that band, and not only was it horrible (pop-hardcore, what the kids call screamo), but they were a signed band.

Did some research, and realized that the band I was thinking of is “We Came as Romans.”

“We Are the Romans” actually sound pretty cool, and they are heavy as shit. However, they have a name that is almost identical to a REALLY SHITTY BAND. But I guess as the character Michael Bolton says in Office Space (in reference to changing his name which is the same as an awful pop singer), “Why should I change? He’s the one who sucks.”

So “We are the Romans” does not equal “We Came as Romans”….I may actually be voting for “We Are the Romans,”…sound a bit like The Red Chord, but definitely cool stuff.

  • Matt

Vote We Are the Romans, best band on the contest for sure.

  • SonOF

Looking at the package though, much of it really isn’t that useful or practical. Photo shoot/new wardrobe? These aren’t American Idol artists, 90% of these bands don’t care about that. The “advice” from all the stars in the industry is cool, but advice can only do so much for you. It’s all about personal drive and smarts to get ahead. Getting your EP done by Machine is obviously the coolest perk. I think new equipment, new transportation (van or bus, etc.) would be far more useful than some of the other nonsense. I guess the marketing/promotion/site retooling is useful as well, but the whole thing seems sort of half-assed. Not that if I was in a band I wouldn’t want to win all of it, though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

yeah i would pass on the affliction/dragonfly shopping spree. recording with machine though, now that’s literally priceless. whoever wins will have an absolutely killer “demo” to shop around or sell as their EP.

    • no-ghost

Im glad we can agree haha. Its like saying a blowjob is a blowjob when your eyes are closed. sure Ill take it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

we got a call about this contest but didn’t make it to the final 20. the silver lining is now we won’t have to pay taxes on our “prizes”

  • Kye

So here goes my determining process. I’m basically just going to list thoughts on each song as they come to me.

8 Infinite Suns – Not terribly bad, but not really striking a chord with me either.

Bled for Glory – Also not bad, but still not blowing me away. Kind of rocking an All That Remains/Autumn Offering vibe, but I like it more than most of either of their material. I dig it, but there aren’t really any surprises here.

Brotherhood – It’s hard to stay focused listening to this. Far too generic for me.

Dark Vital Flames – I’m digging this more than the others so far. I like the guitar work. It’s not mind blowing, but it’s pretty cool. Sections of the song drag, but when it picks up I enjoy it.

Destroy the Opposition – I’m judging a book by its cover…hopefully I’m wrong. Oh look at that, I wasn’t. Thank you for having a track that is randomly twice as loud as the others. This isn’t even good for deathcore. Next.

Dethlehem – I like this. Except the clean vocals. I’m sure I could get used to them, but on first listen, they’re kinda irritating. Their placement and concept are good, I just don’t like the execution. Other than that, this is good stuff.

Discidium – Meh. Reminds me of Pantera. I don’t like Pantera.

Electric Horsemen – Sounds about how I would expect based on their name and look. It’s not bad. I like the vocalist quite a bit.

Falling to Pieces – Nice melodic riffing that occurs a couple of times. This song isn’t anything amazing, but I’d listen to it again. The breakdown type sections aren’t that great.

Giants Among Us – This is horribly recorded. Other than that, not too shabby. The random symphonic stuff(I’m not even sure if it can be called that) is kind of uneeded, but doesn’t really take away from it either. Kind of reminds me of The Esoteric. The breakdown at the end is atrocious, but I like the rest.

Hammerlord – This just gets a big meh from me. I don’t hate it, but I’d never listen to it again. The vocalist is annoying.

Hemoptysis – I like the beginning quite a bit. And the vocals are nice. This is some quality stuff. The melodic parts are pretty sick too. They keep things fairly varried throughout the song. There’s nothing terribly amazing about the gallop riffing, but it gets the job done and still sounds good.

Iris Divine – Metalsucks says they’ve written about these guys before. I guess I missed that article. I really like the way this starts. This is by far the most interesting a song has been so far. I’m not really like the song once the vocals start, which is sad. When it picks up, it gets much better though. This seems like a growing thing.

Iron Thrones – This is the only band I’d heard of prior to this little venture. There’s a reason for that. This song, as well as the rest of the album it appears on, is fantastic. They’ve got a lot of similarities to Opeth, but they manage to differentiate themselves enough that they don’t make me want to just go listen to Blackwater Park.

Lorus – Pretty awesome track. My only real gripe is that I’m not huge into strictly instrumental bands. This is definitely one of the standout tracks in this contest though.

Orwell – Whoever produced the drums for this should never be let near recording equipment again. Other than that, this isn’t too bad. It reminds me of something, but I can’t quite figure out what.

Proven – That HAS to be Jamey Jasta. Pretty by the books Melodic Metalcore. Not horrible, but not getting my vote either.

Reciprocal – There was a time I would have proclaimed these guys to be gods. I’ve kind of moved on from this kind of stuff in recent years. This is a definitely good listen though.

Scorched Earth Policy – Hmmm…this is interesting. Not really my thing, but I can see people digging these guys.

We Are the Romans – No wonder the Roman Empire collapsed. Fuck this. Hard.

So yea, as expected, my vote to Iron Thrones. I’m kind of disappointed(but not really surprised) that a contest with this much potential features a large number of bands that don’t really have much to offer.

  • DecrystallizingReason

ORWELL!!! If you’re not sold on that song, check out the whole album streaming on thei Myspace blog – these dudes have found a great balance between hooks, melody, and brutality. Great stuff.

  • joshkid

just checked out Iron Thrones on myspace and HOT DAMN! these guys are GOOOOOD!!!
    Totally Opeth-esque! Definitely a winner.

  • nick

Orwell, Iron Thrones, and Lorus are the only real standout bands in this group. I especially liked Lorus and voted for them. If you liked them too check out Lye By Mistake. Read about them here on one of the top ten of the year lists. Just awesome heavy fusion.

I could never understand how so many people have an aversion to instrumental bands. Are people so far removed from actual instruments that they really need the vocals to pay attention? It’s just odd.

  • joe

If you feel like checking out more iron thrones, they have their entire album “visions of light” available on their website as a free download. Definitely worth checking out. Self produced, well crafted, great shit.
