METAL’S BEST SPEEDING TICKET SONGS?

Friday, March 5th, 2010 at 1:30pm by

I once had a summer job that required me to drive from NYC to a town called Garrison and back every day. That was a pretty lengthy commute – if I was lucky and there was no traffic, it would take a little under two hours each way – so I had plenty of time to crank metal and tempt fate, speeding-ticket wise. Kind of amazingly, no matter how fast I drove, I never actually got busted.

I mention it because when I think about it now, I honestly can’t remember what albums I used to blast as I was driving much faster than anyone reasonably should up and down the highway. But now a site called Exclaim! has posted a list of “Metal’s Top Ten Speeding Ticket Songs,” and it has some good suggestions for shit I could play if I ever find myself in such a position again.

Check out the list here, the come back and weigh-in with your favorite songs to speed by.

Good songs! I’m not familiar with a couple of them, but on the whole…

I know all about speeding and metal, for sure. Only had one speeding ticket, though, fortunately. I have good memories of my old 2001 Mustang GT, a manual transmission, dark blue with Flowmasters, which I used to speed and blast the metal in continually. Last time I drove it, right before I traded it in for my current truck, I had In Flames blasting on the stereo and I was going 80 on the local California freeways. Shh, don’t tell the CHP.

  • mort73

I had some issues last year where I found it nearly impossible to drive slow with Amon Amarth’s “Twilight of the Thunder God” in the car with me. Anything from the last two Disfear records too. They make me want to continually run from explosions.

    • anttichrist

      Agreed on the Twilight.

Destroy Destroy Destroy; The realm of ancient shadows, Born of Thunder.
I bunged up my beemer listening to that.

  • cougar party

Fuckng Hostile – Pantera. I’ve had some close calls with that one.

  • Pahkmycah

    No Painkiller, really?

SuperJoint Ritual’s A lethal dose of American Hatred album is awesome for speeding! I bought it in San Francisco and I drove back to Santa Clara (ussually about a 45-1hr drive) in less than 30 minutes! Going 120 in a Volvo is some sort of weird Oxymoron (no one gets pulled over in a Volvo!).

Also (Party Like it’s) 1997 from Sleeytime Gorilla Museum’s first CD (Grand opening and closing) is an awesome song to speed to!

And of course anything by Slough Feg is speeding gold (especially their cover of Manilla Road’s Street Jammer from the Hard Worlder album).

And non-metal speeding goodness is anything by Fishbone.

It appears I have a problem with speeding!

Sorry I don’t know why it posted like 3 versions of my post!

  • Gecko

White Zombie – Super Charger Heaven

It’s fast, it rips, and in my eyes the band can do no wrong. Plus, I know from experience that I can get my truck up to 90 when I have that track on. Pure kickassery…

    • Big Tricky

+1 to White Zombie, but I’m all about “La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1.” I couldn’t begin to narrow it down to one song from there though.

At The Gates — Blinded By Fear

Of course, I drive a Saturn, so speeding is not really an option unless I’m going downhill with a strong tailwind.

  • Matty2Fatty

I used to start all road trips with Laid to Rest and Get Your Hands Off My Women by The Darkness. I also used to listen to my iPod while driving my GSXR but had to stop because I kept finding myself going 2 or 3 times the posted limit…..gotta love sportbikes

    • Matty2Fatty

      *Woman, not women

    • anttichrist

For me, there are three songs that I would consider my favorite metal speeding songs.

“When You Were Shouting at the Devil…” – Zimmers Hole
    “Hyperdrive!” – Devin Townsend Project
    “Divinations” – Mastodon

    • conar

I always accelerate when Hyperdrive! is on. good call sir

    • Rachel

Feel like you’re in a spaceship by listening to By Your Command. haha

  • conar

I’ve never liked 502 that much and actually prefer 1,320 for a MegaDAVE song, but how about “Road to Ruin” by Annihilator, sweet ass tune and badass riff

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-D-Weiss/289600601 Eric D. Weiss

Definitely Soilwork’s “Stabbing the Drama.” Now that is an album to speed to. I was actually doing that about twenty minutes ago.

  • Cryzthormagnusian

Any of Rollins Band’s more amped up songs will get me killed on the Interstate someday.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Sterner/1335958279 Andrew Sterner

I’m gonna get flak for this, I know it, but oh well:

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Bark at the moon, The Oz

  • gojirasaurus

best driving song= the part right before the first chorus of Baroness Wabderlust. always makes me think of driving through a mountain at high speeds looking out the window. amazing

  • TonyT

I always have to watch it when I’m listening to DEP’s “Milk Lizard”.

  • The Overmatt

The Goatriders Horde by 3 Inches of Blood. Whenever that song comes on I pretty much end up ignoring the speed limit entirely.

  • AP

Iron Maiden by, Iron Maiden. Song for the Dead – QOTSA

  • erock

While in high school, I once got a speeding ticket while listening to Snot – My Balls Your Chin . . . sigh.

funny I was just thinking about this. I was just on the highway with my Ipod on shuffle. I definitely noticed that whenever a motorhead song came on the shuffle my speed instantly rose from 70 to about 85. couldn’t help it. it was subconscious for sure. pantera’s “i’m broken” came on and that also made me speed.

  • js

neil young harvest moon…..or Machine head – Halo

  • crapmcpoopin

Imperium, specifically beginning at 4:35 in the song. From there I wrap myself around a pole for funsies.

  • TheSalamanizer

Riding the Storm by Running Wild… all thanks to Brutal Legend
And I think this counts as metal: Bad Habit by The Offspring

  • villanj1

Was riding in my non-Metal buddy’s Miata (no joke but hey, they haul balls) and I popped in Sentenced’s The Cold White Light and went straight for Neverlasting. My friend exclaimed something along the lines of, “Holy shit, this is awesome!”, and gunned it down the freeway. Next thing we knew, red & blue is flashing behind us.

    • bretton

cops was after my hot rod lincoln

  • tim

I can’t drive slow while listening to Behemoth, specifically Evangelion. I hit 70 in a neighborhood thanks to Daimonos

  • the devil’s advocate

Actually my “obligatory Metallica contribution” is Trapped Under Ice. Not as lyrically related but the feeling of helplessness and frustration/futility (and the pace of the song of course) makes for a heavy right foot.

Also, lol @ the article’s ” one of the only times Lars did something right “

  • Dimebag6sic6

Institutionalized, you would have to spastically go fast during the freakouts of the song and slow down during the other main riff.

  • aznmetalchick

Too many to mention. But the following usually nearly get me into the guard rail:
Gojira’s “Heaviest Matter of the Universe”
    Meshuggah “Neurotica”
    Disfear “An Arrogant Breed”
    Will Haven “Carpe Diem”
    Mastodon “Divinations”
    Saviours “Crucifire”
    Krisiun “Combustion Inferno”
    Watain “Black Salvation”

  • Shitknuckle

“Bringer of Storms” by Hate Eternal
“The Disease” by Heaven Shall Burn

These songs not only made me wanna speed, they also made me wanna drive my truck head first into a concrete wall.

  • brandonmetal

    KALMAH

  • Sin and Death

    All of those songs suck.

  • S. Gonzales

“Reign In Blood” once netted me a 98 in a 65 zone. “Altar Of Sacrifice” was the song actually playing when I got tagged. Almost had to go to traffic school for that one.

  • Heavy Metal

    anything by Sunn O)))

  • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/62449cbe5ea8d22bcc2e76890fceaa37.png Lord Bling

My vote for recent ‘speeding ticket’ classic: Meshuggah — ‘Combustion’.

  • SourDeez

Breaking the Law, because if you do get pulled over you get a great moment of irony when you roll down your window.

  • paganheart

My top 10 leadfoot songs, (in no particular order):

    “Livewire” by Motley Crue
    “Shake Me” by Cinderella
“Set To Fail” by Lamb Of God
    “Redneck” by Lamb Of God
“This Is Absolution” by Killswitch Engage
    “Great Dividers” by Unearth
    “Fucking Hostile” by Pantera
    “Walk” by Pantera
    “Sharpen The Blades” by Daath
    “Suffer Not One” by Freya

Note To Self: Burn these to CD for the next road trip…

  • http://vague-news.blogspot.com Clarky Cat

I’m listening to Dave Grohl’s Probot in the car at the moment and I’m driving noticably faster. Red War is a stand-out moment.
