FUCK YOU, MATTHEW FOX

Okay, so in all fairness, this isn’t really the L O S T star’s fault – but I don’t know the name of the graphic designer/marketing genius who did this, so I’m unfairly placing the blame with the dude whose face is on the cover. And if Matthew Fox thinks that’s unfair, I’m sure his millions of dollars and fucking of strippers will ease his pain.

ANYWAY, you’re familiar with the logo for The Haunted, no? In case you somehow are not, here it is:

And are you aware that prior to L O S T (but after Party of Five), Matthew Fox appeared on a television series called Haunted? You’re probably not, since it was cancelled in 2002 after just twelve episodes. But those episodes are coming to DVD, and I just saw the cover art for said collection. Ready? Here it is:

What the fuck, dude?!? That’s not even subtle. That is just an outright rip-off. Whose idea was that, Nick Simmons? “Oh, dude, don’t sweat it, we’ll just add the silhouette of a second person and put the other guy between the ‘N’ and the ‘T’ instead of the ‘U’ and the ‘N,’ no one’ll even notice!”

For shame, douche bags behind this. For shame.

        Look at this font I made, see how my letter J has a slightly higher hook to it than this other font? I’m gonna give it a different name and sell it to some sucker graphic designer. I know there’s more to typography than font creation but it’s by and large bullshit and it doesn’t change the fact that the most visually interesting text is 9 times out of 10 designed free hand or illustrated. That said, I do like The Haunted’s logo. :P

          “Free hand” text is also typography.

          There is skill to doing typography well. Thus you see so much that is bad. There is a craft to putting text together in readable yet interesting and artistic ways.

          You still haven’t explained why typography is useless (when it is probably the most useful art from to you) or bullshit.

            Nah, I would argue that just because letters and/or words are involved, doesn’t necessarily make it typography. But that’s a matter of opinion I suppose.

            Maybe “useless” is the wrong word, mundane and trite maybe? To even call typography an art form is a bit of a stretch. I’d be more inclined to call a skilled typographer an “expert” the same way a computer coder is not an artist. My job occasionally requires me to sift through hundreds and hundreds of shitty fonts and then incorporate them into other things, so forgive me, I’m probably a little jaded.

            Letters are what makes typography, it’s not a matter of opinion.

            What is may be mundane and trite is called typesetting. I wouldn’t use trite but mundane at time especially if you have no creative input.

            Just for the record I am an Art Director.

            Hope you didn’t take any offense. In addition to sifting, I’ve also spent a great deal of time (against my will) leading and kerning fonts as prep for animation. Makes me want to put a gun in my mouth. The whole thing just bores me really and I don’t understand how people get into it. Better someone else than me I guess.

            I figured you were something because of the ‘Kern’ in Kernel. I thought I was going to have to defend typography, but I’m glad you took the helm.

            Bearbomb, I don’t know what kind of job you have that requires you look through hundreds of shitty fonts, but perhaps you should steer clear of dafont.com and look at Hoefler & Frere-Jones or Peter Saville instead. There are much better typefaces located there.

            That makes sense then, ignore my previous comment. I agree with the fact that leading and kerning isn’t for everyone, but just because you hate it doesn’t mean it is useless.

    I can’t stand The Haunted. I hated how they were declared as “modern thrash”, when there were still real thrash bands out there only getting better and proving that thrash was still around.

    If it bugs Dolving, then I like this cover.

            No guys, you’re not alone, I’m seeing The Haunted with Slayer in May. More excited for The Haunted than Slayer!

            Don’t get me wrong, I love a bit of Slayer, but every song more or less sounds the same to me, with the obvious exceptions – Angel of Death, Seasons in The Abyss etc. And World Painted Blood was AWFUL. x_X

    Does anybody see The Haunted filing a lawsuit against UPN for practically stealing their logo? If they trademarked their brandname and logo type (which I doubt); they have legally no foot to stand on, should they decide to file a lawsuit.

    The blog that thinks that the vocals on Trivium’s new song sound like “classic death metal vox” is now angry that a shitty band with an incredibly unoriginal and generic typeface on their logo got “ripped off” by an unsuccessful TV show that uses a similarly unoriginal and generic typeface on their logo?

        And if you don’t want to care about how metal Pokemon is, that is your choice, but there is more substance to the idea that Pokemon is metal than to the idea that this TV show’s logo is a ripoff of The Haunted’s logo.

          haha, I found the whole Pokemon thing interesting really. Long before I was into metal, I was into Pokemon, so that was pretty cool. (H)

          And whilst The Haunted’s logo IS generic (I love them but I’ve never bought any of their shits cuz they’re just boring) this show clearly stole it by having a guy in it, the fact that the typeface is so generic just makes it even clearer that the show stole it by having that guy in it.

          And in the original post he clearly said that he knows it’s not Matthew Fox’s fault, he only said it cuz the dude is on the cover.

          And also, it doesn’t matter how much “substance” there is to this blog. It’s not a a high-end news outlet. They have plenty of more insightful articles, as well as quick things that they want to share with people.

          AND, if you don’t care, then why bother posting here at all?

      yea Zilty has a point but it goes right back to the idea that this site has a never ending love of metalcore and continues to push it as new and original music. it may st one time have been the truth but id no longer. i’m glad i skipped Trivium when they toured with Maiden i couldn’t have been happier

    So a generic band chooses a generic font and a short-lived TV series uses a similar generic font for their box set that will probably sell 50 copies, and a giant “Fuck you, Matthew Fox” is warranted? Because I’m sure Fox designed the logo, right?

    I almost didn’t think this was even news article worthy, since most metalheads I know (myself included) have never seen even Lost. seems like a lame show, and I doubt any of the staff even knows who The Haunted is, I call coincidence. but it was worth reading for the Nick Simmons rip, that made me laugh

    All this hate about The Haunted I don’t get! When Their first album came out I was blown away. Most thrash bands were in obscurity and the swedish death metal movement was kind of stale at that point. I agree that they sounded a lot like Slayer (which I also like a lot), but with heavier production (you could actually hear the bass) and with kick ass vocals. That album made you want to kill everybody in sight with it’s raw power. Also the haunted made me do it album was a very good followup with very good songs and inferior but tolerable vocals. They have generic sound and riffs? Don’t make me laugh!!!
