“BARK AT THE MOON”: SHADOWS FALL GO ALL GUS VAN SANT ON YOUR ASS

Friday, February 12th, 2010 at 4:30pm by

Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot remake of Psycho was a massive failure of an experiment, a ridiculous exercise that could never, ever replace Alfred Hitchcock’s original. On the other hand, Shadows Fall’s new video for “Bark at the Moon,” which was directed by David Brodsky and is basically a shot-for-shot recreation of Ozzy Osbourne’s original video, is AWESOME, because clearly, no one was taking this shit seriously. That’s not to say that the band’s love of Ozzy or 80s metal is ironic – if you know their music, you know that Shadows Fall’s love of 80s metal is 100% unironic – but, y’know, they clearly had a lot of fun with this one. It’s kind of like what Killswitch Engage did with their “Holy Diver” video, but taken to a whole other level.

Plus, a dreadlocked werewolf? Classic.

Who wants to place bets that this is already a million times better than the new Wolfman movie that opens today?

And in case for some reason you’ve never seen it, Ozzy’s original video is after the jump.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

    Fucking Awesome! love it.

  • pigchop

cool, cool – but what is the point of this basically note-for-note redux? And the video…what is the point of this all?

    • Sammy

The point is to have fun in tribute.

      • pigchop

Yeah, I can dig that, but still – fuck with it some – have some real fun with it.

exactly. when bands stray to far from a classic, it just ruins it.for example: any song on the pantera metal hammer tribute.

Never cared about this band, ever. It’s like, why was this cover made??

    • Facebook User

because they’ve been going at it for 10 years and they’re really tight with the whole boston metal scene, with killswitch.

that whole area has had a huge impact on metal, and paved the way for..well.. im just going to stop ehre and let this sink in

  • Sammy

I’m still waiting for the day Fair’s malodorous mane takes some poor front-row schmuck’s eye out.

  • GuuGuu

this is EXCELLENT. Bring on the “Critical Mass” tribute video too! That shit is classic too!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWFhlYfqj4Q

    • Facebook User

      i love nuclear assault

Worst cover ever. Brian Fair is the WORST fucking singer I have ever heard. His voice truly does hold the band back from being even bigger than what they are now.

Killswitch Engage’s cover of “Holy Diver” was actually a very good cover, Howards voice fits the song and the cover was done in the Killswitch style of playing.

This cover changes nothing and just uses Brian Fairs shitty voice. He just cant fucking sing. He cant sing worth a FUCK.

    • Fong Chung

LOL!!! This is very true. He is like a bad Chuck Billy/James Hetfield rip off. They ruined a Cro Mags cover, and he failed at trying to sing it. Better yet this band should call it fucking quits. They’ve worn out their welcome.

  • KilledByDeath

Why wouldn’t he at least try to sing. Pretty much every one can sing with some training. So go and get that training. Not to insult tho.

  • Sly

    I think it’s pretty cool!
Fair may not have the best singing voice, but he at least stays in tune, and the band pretty mych nails it musically.
The video is pretty cool, nice tribute to a classic!
All in all, thumbs (or horns) up!

    • nick

He is not in tune at all. He could have a pitch pipe for a voice box and would still be out of tune. Of course it’s not much worse than seeing Ozzy live these days. Now there’s a guy that should hang it up.

  • familyghost

cut your dreds douchebag!!they look retarded!!WHo0o0o0o0o0 WHeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • DustintheWind

Once again i will implore everyone to check out Strung Out’s version of Bark at the Moon, way better than Shitty’s Fall

    • Kuranes

Wayne Campbell: Shitty Beatles? Are they any good?
      Tiny: They suck!
Wayne Campbell: Then it’s not just a clever name.

  • mike

    huge fail!
a million times worse then the new WOLFMAN movie!

    • Mike

      seriously its benicio del toro

  • Tonberry

    Vocals ruin it.

  • The Ghost of D. Boon

I fucking lost it at the 2:00 mark where it does the dramatic zoom on the drummer doing a stick-spin. Hilarious

I’ve never care much for Shadow’s Fall but I gotta admit this was an ok version. I do have to agree that the vocals ruins the song. The other band member did great with the music and I have to say the video was fucking awesome.

  • ITTOA666

I’m pretty surprised that this cover was actually good.

  • steverazor

That was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen! I love Jake E Lee and Phil Soussan – the Randy Castillo drum stick twirl was awesome. Brian Fair and his dreadlocked werewolf was very metal and very respectful of the Ozzman. Some of the best times I ever had were listening to Ozzy and seeing him live in the 80′s. The puffy, victorian-era sleeves were a nice touch. Very sad that Soussan and Castillo passed away some time ago. they were a terrific rhythm section. Jake is semi-retired and rebuilds muscle cars I think. Read Ozzy’s new autobiography, it is a fun read.

  • steverazor

Ooops, my mistake. Is that Carmine Appice on drums in the video? Aldridge played drums on the studio version. Bob Daisley bass. Soussan and Castillo came on for The Ultimate Sin. I believe they were also part of the touring cycle for Bark At The Moon. I must have been pretty wasted my memory is not the best during this era. Jake wrote some awesome songs for this album. Younger metal generation paying homage to the masters is a good thing, everyone lighten up and have fun with it.

  • Dan

Seriously, I don’t think you guys have ever posted a music video that WASN’T directed by David Brodsky.

My favorite Jake E. Lee performance is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JBzWZq4fXg

  • Who Gives A Damn

Everything but the vocals was cool w/ this version.
