DO QUICKSAND RIVAL RIVAL SCHOOLS?

The reactions to yesterday’s post about the Rival Schools reunion record were much to my surprise mostly positive, which I guess could just indicate that those who didn’t know the band chose to skip over the post. But I’m guessing that even more of you were/are fans of Quicksand, Walter Schreifels’ main post-Gorilla Biscuits squeeze. I discovered Quicksand after their time in the sun had come and gone, but I still find myself wishing for a reunion. As cool as the new Rival Schools record could be, I think a new Quicksand record would smoke it.

Here’s the video for “Dine Alone” from 1993′s Slip. The video is so… ’90s. I love it.

Quicksand’s “Manic Compression” was one of my most listened to albums in my younger years… Right next to Helmet’s “Betty” ….. I recall watching Empire Records when I was young and hearing Thorn in my Side during a part in the movie and being absolutely stoked…. But then I realized how terrible that movie was.

Haha! Yeah, I hate the fact that so much good music was used in that POS movie. Quicksand is great. One of the first REAL alternative bands I ever got into.

Quicksand was always Walter’s best, in my opinion. They had way more PUNCH.

  • Phil

Lucky enough to see Quicksand headline the first Warped Tour. They played an awesome set. Seems like I read they reunited for some tour dates with the Deftones in the late 90s/early 00s. At that time, they tried to start a new album. Sadly, it all fell apart again and another reunion seems unlikely.

They broke up in late 95, I think. Then reunited in like 98 and did that Deftones’ tour and that was that.

That was an awesome show, with Snapcase, Quicksand, and the Deftones. I’m so glad I had a chance to see them before they broke up for good.

        • stu1

I thought Snapcase were the openers. Wasn’t sure though. That is a pretty great show.

I fell in love with Quicksand by accident – i caught them, Orange 9mm and Sick Of It All back in the early 90s. An outstanding show… I’ve got a lot of love for Rival Schools (and saw them open for Eagles of Death Metal a few months ago), but my heart belongs to Quicksand.

      Now that’s a fucking line up…I’m jealous.

    • stu1

Saw that show in 95. So fucking good.

    • Pat

I saw that same show at Tuxedo Junction in Danbury, CT

Yeah, Pat, Tuxedo in Danbury – that was the one I was at… Killer show!

Quicksand were, still are and always will be amazing.

i really tried with rival schools, but it just sounded so much like it was following the trends of the early 00′s as opposed to what quicksand was doing in the 90′s. it has it’s moments, but it sounds way too overproduced and lacking the punch that elise mentioned. i can still put on slip to this day and it sounds timeless…

Quicksand rules. Suprised they haven’t been mentioned on here before since Sergio Vega replaced Chi Cheng

Quicksand is definitely superior to Rival Schools… so far.. I don’t see Rival Schools tapping into the aggression that Quicksand channeled which is what makes them so amazing. Quicksand is a perfect example of a band that broke up before it had a chance to fuck up their legacy.. not that they would have.. but they never got the chance.. left us with a few amazing albums and some sick tours.

Rivals Schools only had the one decent song in comparison to Quicksands whole catalogue of awesome. Even Walter’s vocal style change in RS was a step down. I’m all for Quicksand.

  • nick

quicksand were awesome, I grew up listening to them and I got to see them twice live, they are far better than Rival Schools.

  • xvanillagorillax

Quicksand were amazing and as much as I love Rival Schools, I gotta say that Quicksand was Walter’s finest hour. Has anyone here heard the Walter Sings The Hits cd? It’s Walter singing the Gorilla Biscuits “Start Today” album. It’s….interesting.

  • Baldish

This is better than rival schools but then again almost anything is. This is actually interesting

  • fightingmike

I like Quicksand alot better than Rival Schools too. I say that if Rival Schools is back together than Handsome, Tom Capone’s(Quicksand guitarist) other awesome 90′s band should get back together and they should do a tour together.

  • bucketochicken

    The 90s were awesome.

  • Fazer

Quicksand FTW. Rival Schools always seemed weak by comparison.
