SO HAVE YOU LISTENED TO IHSAHN’S NEW ALBUM YET???

ihsahnIf not, you’re seriously missing out.

After is easily my favorite thing released so far in 2010, up there with Shining’s Blackjazz… with whom Ihsahn shares a saxaphone player, interestingly enough. Those expecting black metal akin to Ihsahn’s Emperor alma mater should look elsewhere, because you definitely won’t find that here. I find the music on After to be uncategorizeable other than just “metal” and [perhaps] distinctly Scandinavian. It’s avant garde, it’s experimental, it’s deep and it’s complex yet catchy and accessible, but it doesn’t come close to fitting into any pre-defined niche. It’s just really, really fucking good music, the kind you just know is the result of intense scrutiny of every single sound and note.

Check Sammy O’ Hagar’s glowing review of After as well as his fascinating interview with the man himself.

Ihsahn’s only got one song from the new album up on his MySpace page (“The Barren Lands,” all the way at the bottom of the player), but even this one song gives a good taste of what After is about (though by no means summarizes it).

  • Kye

    Love this album. So much

  • brandonmetal

    it’s interesting, but i wouldn’t say it’s catchy.

Yes, this album is excellent, I recently got it on Amazon MP3 store.

Now please don’t forget to hype the upcoming Barren Earth debut CD. The EP is so awesome I can’t see straight.

  • brandonmetal

I became a Fan on Facebook to listen to this and I just as quickly stopped being a Fan. To put if simply I did not like it very much and will not be purchasing it. Lots of other great music coming out that that puts this one to shame.

“Lots of other great music coming out that that puts this one to shame.”

      Like what?

After is an excellent, focused album. And the saxophone is a great fit for the music.

      • RockOutWithMy…YouKnow

I think this is excellent, but The Ocean’s CDs this year are going to put everything else out there to shame, IMO

  • Alex

    After is fantastic!

Not enough people have said it: This album is fuckin great!

  • Who Gives A Damn

  • Frank Injection

This LP is already on my best of 2010 list! Cant… stop… listening…

  • Double D

I’m stealing this bitch off the internet right now! I’ll get back to you guys with my thoughts…

    • Double D

Well, maybe I need to listen to it a little more. I don’t know, usually I agree with you guys on albums, but I am just not digging this. I guess it’s kinda unique, but I just am not feeling it. Oh well, back to listening to Shrinebuilder…

  • http://reigninblonde.com Angela Gossowski

Fantastic album. I agree with Vince; one of the best things to come out this early in 2010. THIS GUY NEEDS TO TOUR.

  • HokiePokie

1 minute in and I’m definitely loving it.

  • iolanach

Very good album indeed. Not the be all end all of metal, but very good.

  • MetalRod

Why does he have to look like a creepy child molester?

    • Double D

If that’s what you think child molesters look like, you better stay away from Gainesville. Those beardos are all over the fucking place.

    • The Ghost of D. Boon

Man I was just about to come in here and comment on the marvelousness of Ihsahn’s beard.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

It is a totally sweet beard though.

Actually now that I think about it he looks WAY WAY creepier clean shaven.

  • TheHangingBrain

This album is amazing, beautiful in every way. Is so good it makes me want to fuck my speakers.

Very good album. Already a contender for best of 2010. The use of saxophone is in just the right places. I like it a lot.

    • Chris Berseth

I agree. The saxophone works out great and adds a lot to the sound.

      • The Ghost of D. Boon

I’ve only listened to a very small part of the first song, and I haven’t come up on any sax yet. It’s usually a dealbreaker, so we’ll see how it goes.

So far I likes what I hears though

  • Motoghost

Actually for anyone that hasn’t heard it as a whole, the whole album is up on Ihsahn official myspace page.

  • http://blasterpiecetheater.com Carlo Dela Cruz

    Saxophone bitches!!!

  • nick

I haven’t taken it out of my car since I bought it over a week ago. Probably listened to it about a dozen times through now. At first it didn’t really grab me but with each time it got better. Lakes of MArs has the best riff I’ve heard since the one that opens Opeth’s Baying of the Hounds. The sax melody at the beginning of the last track is perfect sunset music. He gets better with every release. I really hope he tours the States.

    • nick

And that growling fretless bass tone on I think track 6 is wicked.

  • Awful Offal Carnage

Damn, looks like someone beat me to the punch with metal sax…

  • http://www.twitter.com/lordserge lord serge

Both AFTER n BLACKJAZZ amazing musik! If only MAYHEM would try more stuff like these albums…

    • Kye

They did. Not so much with the sax or anything, but Grand Declaration of War(and Chimera to a lesser extent) was definitely progressive for black metal. I personally think those were some of their best works, but they got a stupid amount of shit from their older fans because the music wasn’t “true” enough.

  • Carlo

Album of the year, hands down.
