METALLICA’S MEGAFORCE DEMOS: A GLIMPSE OF AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE WHERE DAVE MUSTAINE WAS NEVER FIRED

Thursday, February 18th, 2010 at 11:00am by

Cosmo Lee has really outdone himself this time. Invisible Oranges has Metallica’s two-song Megaforce demo – their first recording with Cliff Burton and their only one with Burton and Dave Mustaine – for free download.

If you’re a metal dork – and I assume you are if you’re reading this site – this is a must-have. Not only is it a glimpse at a legendary band in one of their earliest incarnations, but it’s also a chance to compare and contrast early versions of two ‘Tallica faves, “No Remorse” and “Whiplash,” with their final incarnations. Here’s a sample of Cosmo’s analysis of “No Remorse”:

“Mustaine’s solos don’t really say anything, whereas Hammett’s have fluidity and direction. Interestingly, Hammett’s second solo builds off of Mustaine’s ideas.”

I’m still formulating my own opinions about the differences. While I do that, go here to download the demo, and then start stirring shit up in the comments section with a Mustaine vs. Hammett debate.

I’m glad dave’s with Megadeth. I’ve enjoyed their music for a long while now. So to me it doesn’t really matter.

Excellent! You really just have to take it for what it is worth. No need to evaluate who the better guitarist is. Ringo was right for The Beatles, Johnny was right for The Ramones, and Hammett is right for Metallica.

    • Biff_Tannen

      “Hammet is right for Metallica”

That’s like saying that a turd is the right thing to put in a toilet.

jesus christ that solo at the beginning of no remorse is horrible. i also agree with the other Brandon glad we got Megadeth out of it. 2 kick ass metal bands is better than 1…but i do love checking out old demos its always cool to hear aband when they are just starting out and learning the ropes. i suggest listening to some early 1981-82 live bootlegs they are pretty sloppy.

    • KilledByDeath

Metallica is always sloppy live :P

no you are incorrect. Hetfield is usually very tight on his guitar playing and Robert is always spot on. Kirk and Lars have off nights but the band as a whole have been getting way tighter these days compared to 2004. im not saying they are as tight as megadeth live but they are not sloppy.

        • Trux

          Agreed !

        • KilledByDeath

Well, i mostly mean Kirk, but his guitar is pretty high in the mix so it really affects the overall impression. Props to Het tho.

i agree! 2 kick-ass metal bands are better than 1! i love metallica and megadeth!

  • Johnny

Mustaines solos don’t say anything compared to Hammetts? lol… let me sum up a Hammet solo, now AND then: “Wah wah wah wah wah wah e minor run wah wah wah”

thank god we did get megadeth out of this though

      You’re missing the point

honestly i would rather hear Kirk overkilling the wah then the boring uninspired mindless shredding that mustaine does. i know he kills kirk in playing ability but i dont find his soloing memorable (there are some exceptions though)

        • Johnny

The only time Kirks guitar playing was good was the Black Album.

          • UpwindGravy

Dude, you’re on a metal website. Most people here know the statement you just made came straight out of your ass. I guess solos from Fade To Black, One, and Shortest Straw pretty much sucked in your book? If anything the Black Album era is where he started to slide a bit. Go listen to Enter Sandman for the nineteenth BILLION time you FUCKIN’ DICK!!!

          • Facebook User

hahaha @ UpwindGravy’s comment. Anytime i see people talking about Metallica there’s always someone that haha people need to get their own opinion..

          • Facebook User

i meant to say “there’s always someone that says the same thing”

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Brady/5027798 Michael Brady

I’ll agree that Dave’s soloing isn’t memorable for the most part, but anyone who claims that his solo in Holy Wars isn’t memorable can kiss my ass.

          • Fufkin

I still think Hammett’s creative pinnacle was Justice – he stepped up on that and really contributes to the bleak feel of some of the songs with some interesting ideas on his leads. But after that, well…

      • Nickmeister

doesn’t anyone here think load is just pure fuckin’ brilliant?!?!?!?!

and just to bring the point home… a guitar solo shouldn’t have to be all meedlee meedlee meedlee fretboard wanking, for fuck’s sake.

a solo for solo’s sake is crap. the solo compliments the song and adds texture and feel -no matter what it is you’re playing.

        anyhow… yeh, i’m just happy there’s megadeth.

  • Kuranes

This is an interesting piece of history. I agree that Hammett’s solos on Kill ‘Em All are better than these, but this is also a demo and doesn’t necessarily reflect what Mustaine might have recorded in a real session.

in case anybody is interested in other demos
    http://demos.metpage.org/
there is some cool shit there

  • Who Gives A Damn

All versions of this song suck, period. But Mustaine’s better.

  • pigchop

I have always been glad Dave was fired. A world without Megadeth would suck. I would really like to hear this demo done up right.

  • http://www.myspace.com/dragmymiserydown myke

    wow pretty coool

  • Tayne Hughes

i would have to say i like both guitarists the same. although mustaine is an egomaniacal asshole. they both have theyre ups and downs.

but just remember; forget the past. live in the now. megadeths new record was obviously better than metallicas, by a bazillion points. and i dont care who sold as many records. whoever sold the least is better, in my opinion.

    less mainstream=more metal

(oh shit ive really stirred up the ‘tallica freaks… quick! matt heafy! hide me in your japafro!)

Of course, Hammett based many of his solos off Mustaine’s initial ideas, and this was simply a business decision on the part of the band: the band’s fans at the time knew the Mustaine solos (theoretically) and Hammett’s decision to quote the recognizable openings of them allowed him to slip into the fold easier.

I do like the opening whammy bar bit to the solo on “Whiplash” though. I wonder why Kirk didn’t use that bit as well?

In this alternate, Bizarro World, we would have only Metallica and not both, so I’m fine with the way it turned out…St. Anger nothwithstanding.
