SPLITTING ATOMS WITH LIZARD PROFESSOR

lizard professorWhat exactly would a Lizard Professor be? A lizard who happens to be a professor, or a professor specializing in the study of lizards?

One day I’d like to know, but for now I’m just content to be listening to the Texas-based band Lizard Professor‘s new single “Offthewallogy.” Though the bio on their MySpace page has the usual tripe about sticking out in a scene where conformity is the norm and blah blah don’t they know every fucking band says this? — it just so happens that this band is actually quite interesting and original. They’re proggy in a way that’s neither too heady nor too masturbatory. I’d liken them most to Between the Buried and Me, but where BTBAM always seem to defeault into Dream Theater-inspired jam outs, Lizard Professor veer towards dissonance-filled jazz segues. The older material posted on their MySpace page is less interesting than the new track, but I feel like they’re really onto something with “Offthewallogy” and look forward to hearing more in the [hopefully] near future.

This sounds actually really cool. They’ve played with some really shit bands, though.

I think they may have got their name from that old Spiderman villain from back in the diz-ay. I had to look it up, but the villain’s name is “Lizard,” here’s what it says:

“When he lost his arm during a war, Dr. Curt Connors felt like he lost a half of himself. Obsessed with regaining his lost limb, Connors creates a serum from reptilian DNA, in hopes of gaining reptile-like regeneration abilities. He regains his arm, but at a price: he becomes a humanoid lizard, with a savage personality.” (Wikipedia)

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

They actually got their name when they were high one day and one of the members drew a lizard in a white coat. They elaborated on the idea, and when the time came to choose a band name, they thought, “What the hell! Lizard Professor!”
