WHO THE FUCK IS PROGRAMMING THIS FESTIVAL?

Friday, February 12th, 2010 at 2:35pm by

Here’s the poster for this summer’s Sweden Rock Festival. You tell me what’s wrong with this picture:

Are people really like “Man, I can’t wait to see Slayer and Mastodon and Suicidal Tendencies… and Rick Springfield!”? Do we think there are a lot of Swedish Behemoth  and Watain fans who are also totally stoked to check out BTO? I guess I can see some of the over-forty set being just as excited to sing along with “Jesse’s Girl” as they are “Round and Round,” but if you’re the kind of person afflicted with that particular virus of 80s nostalgia, I don’t know what the hell you do while Danzig are on-stage. Grab a beer and wait for W.A.S.P., I guess?

Your thoughts?

-AR

  • Spanky

    Fuckin SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Christian

My thoughts? WHERE THE FUCK IS THE NEW VEIL OF MAYA SONG YOU FUCKHEADS. IDK WHY THEY DIDNT JUST POST IT ON THEIR MYSPACE BECAUSE YOU GUYS CAN FUCKING KILL YOURSELVES.

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

It’s coming later, dickhole. It’s not like VOM are that fucking important to get pissed over.

    • kelfro

Are you just bored, or do you really like VOM that much?

    • Zoker

      Curl up and die.

    • SonOF

The only worthwhile “Veil of Maya” is the Cynic song. Get outta here, Sumerian fanboy.

  • Kye

Say what you want, but that’s a pretty killer lineup regardless of the filler.

  • DemonicLemming

Slayer, Stratovarius, Opeth, and Alestorm at the same concert?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-Showalter/100000592087843 Anthony Showalter

      Nazareth +1!!!

      • GuuGuu

Aldo Nova? “Blood on the Bricks”? Really?

  • kelfro

Strange mix, but some awesome bands of different genres (bigelf, Behemoth). It’s way better than any festival in the US.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Zink/1457523384 Andrew Zink

WHY WONT YOU JUST TELL US THAT THEY DIDNT SEND YOU THE SONG? :[

  • dudeman

guns n’ roses and danzig are swedish?? slayer, opeth and behemoth are rock?? what the hell is going on?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-John-Crispen/100000169530540 Jason John Crispen

bachman and turner, but no overdrive?????? c’mon!

    • wormdrive66

      ha

      • Me

it’s probably an acoustic set, then.

        • Austin

          fuck yes!!!

  • wormdrive66

Aldo Nova…. Now there is a name you dont hear every day.

    • deanerhead

Blood on the Bricks! Börk, börk, börk!

  • Zoker

Maybe there’s something wrong with me but I can count only two good bands on that poster… and one of these is not Slayer…

    • DemonicLemming

Clean glasses/contacts and try again. I count 4, not counting Slayer/GnR (because I despise both bands).

      • Zoker

You gotta help me here cause I can see only the one starting with M and the one starting with O…

        • DemonicLemming

          Stratovarius, Alestorm.

        • Heavy Metal

          Steel Panther, W.A.S.P.

  • wormdrive66

Bachman & Turner??? What happened to Overdrive?

  • Limmy Killmeister

Sweden Rock Festival is a pretty big thing here in Sweden amongst all metalheads (old as young). And they do specialize in older rock bands (kinda like your Rocklahoma thingy). But in order to sell tickets and so on they need to book bands like Slayer, Watain and Opeth as well… But GN’R, don’t fuckin’ ask me why.

  • Hooch

i saw Bachman and Cummings a few years ago and they put on a really good show, secondly check out their song friends of mine, trippiest shit

  • Shinaain

I freaking love stuff like this and it kills me that if I want this kind of variety at a festival, I have to go to Europe or Scandanavia to get it because they’re more open-minded than American audiences. Really, this is only slightly more extreme than the variety offered at some of the summer street festivals here in the States, like City Stages or pick any iteration of Big Day Out anywhere. At those events, rock has it’s own stage, rap, country, whatever, have their own, and people move around to check out everything – It’s just that truly extreme music is much less likely to be represented at one of those. Hooray for eclecticism!

But then I was one of the few people who thought Coheed and Cambria opening for Slipknot was an inspired choice in booking. So what? Come and get me.

    • http://Tommy vulgardisplay21

I agree totaly, I would love if americans were not as close minded as we are. It would be great to see what kind of crowd would show up , just to converse with people and m,aybe turn them on to “our” music and perhaps get turned on to theirs……Woodstock 99 was the last show in the States that I ahve been too like that and aside from the Riots byassholes, it was great to explore other people’s cultures , and then have them get pummeled by Metallica and the like

  • Alex_P

This is actually a pretty sweet festival. Opeth, Danzig, Slayer, Mastodon? Damn, that shit’s dope.

  • luisypoo

europe is known for having “diverse” festivals, so get over it. ive been to quite a few and its a great time for everyone. not to mention that these festivals have tens of thousands of more fans then you’re ozzfests, and mayhems, and warped tours

    • luisypoo

      your*

    • stu1

Because they’re destination fests, not traveling.

  • brian roach

well, there’s diverse, and then there is Rick Springfield and Opeth on the same bill! :) Maybe Rick has gone metal?

    • Shinaain

Rick was always metal. Blacker than than the blackest black, times infinity.

  • Jenna

With the exception of Rick Springfield I’d probably enjoy this festival quite a bit. Behemoth and BTO could do a medley, Takin’ Care of the Left Hand ov God.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Razakel-Dementor/1248980676 Razakel Dementor

You forgot to put the v and not the f for the word of.

  • Facebook User

that festival looks fucking awesome! although somehow I don’t see rick springfield backstage partying with the rest of the bands.

    • Shinaain

In that event, I think you would be very surprised.

  • SonOF

I guess the Swedes are very open-minded, because that is one hell of a wacky lineup. Hell if you told me I could see Opeth, Slayer, Mastodon, Behemoth, Watain, and Steel Panther, I’d sit through Rick Springfield, Ratt, fucking Lady Gaga…it would still be worth it.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Id go see this in a heartbeat.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Devon-Czekaj/550092101 Devon Czekaj

You’re actually complaining about having a diverse lineup instead of 15 bands that all sound the same?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Razakel-Dementor/1248980676 Razakel Dementor

I agree. My wife could enjoy half of those bands and I’ll enjoy the other. To which will probably lose me somewhere when behemoth are on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Keith-Brown/537636633 Keith Brown

This is officially THE BEST CONCERT EVAR

  • Kazz

Most of that is very “meh” to me but I’d still get psyched to go see that just for Mastodon and Opeth.

  • NoName

Wow, Disney After Dark. Talk about a blast from the past! Like a blast in your mouth!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Duna-Salous/527287686 Duna Salous

    My biggest question is . . .

Who the fuck invited Anvil? Vh1?!

    • pigchop

Anvil should be invited to play ALL rock festivals.

  • pigchop

Rick Springfield is a rocker at heart. Yeah…not very brutal, but then again – so fucking what.

  • Sammy

    Aldo Nova?!

However, Rick Springfield plays himself on Californication as a coked up, man-whore who fucks bimbos while playing his own music on the stereo. Tell me THAT’S not metal!

  • FlyingDadBomb

Too bad this kind of lineup will never exist in America…unless they reform Woodstock.

    • SonOF

If they reformed Woodstock, you could bet your ass it wouldn’t include any cool metal bands like this. If they made a Woodstock tomorrow, it would include the following: Lady Gaga, Kings of Leon, Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, Radiohead, Linkin Park, Velvet Revolver, Five Finger Death Punch, Vampire Weekend, Lil Wayne, The Black Eyed Peas, Alice in Chains, Shinedown, Pearl Jam, Weezer, Drake, Them Crooked Vultures, Foo Fighters, Nickelback….etc etc

  • William Grimmkvlt

Homer doesn’t care who’s on the bill. He just wants to hear Taking Care Of Business. “No talking! No new crap! Taking Care Of Business!”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Waldt/1371330194 Max Waldt

All this festival is missing is the Allman Brothers, Madonna, and Anal Cunt.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Vega/100000288146013 Lauren Vega

Haha I actually really like this one. Can’t pin down those Swedes.

  • Utmu

The thing that’s TRULY wrong with this is that Opeth’s name isn’t in bold…

  • SonOF

I wish US promoters actually thought metal was a viable form of music and put together fests with this level of awesomeness. :/

    • Megan

Seriously. We don’t have shit compared to Sweden. I mean, come on. Warped Tour? Mayhem? Fucking shit. I’d take Ratt over Nevershoutnever! any day.

  • Frampler

How many time are your readers from Europe – like me – going to have to explain that festivals over here often have a diverse array of acts. After all, they are festivals rather than gigs.

  • Iggy’s Biggie

    What!?
You Americunts got nuthin bad to say about SAGA?

As much as I can’t stand them; they are far more Metal than half the bands on this bill.

  • large jockstrap

this festival looks incredible! i’d love to be there!

  • C.

    What do I think? HOAX, that’s what I think…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Fritz-Pettersen/536945538 Fritz Pettersen

You guys had a post about the difference between the metal fans in the u.s. and Europe. I think you came to the conclusion that Europe is more open in between the different sub-genres. This would be the perfect example of that then, would’nt it?

  • Mehmeh

Sweden Rock Festival is great. They have four large outdoor stages, a smaller tent scene plus a demo stage and it’s a four day festival. You’re not expected to like EVERYTHING but on the other hand you’ll have plenty of time to get drunk, hang out with friends, visit the different camping sites, taking a bath in the ocean etc etc. Last year I saw bands such as Immortal, Candlemass, Twisted Sister, In Flames, Heaven & Hell, Journey and Amon Amarth. Great mix for us who like both older and newer metal/hard rock.

This year I’ll see Opeth, Mastodon, Watain, Gary Moore (play his hardrock material!), Behemoth, Anvil etc. Couldn’t get that kind of mix anywhere else.

  • Kelley68

Well….for those of you who might not think Rick Springfield puts on one rockin’ show…..metal head or not (I love metal too, Ozzy being a top favorite artist of mine, along with dozens of other metal guys!)….I have a feeling you may come away being VERY surprised at the GREAT freakin’ show he puts on. Yes, strange to see him in that line-up (as a Rick fan, it kind of floored me too, lol), but I’m tellin’ ya…the man is an amazing guitarist & vocalist and has more energy at age 60 than most artists half his age. I’m a die-hard Rick fan, life-long…as he IS a rocker (just not a metal musician, he was raised on the Beatles and classic rock mostly), and he can keep up with the best of them. He does have some “harder” music if you give it a listen. It’s from 2004 and the CD is called Shock Denial Anger Acceptance. Again…not metal, but hard rockin’ guitars and angst-ridden music and lyrics. In your face stuff and a favorite collection of mine. With any luck, he will play some songs off that album at the festival. :)

For the comment that said they can’t picture Rick partying backstage with the metal-guys…..think again! Rick LOVES to party hard and is a really cool dude in person. I’ve met him several times and he never disappoints! ;-)

Axl Rose Brawls with Self in Local Bar, Kicks Self Out of Guns ‘n’ Roses

    By Ursula Christophersen

CHICAGO—While on tour with the latest version of Guns ‘n’ Roses, lead singer, Axl Rose, found himself in a scuffle with himself at a neighborhood bar, after the band’s nightly performance. According to witnesses, Rose was sitting by himself in a corner, when he began arguing with himself at high volume. It… »

  • Chris

Opeths only reason to go slayers sucks just like the rest of those bands

  • Nick

I think thats an amazing line-up I love all types of music and I think the diversity of it is awesome.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonah-Livingston/691824296 Jonah Livingston

This guy is a huge Rick Springfield fan, so thats at least one dude that would shit a brick to see him play with Mastodon and Suicidal Tendencies.

  • dot

simple: because it’s a ROCK festival and not just a METAL festival. it’s also a way to draw a larger demographic (or a more varied crowd).

  • seasonswithered

I don’t understand why this comes as such a shock to you MS guys because this isn’t new for Europe. They have these types of shows that combines different genres of music and from what I understand bands love playing thoses shows because the people are fans of music, not just metal. Everything musically is so segregated here in the states when it comes to concerts.

  • nick

Gary Moore will school your ass! He is such a seminal guitarist. This line-up is awesome. If only I had the dough, and a passport, and a clean record, I could travel to Sweden and have the time of my life. If you go, do check out Jorn, his latest material is top-notch classic metal.
