DEMON HUNTER HAVE A DIRTY SOILWORK FETISH

Friday, March 5th, 2010 at 10:30am by

Apparently all those goody-two-shoes Christian values don’t mean anything when it comes to ripping off your heroes. Demon Hunter’s new song “Collapsing” is a pretty damned good Figure Number Five-era Soilwork impersonation, right down to the hollow-sounding drum production, razor-sharp synth sounds and sing-songy chorus. All it needs to do is be better and you’d have a dead-ringer for Soilwork circa 2003.

Since I know nothing about 2003 Soilwork and happen to really like Demon Hunter I will be buying this album. I think this song is a progression from their last album and hope the rest is as good.

    • geekbeater

epic fail Vince. No wonder Axl is much better at this blog thing

  • myke

wow you can hear the auto tune on this guy’s voice. at least speed can actually sing

    • Achilles

He can actually sing well live. Which defeats the purpose of your comment. Also Speed is in this song and video. Therefore your comment is rendered even more pointless.

      • Waldo

you are correct I have seen them live he sings pretty well.

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/ Alkahest

      I couldn’t. I think you’re hearing the harmony

  • bloodtasteslikeshit

Part of me wants to say that they are progressing their sound, because in all reality this is a bit different than their previous work in a good way… but is it progressing if they’re stealing the sound of a previous band? Regardless, decent radio metal.

  • JB

Clearly Soilwork’s singer Speed is IN the video and ON the track at about 1:45ish, maybe that explains the Soilwork influence…

    • JB

Speed is on both pre chorus bits actually, also at :51 secs

  • Fufkin

Er, can you not hear and see that Bjorn from Soilwork actually guests on this song AND in the video? If not and it’s not part of the joke… well I just don’t know.

  • willsmith

Oh, now that’s FUNNY! Vince, you must feel like an idiot!
    Christians: 1
    Hellbound Vince: 0

  • willsmith

Vince, you should do just a wee bit of research, before you make afool out of yourself again.

A simple internet search revealed that this song was done in honor of Soilwork and included members of the band doing vocals.

You should change the name of the website to Vincentsucks.com…

God, I HATE those fuckin’ synths and elektro influences. I NEVER got into Strapping Young Lad for that reason, I’m just not into that sound.

  • Shitknuckle

The freakin singer looks like a slightly fatter version of Speed

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Parker/1048411723 Stephen Parker

Damn. How did they get Speed, Christian from MIseration/Ex-Scar Symmetry, and the vocalist of Throwdown?

    They are pretty stock.

  • Tim

Way to fact-check guys. I really hope there’s some kind of retraction or correction in the works.

  • joshkid

I never hear of these guys before. Pretty cool track. Thanks Vince.

    /sigh

“The video was filmed in Pittsburgh, PA by Endeavor Media (Anberlin, Owl City) and features Bjorn “Speed” Strid of Swedish death metal band Soilwork, who contributes guest vocals to the song.

“We’re all huge Soilwork Fans so this was an honor for us,” says Demon Hunter vocalist Ryan Clark. “Speed was on a very short wishlist of ours for guys that we would want to have do vocals on the record so we were really, really excited when he agreed to do it.”"

Obvious and painful mistake aside, the song is catchy, but mediocre.

  • orbital

i guess cookie cutter radio metal is better than cookie cutter metalcore.

wow. good point…the singer even has a sort of bald Bjorn thing going on too…man I love Figure Number Five…

    • Discipleofthewatch

I, too, love Figure Number Five.

  • Kuranes

That’s better than other Demon Hunter I’ve heard, but that may be because of the Soilwork guys on it.

Don’t worry Vince, I still love you.

  • brent

Easily the best track Demon Hunter have ever made. I wonder why? *cough*becausespeedisonit*cough*

    • ~Ja5oN~

      LMFAO literally!

  • http://infinitybasement.tumblr.com Jon Lewis

I was gonna say, “That guy even looks like Speed” and then I realized it actually is him. lol Not a bad tune, it does sound a lot like Soilwork though, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference if I heard this and didn’t know it was Demon Hunter. Still sounds pretty cool.

    1) How does having another band influence your sound = ripping off that band?
    2) How does that have anything to do with Christian values?
    3) How did you miss the fact that Speed is in this song in the first place?

Weak. That’s all I have to say there.

  • Jonathan

Isn’t it funny when someone who acts so superior is so wrong?
And personally, I really like what they’ve done with this song.

  • http://www.myspace.com/5stringsubsonicrumble tr00

said for the millionth time – Speed is on this song, and in the video. This song is a tribute in a way to Soilwork.

Now that that’s over with, eventually, you’ll run out of unfounded bullshit to sling at this band. You can’t tell me with half the cut-rate bands that you’ve deemed ‘teh best thang$ evAr’, that if this band kept any Christian influence hidden, you wouldn’t be right there alongside the other millions of non-christian fans. I get the sense that a lot of metal fans would hate bands like Gojira, Mastodon, etc. too, if they said they were Christian.

You know, the whole religious-tolerance thing is a two-way fucking street. You don’t seem to mind trying to shove every half-assed petagram lovin’ band down our throat.

  • Keviathan

Wow, what a talentless and generic piece of shit. You know, the whole Christian thing doesn’t even bother me. It’s their lack of growth within their songwriting that makes them such a forgetful band. This subgenre will fade away into nothing just like emo and nu metal did. From a marketing perspective, I wouldn’t waste my time supporting this gay shit if I were their label…

    • Sambo

Subgenre being Christian metal? You’re stupid. Either that’s what you meant or you meant something else, but this band is probably like other bands out there today. If you listen to all their albums, which sound different in their own way, you would be able to tell what kind of metal it is, but the fact that you’re blindsided and making this “subgenre” more “tongue-in-cheek” than it already is makes you more of a retard and less of a logic-making person.

  • willsmith

You can say what you want about DHs music, don’t lump all Christian/Positive metal in the same category. Check out Woe of Tyrants (which MetalSucks seems to love) or Becoming the Archetype or Living Sacrifice or Believer or…

Or just check out this myspace page I found that has lots of Christian Metal (Death, MetalCore, DeathCore, whatever)…

  • Reaper

You guys are fuck retarted the lead singer of soilwork sings is a guest singer in this song. Next time you try to smash a band research it a little so you don’t look like a complete dumbass.

    • Reaper

maybe i should learn to form a sentence correctly also.

  • ITTOA666

I imagine this will be the only slightly decent song on their new album of songs to cut yourself by.

    • Nathan G. McCoy

hey vn you idiot the reason it sounds like that is because they have bjorn “speed” strid the lead singer of soilwork singing on that song you dumbass
      -Saroar

  • Nathan J

Demon Hunter is a better band.. And even though “speed” is in this, it does NOT sound like Soilwork.. I listen to both religiously, and both bands are fuckin sick, and they sound NOTHING like each other. Demon Hunters new album doesn’t sound like Soilwork at all… I don’t even see how you can you make that argument, it sounds ridiculous lol
