RIVAL SCHOOLS ARE RIVALS ONCE AGAIN

Monday, March 8th, 2010 at 11:30am by

Recently reunited post-hardcore vets Rival Schools have a new album on the way via Photo Finish Records, report our metal cohorts at SMNnews.com. The dudes in Rival Schools are hardcore and post-hardcore royalty: Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Walking Concert), Sammy Siegler (Youth of Today, Judge, CIV), Ian Love (Burn, Cardia), and Cache Tolman (Iceburn, Institute).

When I saw Rival Schools at CMJ in 2008 they seemed a bit rusty, but that doesn’t deter my excitement for a new album. Here’s “Used for Glue” from their one and only album, 2001′s United by Fate. I’m guessing that a good portion of our readership is too young to know/appreciate the importance of this band and their members, but now’s as good a time to learn as any.

    Love this band. Good call

+ 1. United by fate is awesome, “undercovers on” still gives me shivers.

  • Tortiss

    the hell is this?

  • Genial Gentile

Embarrassing video….great song. Walter could crap in a grocery bag and I would buy it.

  • Seanicus

They recorded a second record but it was never released. It’s out there on the interwebs. It’s pretty good.

    • stu1

It’s been rumored that it’s coming out at some point. Same with the missing Quicksand record.

  • Elise

    LOVE Rival Schools. Walter rules.

  • jordaniac89

is this the kind of bull shit you guys put on MetalSucks now? I mean goddamn…

    • stu1

Yeah. Sucks when dudes post about good music.

It’s actually a welcome change in the form of a shit song from the usual Periphery dick suck festival that this site usually is. “MetalSucks…. so we spend all our energy on pretentious wanks instead.”

  • ferocious_fetus

I remember watching this on MTVX. Anyone remember that?
Love this record, can’t wait for more.

  • stu1

    Ian was in Burn?

  • brian roach

Bummer that the Quicksand guys can’t get it togehter to reunite. Rival Schools is decent, but they are no Quicksand!

    • stu1

Walter has pretty much said it’s his least favorite project, unfortunately. Plus Sergio is now a Deftone.

  • gauche

i saw them election night in Hoboken and they were great. played some new songs that sounded rad and i am stoked for the new album.

  • KC

Can’t wait for new Rival Schools album. I was just listening to United By Fate the other day thinking about how many popular bands owe their success to Rival Schools.

  • wk

yipeee!!! such a great underrated band. sparta too.

  • Noyokono

I’m starting a Klezmer tribute to this band called Rival Shules.

  • Eddie

This is good news! If you are not familiar with this band or the members of this band. Those guys have all influenced metal in so many ways it is hard to keep track. So does this mean Jawbox can finally release a new album? I was in a stoner/doom band and listened to these post hardcore bands so much, they had an influence on me, even in a heavy metal band.

Good stuff. While we’re checking on past glories, I would recommend Handsome and Far. Very similar to this band. Not surprising since Far’s Jonah Matranga was involved in their debut EP.

    • Genial Gentile

      Handsome’s s/t was great.

    • josh

Far were awesome. I saw Rival Schools last year in Brisbane as part of the Soundwave festival and they were pretty disappointing. Walter’s vocals were terrible. I was really looking forward to seeing them live and they were a bit of a let down as I really dig United By Fate.

      • stu1

They’ve never been a very good live band.

    • KC

Far actually have a new album coming out soon on Vagrant records. It drops sometime in May I believe.

  • xvanillagorillax

Good to see Rival Schools getting some love on a metal website.

  • Baldish

Sounds like something that would play on the radio along side nickleback. And yes, I’m serious.

    • stu1

And yes, you’re deaf or an idiot.

      • Tesla’s Radio Controlled Dog

People are entitled to an opinion you fucking troll.

  • Sandy Duncan’s Glass Eye

The best thing about Walter is that he convinced Porcell from Youth of Today to smoke weed with him when they went to see The Smiths. I remember reading this in the old Anti matter zine and it still makes me chuckle.

    When’s the Into Another reunion?

    • stu1

One of the dudes died, right? And Richie does Underdog.

the only Rival Schools I like is the old badass Playstation figher game they probably got their name from. I still have that game too, it’s fun as fuck.
