PHIL ANSELMO AUTOBIOGRAPHY TO BE CO-AUTHORED BY METALSUCKS’ OWN COREY MITCHELL

Friday, February 26th, 2010 at 10:30am by

Just wanted to give you guys the first official heads-up that I just signed a contract with former Pantera lead singer Phil Anselmo to help him pen his autobiography. Be on the lookout for an official press release next week.

This one has the MetalSucks handprints all over it, as MS co-head cheese Vince Neilstein hooked me up with Anselmo through the most unlikely of sources — Vince’s dad’s girlfriend and Phil’s aunt and uncle.

Rest assured, MS Maniacs will be privy to many exclusives as I help Phil tackle his incredible story. I will do my best to take you behind the scenes of the making of the book, post advance chapters before the book hits the stores, and post deleted material that won’t make the final cut but will be worth reading nonetheless.

Stay tuned to MetalSucks for more details.

Congrats to Corey! I’ll definitely read this (even though I’d trade Dime for him any day).

    • SukMyBoomStik

It’s funny you bring that up. I’ve often wondered if Phil was in Dime’s shoes if he would be deified in the same manner that Dime has been. I’m not saying either doesn’t deserve to be deified; Pantera is my favorite band of all time and I think they’re both incredible, personality issues aside. It just would to be interesting to see if he would be revered by everyone or if he would just be remembered as a guy that was a dick but made great music.

I mainly mention it because the delusional fan who shot him apparently did it because he felt like Dime was the reason the band broke up. If anything, it was Phil’s fault (from what I’ve read). Dime was the most chill dude you could ever meet, and he deserves his following.

  • cougar party

wow, Corey. Congratulations. I have been waiting for an Anselmo biography. Can’t wait to read it.

i’m buying it! can’t wait to see what you guys come up with.

  • Robotscythe

If the book is anything like his interviews, it’ll be sure to be the usual pseudo-tough guy, self -aggrandizing drivel.

At least Corey can make Mr. Anslemo’s incoherent mumblings readable and entertaining.

    • Sammy

Maybe instead of labeling it an “autobiography” it should be subtitled, “As mumbled incoherently to…”

  • hotsauce

That is AWESOME to hear! This will be a nice change up from reading about grisly murders.

  • Kuranes

    Congratulations. That’s a great win.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Anthony-P-Stine/1314021455 Anthony P Stine

Congratulations. This should be an interesting read.

  • Satan’s Poopshoot

Awesome Corey, I can’t wait! Phil Anselmo is a BAMF.

  • Pat

“An autobiography (from the Greek, αὐτός-autos self + βίος-bios life + γράφειν-graphein to write) is a book about the life of a person, written by that person.”

I certainly hope Mr. Mitchell knows how to use a edictionary, coz he apparently knows very little about, you know, wrtitng and stuff.

    • cougar party

I think technically it’s still an autobiography because Phil is writing it about himself, from his perspective (1st person). Acknowledging, Corey is helping write it, it’s still a autobiography because it will be Phil’s words more or less.

    • Genial Gentile

      You are a pedantic jackass.

    • SonOF

Pat, what the hell are you babbling about? We all know what an autobiography is, and a HUGE percentage of notable people that write autobiographies have a co-writer since, duh, they aren’t all good writers on there own. If Mitchell wrote the book without Phil being there giving input every step of the way, then it would be a BIOgraphy…This however, since Phil and Corey will be creating it TOGETHER, is still an autobiography. Did you think every autobiography you have ever read by a celebrity was written SOLELY by the celeb? If so, you are pretty ignorant.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

To be honest I was hoping Phil would Pen this himself. ( I know i can hear the laughter) I dont want it to turn into Slash, Nikki sixx’s, or all the other over hyped and over blown Bio’s out there. One things for sure- first day buyer.

Or better yet he shouldve had Mike IIV help him with it.

    • SonOF

Almost no celeb (musician, actor, etc.) pens an autobiography COMPLETELY by himself. They just don’t have the writing skill to do so.

  • Tonberry

    Awesome! Congrats, Corey.

  • metalguy

corey i couldnt find your books at barnes and nobel under true crime series but ill amazon this when it comes out

  • I killed a Dunky

rules!! ready to KICK Neil_Strauss ASS?? LOL

  • Who

I’m very impatient to read this.
    Anselmo is my personal god.

  • SonOF

Congrats Corey, I’m looking forward to reading this.

  • Dirtman73

you should write a pop-up version. Open up one page, a giant fist springs out and smashes you in the face. Open another page, a dirty-looking hypodermic needle pops out and jabs you in the arm. Throw in a microchip that plays an 8-bit version of “I’m Broken” and you’ve got the perfect kids book.

    YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Corey-Mitchell/660352330 Corey Mitchell

Thanks everyone! I am really looking forward to working with Phil on his incredible story. I have spent several months talking with him already and, I have to say, he is one cool motherfucker. Much nicer than I ever would have expected and he has a really great sense of humor. This is going to be one hell of a book.

  • Skullywag

Dimebag was cool, but not half he was made out to be AFTER his death. He, Phil, and all involved had moved quite far from their humble beginings in Arlington Tx.
I remember a day coming across Dimebag at a toy store in Dallas around Christmas in early 90′s. He was with a couple of his guys, and I waved at him. He got a pen from one of his buds and headed toward me, like he wanted to sign an autograph. I waved him off, and said “nah,I just wanted to say Hi “. They turned around, and one of them (I don’t know who) said “fuck him”.
I kinda thought differently about Pantera after that…I still dug their music, but felt they had become more than a bit jaded. I don’t blame Phil whatsoever for Dime’s death, but kinda lost respect for him awhile back when he hosted Headbanger’s Ball, and was so stoned he nearly took a nod several times on camera. What a waste.

So I read Black Tooth Grin and felt the need to throw a drink in the right direction-

    Exploding sun-
As souls are recycled from ‘eternal inflation’ which says new universes pop into existence at an unknown rate, create a complex web of enveloping universes within a vast multiverse so are musicians, artists, lawyers, judges, critics, saints, and sinners, matter, dark energy, Superjoints, and mad vagrants . Within a web of infinity we gravitate towards those sparks that remain in us. We pay attention to those flames that we recognize and the venom spit speaks our truth. We need these voices- Some have not failed that duty as a soldier for the universe. If a voice is heard but full of bullshit and lies that voice faces it’s own… We all know those voices. We need truth- We need a Big Lebowski, we need a Phil Anselmo, we need a Steven Hawkins, we need a Pepper Keenan’s, we need the stoner metals, the vicious metals, the black Vein metals, the Black Tusks, The Zoroasters, I fucked your girlfriend metal because they are not lying. The music is telling a story. When Black Sabbath started it was Tony Iommi’s idea after seeing how many people were watching horror movies next to the practice spot in Arston, Birmingham to play scary music. Why were Black Sabbath able to tell their dark story… because they grew up in the aftermath of a war and that is what they new…it’s clear in ‘war pigs’. They played as children in war debris and rubble. So now we throw all this modern day war bullshit chaos in our face. The wars are so complicated, deceiving and come in all colors and shapes that we need an Anselmo and voices of reason to help us find truth. We have to have voices to help us find our own. So many bands still use this horror theme to entertain us musically but Anselmo found the need to speak the truth. You can’t disregard this. This is what’s sets him apart from so many… Without glorifying this soul, he does deserve this angle. His words have catapulted a generation of nods. That is history and we all Concur with respect for ourselves. That is what we needed. A man to tell this story. So we can pick up or shovels, pens, guitar picks or steering wheel and nod our heads in unison or on our own… We needed to hear this voice.

Housecore is an act of metal forward thinking and collaboration of like minded metal fists knuckling the power of each others creative forces and musical invention. This can be assured that if “god” forbid Anselmo ceases to create which can’t happen because the fucker is a musician and can play guitar, bass, and drums. So if he ain’t screaming he’s nailing notes and when he’s not nailing notes he’s helping bands. Fuck interviews… They pail in perspective of creativity’s luminescence, they are a pen mark in a book of biblical markings. An interview is a moment in time and when a brick wall is up in response to onlookers how does one look beyond the bullshit questions and see into the temple of the vast complex process of what occurs in that skull. Not in a public interview. Who puts there sleeve up and then exposes the 93 million miles of distance from the sun to earth to explicates their origin and the uncoiling of matter.
Amon ra… The god of the sun poured it’s rays on the children of Egypt… Like a night like this ‘down’ show… A sun is pouring it’s heart out on the planets orbiting it’s venue. Orbiting it’s chaos, it’s the only thing that keeps us warm … the furnace of gods chaotic process. Hershel 36 is a monster star that is 7 1-2 thousand light years away and 100 times more massive than our sun and 4 million times brighter than our star, so how far do we follow light to see a reflection of ourselves. We see this reflection in Phil in ourselves and that is why we watch him live. He is us and he knows this. He appreciates us because the audience is him and he is the audience. Phil-core will push you to your limit and that is only the beginning. In contrast Phil will scare you and bury your dreams. He may pull your chords and leave because a feeling is stronger than words. If you don’t live by your gut you will find yourself looking left and calculating a change in coarse. Never looking back, looking forward at the hurricane.

As a spark from an exploding sun is lashed out, inevitably a man is filtered through the common thread of Humanities countless conscious self created hungry souls. ‘Unscarred’ a statement made to embrace all scars. One with the ability to call demons and angels friends and a profound glance of the dark corners can be overtaken and give birth to the origin of energies worth and dismay. Strength to overcome the blood drawn from having a pure consciousness. Taking innocents and scraping it on the concrete of evolution at 100 miles an hour will quickly give one power of pain beyond that of grinding motors. A burning child cannot see the speed of corruption, selfish pride, or how lost souls can jeopardize human harmony. A young man is forced to bare a burden as deep as an expanding universe is to bear witness to its own depletion. A man recognizes its own self destruction just as everything in the universe destroys everything it creates including its stardust lives. If Phil was born with the same laws of physics as the rest of us what gives him that link that touches our pain and gives so many people strength, power, and understanding?

A young punk joined a hair metal band… A combo for the late 80′ and when galaxies collide crazy shit happens. The two together shrouded a planet. Split a core open that lives in all of us and the ones lucky enough to catch it rays saw gods power explode. The universe Saw itself explode through 2 beasts of flesh. Phil without Dimebag in its origin was enough to make it in any band with ‘fuck your head’ power. A powerful source of energy and an understanding of what is going on in life’s current velocity. You know… god, drugs, sex, music, politics, heretics, etc… Dime had a Pallet of exploding colors and vice-versa. No matter how you look at it it’s an amazing painting imbedded in time like a roman empire’ legacy. Who else at that stage in music could have suited the birth of phil-core. Maybe No-one fit the bill for phils musical birth on a major scale than Dimebag. It’s a solid tale and I don’t think anyone can put into words that chemistry and I don’t think we should. listen to the albums and they tell us in music and lyrics more information than anyone can dissect. Whether Dime or Phil wrote the guitar parts the albums sting with a profuse bite. ‘Vulgar display of power’ is a better calculated experience statement than the bible. It helped more kids than any preacher ever could. It was honest and it was powerful. While so many bands were moving into Kurt Cobains garage, Pantera was shredding pavement playing live and blowing your fucking mind. Because beyond the “live” movement they are famous for and creating chaos everywhere they went, there was a modern day poet in growing pains. Listening to ‘Cowboys from hell’, the remnants of judest priest trickle out but for the most part a poet is creating his own thrown and the lyrics are far more fundamental and powerful than anyone had seen before.

So a lot of judgment falls on someone for sharing there feelings. “Dime needs to get his ass kicked”. No-one on this Planet had the right to say but maybe Phil and anyone who spends that much time and exploding that much expanding and gravitating energy may have no option but to have a few falling feeling even with the Dionysus Darrell Abbott! A death that was so misfortunate that it really makes Kurt Cobains death look pathetic. Dime dies on stage with guitar in hand. And he wouldn’t have it any other way. ‘Unnecessary’ will fuck your head up because something on that magnitude is beyond anyone of us on this earth. Dimes death was tied at magnitude with Hendrix and the book “black-tooth grin” pays small tribute to his emense talent, power, skills, and just plain “a bad-ass mother fucker” at the helm of the musician world. He schooled all mother fuckers in the 90′ and you knew it. So when anyone judges Phil for some cross engagements with Pantera you have to be in the band to hold judgment and even when your in that band you need to look deep within yourself to find out why you’re really pissed off. Misplaced blame is a weakness. Dimes death is beyond us all. The magic they made crushes any fight they could have made with one another. Phil walked because he needed too. He needed to move on in his mind and no-one can say any different. No-one can take the most powerful band and give it rules. It was time for mr Anselmo and no-one else’s business really. Dime held to pantera because it was his baby. He gave birth to Pantera and no-one just leaves there creation. It was his creation and no-one can blame him for exhausting all possibilities to continue Pantera but Phil had to walk on. You need a psycological microscope to analyze and process an unspoken exit that did unfold. And no-one should blame anyone. The man that executed Dimebag had a sickness that he had no control over. He had no ability to see his Schizophrenia was deeply disturbing and his illness destroyed not only Dimes life but his own life and many others. This was an act beyond our conpreshension and blame is not the answer. Acceptance is the only answer.

When you watch a pantera video you are getting a dimebag outlook, you really only catch a small portion of what This singer is about. When you listen to a pantera album there is a driver taking us all somewhere. He does not sit down when he drives, he does not ask for your permission or where you are going. He does not stop for red lights and he does not look back. If You had a chance to ride in this vehicle you know what the fuck I’m talking about. keep your distance, there are no seat-belts and the destination is a journey.
A Philosopher and musician named Phil Anselmo. Like Hendrix when he plays music and explains that he is just a reporter from the galaxy, Or John Frusiante says he is a channel for the universe to express itself… Phil is an explosion of that same beautifully insane And painfully ripping process. I simply appreciate a good reflection of unifications energy and agree with a modern day poets understanding of live.

Marijuana, Metal, and mad drugs- No Doubt musicians and pot help one another and Phil a wiser man now knowing himself and his substance experiences, recreational entertainment or substance inspiration have a relationship just as so many on the planet do. BUT- we can all get high as teenagers but somewhere down the line we are forced to deal with some weird shit… If you never did then I’d say you never got high enough. Some people’s chaos is a little weirder than others and being a lead singer has to come with its own head-explosions. Although everyone’s trip is different my early 20′ were no place for dope. Like phil discusses in his blog “it suites me just fine now” I have to concur, But there is a time and a place like he explicates. Maybe taking all those drugs too early in teen life is an extremely bad idea. when Pantera entered my life I was about 16 or 17. I got my first copy of cowboys from Hell. Me and my friends were… High. High on weed, popping pills, dropping acid, eating shrooms, shooting and snorting meth and coke, partying, drinking, etc… So as a young man’s mind is developing He is chemically fucking with its development. This is not a good thing and although through hundreds of generations of amazing art is inspired by this experimental darker side, it also has bit into Many souls and has caused misfortunate casualties. All drugs have their place but it really is an adult decision on how much, when, etc and too many kids get involved before they are really wise enough to understand the impact or the correct dose of drugs. Phil is most likely no exception. When the demon wants to spin it’s ugly head… Nothing can really prepare you. An artist is a subject in his own nightmare. Pain equals power and we may never meet those Anselmo demons on a personal angle. We may never know but There head spun it’s ugliness on Anselmo and it gave him Power.
Fuck you sell-outs, fuck You corruption, fuck you demons, fuck you god Sayers, fuck you! A ‘soul of war’ a soul for the fucking truths understanding of live. I am not a metal journalist nor am I going to brag about underground metal. I was just interested in shining light on a punk kids story and that same man that challenged religions, gods, lies, drugs, crowds, rumors, pain, industry, foes and friends. A message in Blood.

    Just thoughts-
